Just when we started wondering whether the company can pull off the eye-tracking tech supposedly in store for the rumored Samsung i9300 M Olympics phone, and it clarified how they do it...

cool but sounds like a gimmick..

5. SleepingOz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 07:44 12 6

unless it was developed by Sony or HTC, right?

12. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:23 5 7

what does Sony and HTC have to do with this? They weren't even mentioned in the article. What a douche troll.

17. SleepingOz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:39 4 4

Just don't take your case for a generality! You are the douche troll here!
I'm neither bashing Sony nor HTC in my previous comment. Does a stupid fag like you even know the real meaning of trolling?
Oh yeah, that's what you do on every Samsung Article!

18. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:45 3 4

Well, everyone is entitled for their own opinion. So if you agree or disagree with mine then I got no problem with that. We can just dance with intelligent arguements and not just come out with stupid statements like yours.

And Ok, so what's the sense of mentioning Sony and HTC? I'm not getting it. I don't know if its me or its just you being a stupid douche troll.

And yeah and you're the perfect example of a troll no doubt.

21. SleepingOz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:53 3 4

Who are you fooling? Everyone here knows that you're one of the biggest Samsung haters, if not the biggest Samsung hater of this site. You never miss an opportunity to troll on Samsung articles. And you're calling me a troll? Again, just don't take your case for a generality!

25. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:13 2 3

I don't hate Samsung, I just don't like them. They make great products but their designs just doesnt fit my taste and thats just it.

I don't bash or troll the way you do. My post and the article doesnt include Sony and HTC and your talking stupid already. lol

And yes thanks for avoiding the BIG question,

"what's the sense of mentioning Sony and HTC?" lol

26. SleepingOz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:25 3 3

Have I ever bashed HTC or Sony in my previous comments unlike you with Samsung? You've got no point calling me a troll!
I just mentioned Sony or HTC to accentuate the fact that you're a Samsung hater! You would have never found this a gimmick if this was from one of these manufacturers. Don't lie to yourself, troll!

27. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:28 2 4

You admit. OK. So the next big question is,

"Who's the troll now?" lol

And my first statement wasnt even about bashing Samsung or its innovation, I'm talking about the feature itself in general. And the problem is you're so defensive, the word "TROLL" is written all over your face. lol

28. SleepingOz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:33 3 3

judging by the rating of your comments, it's you.. =] ahahaha

29. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:38 2 5

Being thumbed down by a horde of Samsung fanboys won't make me a troll. If you think out of the box, it will be you, no doubt.

30. Oxygen posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:55 4 4

From what I have read so far, you are the troll.

32. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 10:02 2 5

I'm so amazed how Samsung fanboys share some sort of a link in their minds that everytime someone disagrees or atleast bash one of their co-fanboys, they will automatically jump to the ship and call the opposing party a troll without giving a intelligent reasoning as to why he became a troll. funny right?

34. SleepingOz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 10:22 4 3

If you weren't trolling then why are you so defensive?
You keep editing your comments again and again to sound the least "troll" possible but you just can't help it, the word "TROLL" is written all over your face. hahaha!

35. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 10:30 4 3

Come on man, I just wanna end this stupid argument with you. For all I care, you're the true troll because you are mentioning Sony and HTC out of nowhere for being so defensive about Samsung. End of story.

37. SleepingOz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 10:39 4 4

Anyone neutral can clearly see that you're the only troll here. Even you! But yeah, keep lying to yourself!

36. Oxygen posted on 29 Mar 2012, 10:33 5 3

I'm far from being a samsung fanboy, the ONLY product i own from samsung, is the galaxy note, I also use a xperia s, my laptop is a macbook pro and I'm planning to buy the asus prime as my first tablet. Even my fridge is a sharp but you, you appear to be a real samsung hater.

6. buggerrer posted on 29 Mar 2012, 07:47 4 2

do u know what gimmick means? how is this a gimmick? lol

11. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:22 4 6

To me, gimmick means having a selling or a cool feature that is actually useless. And this is the best example.

I really doubt a lot of people will use this security feature, its more like a play or fun feature to me.

13. taz89 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:29 3

i agree it was a gimmick but the fact is that this gimmick got plenty of my friends asking me does your phone have face unlock also it is much less of a gimmick and is much more useful as a security feature now that samsung has pretty much made it almost 100% secure from the fact that no matter how many pictures someone tries to use, pictures cannot blink.

15. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:35 1 3

Your friends are asking for it not because its a useful feature but more like a really cool feature.

It's easier and more convenient to just enter pins and passwords than wait for the phone to scan your face. Sometimes, depending on lighting conditions, it won't respond or atleast recognize your face. I can foresee issues with this. A feature that has a future but not to be trusted at the moment.

14. ilia1986 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:32 6 1

Useless? How on earth is a method of securing your phone against unwanted usage by others which doesn't require you to remember a password or a pattern, and is pretty much unhackable - useless?

16. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:38 3 7

If you think that it's unhackable then you're a fool.

Samsung is innovative no doubt, but Samsung fans always think that Samsung innovations like this is like "A giant step for mankind". lol

20. frydaexiii posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:49 6 1

It's not a great step for mankind, but it's better than what the other companies are claiming as innovation. Compared to Apple's "revolutionary" Siri, which was just something Apple bought off the App store and hyped it up, which do you think is more innovative here?

22. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:57 3 4

I don't give a damn about Apple so I don't wanna talk about that.

And I'm not talking about who's more innovative or what not, I don't talk like that. I'm just saying that Samsung did a great job but its useless for now.

7. frydaexiii posted on 29 Mar 2012, 07:56 6 1

Originally, the face unlock was made as a quick unlock system for drivers and a security measure against thieves (What are the odds a thief has a picture of you?). But now thanks to Sammy, it is even more secure such that even your friends who want to sneakily use your phone, won't be able to unlock it. Samsung just made this a legit unlock system, no longer just a gimmick.

19. SleepingOz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:45 4 4

He sure does know all that but he just can't help trolling on every Samsung articles.

23. arcq12 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:06 2 3

see who trolls now? give me a link on those "trolling around on EVERY samsung articles".

it doesnt mean that i dont agree on a specific article also means that im trolling already. grow up son.

43. TOYMAN posted on 29 Mar 2012, 14:01

yes its great idea until some one has a vid of you lol

31. rendHELL posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:59 2

HTC maniac!! :D
hehehe...

Gimmick or not... well lets just see what happens eh?

2. Zayuh24 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 07:27 7

VERY good idea. I was beginning to worry about the face unlock feature dying before it was widely implemented because of that whole security issue. Good job, Sammy.

3. akita256 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 07:31 1

HA! I think we can all predict what will happen next: Somebody will try taking a photo, cutting around the eyes and having a way to manually slide the eyes closed quickly to see if they can fool Samsung's new security technology. Or they'll try taking a close-up video of that person blinking their eyes with one phone and then try holding up that phone to the Samsung phone and playing the video to see if they can fool Samsung's security. Have no doubt that somebody will try it!! :)

10. ivanko34 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:19 1

nobody will try to do that
too complicated
Samsung found a very nice security system

39. protozeloz posted on 29 Mar 2012, 11:59 1

or even better killing the person and mounting the face into a machine that makes it blink, I´m 100% sure spies with sensible data on their android devices will not use face unlock

4. frydaexiii posted on 29 Mar 2012, 07:36

Wow, that's actually pretty smart!

8. troutsy posted on 29 Mar 2012, 07:58

That's pretty clever, good for Samsung. In my experience though, I've always felt compelled to turn off face unlock features because they seem to be such a drag on resources. I could always enter my password about as quickly as it could recognize my face and I REALLY don't want the thing scanning my face while i'm using the phone just to keep the screen lit.

-1 for the article... It was pretty distracting how poorly written it is.

9. nnaatthhaannx2 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 08:08 3

this is PA, of course the articles aren't written to perfection

24. samfrancisco posted on 29 Mar 2012, 09:08 4

Every security has a hole, but this one is an easy workaround to almost cover a big hole. Great job Samsung. :-)

33. sheepygalaxy posted on 29 Mar 2012, 10:19

Half the stuff on phones are gimmicks and that's the same for all apps stores but we all still use and download them

38. gwuhua1984 posted on 29 Mar 2012, 10:44

This feature is definitely an upgrade to the face unlock. It'll be very fun to play around with once it is out.

40. jibraihimi posted on 29 Mar 2012, 12:43 2

Now Apple will innovate and will have 'lick to unlock' and 'fart to unlock' feature in next iteration of ios........... :)

41. LoneShaolin posted on 29 Mar 2012, 13:04

Sweet. Will this make it into the Skyrocket ICS update?

42. pooked posted on 29 Mar 2012, 13:15

It is indeed a neat trick.

44. fraydoe posted on 29 Mar 2012, 16:01

seems that maybe you just need to cover the eyes briefly so the camera loses sight of your iris or pupil. not too hard to bypass with a picture and some scissors =)

45. SensibleVision posted on 03 Apr 2012, 16:30

Great article and comments.

The Samsung addition of blink detection to the face unlock feature in Android ICM is an interesting way to address a common challenge of that feature – photo rejection.

Sensible Vision – (my employer and) the leading provider of face recognition solutions for the PC – has taken a different approach. By simultaneously touching a “secret shape” in addition to showing your face, FastAccess Anywhere for Android and iOS achieves:

• Security greater than that of a highly complex password—without the need to actually type a password on a small keyboard
• Extremely quick access to protected data. This is critical to the long term use of any technology. We avoid the use of time-based techniques like video capture that introduce additional delays into the login process.
• Complete immunity to access by both photos and videos (photos can’t blink, but videos certainly can).

FastAccess Anywhere also provides convenience by allowing the user to target security to only where it’s really needed – the login to secure apps and websites and the launch of apps that the user deems to be sensitive. No need to go through security just to check the weather or play a game.

Thanks,
Kim
