Samsung's 2010 document says Galaxy S would be better if it were more like the Apple iPhone
0. phoneArena 07 Aug 2012, 23:38 posted on
Apple has placed a 2010 document from Samsung into evidence, all 132 pages of it; the document is translated from Korean and compares the Samsung Galaxy S with the Apple iPhone as engineers write that the Galaxy S needs to be more like the iPhone...

Oops more proof Samsung copied. They're looking really bad from this trial. We have Samsung CEO admitting they should be more like Apple, side by side pics, documents, expert witnesses. Buried by evidence.
Apple has this in the bag.

hmm... i am really going to be truthful about this, but Samsung really copied Apple....
but that doesn't mean it should be banned. Samsung's really trying to get off that trail with the Nature UX and all that.
just pay the royalties and get over with it --- and change Samsung's style. really. they should also lessen the use of plastic. Samsung has a lot of flaws to sorten out.

no they didnt copy apple and if they did copy apple they need tp pay the same people apple pay and their name is nokia. real simple

So Samsung's shot themselves in the foot during this trial what, 12, 13 times now? It'll be amazing if they come out of this thing walking...

i have to say this, i have to say this,
samsung took some hints on how to beautify or should i say improve their products on what the public is asking them. They took some hints from apple because it successfully got the public's heart with its products.
"Copy" is a strong word to use. Didn't apple took some hints with its design from other existing phones back then? Yes it did. Because that's how the market works. Just create something that people are asking for. "Copy" is a strong word to use. Didn't apple took some hints with its design from other existing phones back then? Yes it did. Because that's how the market works. Just create something that people are asking for. Back then, iPhone doesn't have notification tray and multitasking, but what happened?
My point here is that, sometimes you have to base your products on what consumers like. Samsung didn't copy, they took some hints. At least, IMO.

I would agree with you all the way if this document had never been brought to light. If Samsung had taken a few obvious cues from Apple on larger issues like icon design and animations, it wouldn't look too bad because, again, those changes would be obvious.
However, Samsung compiled a list of hundreds of even the most minute issues. "120" in Section I, for instance, refers to the sound that their respective Alarm applications make when setting the time. It's tiny things like these that, in my opinion, casts doubt on Samsung's innocence.
44. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
This is what I've been trying to say. Any one of these things by themselves wouldn't be copying, but when you put it all together it is.
We have this document, copied icons, copied accessories, copied design of the phone, comes in black and white like iPhone, copied Apple stores, and the latest is S-Voice.
You take all these things and IT IS blatant copying. The type Apple can't ignore.
46. Commentator (Posts: 3669; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
I'm surprised Apple's been so quiet as far as S-Voice is concerned. Of all the things Samsung's been accused of copying, the most obvious is their take on Siri. The interface is overwhelmingly similar, and it doesn't even have to be (I'm not a fan of the Siri interface anyways).
49. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Yes there was no reason at all to copy the interface and I agree there's nothing particularly amazing about Siri's interface so Samsung is copying just to copy. It's also somewhat shocking that Samsung would so blatantly continue to copy considering the trial they're facing.
Also I'm starting to see a turn of the tide as I've gotten more thumbs up here then I have in a long time. I'm also seeing posters really starting to show dissappointment and change their opinion on Samsung.
56. wendygarett (unregistered)
Giving you the thumb up doesnt mean we support your fanboyism... We also hope Samsung to redesign his ui because android nowadays is not android used to be... And if Samsung still don't change and remain like a gingerbread phone... I salute him... And Apple should invest more on ios instead of suing people around like a crying baby...
Here's a last thumb up for you... Argh...
84. notor (unregistered)
When someone will copy your work, then I will ask you the same question that why are you cribbing?
62. Commentator (Posts: 3669; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
I was seriously considering thumbing you down, to punish you for your hubris! ...but I'm just not that cold-hearted... a thumbs-up for you sir, but be warned: the art of thumb-reading is not to be taken lightly. Many a vainglorious, foolish man has been felled by his own ego, taken ultimately by the down-votes cast by those he once called his bosom-friends. Therefore take heed, none but the Thumb-Gods can foresee what the thumb-winds of fortune will bring you, and thus 'tis best to never mind the issue in the first place...

This was over 2 years ago. If you look at all the Galaxy devices with TouchWiz 4.0 and above, they look nothing like iOS. The Galaxy S2's success made them realise they don't need to copy Apple anymore. Surely even you Taco can agree that TouchWiz 4.0 and after are nothing like iOS
105. JunitoNH (Posts: 1647; Member since: 15 Feb 2012)
Listen, the Japanese and Koreans have been (doing) copying Americans cars for years; to the point were they master the craft now. Is no different, Asians see something, they copy, and then perfect it.
94. jp26sx (Posts: 14; Member since: 07 Mar 2012)
I think S-voice was build from technology partnerships that existed before siri so apple can't go after them for that.
97. dok2005 (Posts: 55; Member since: 18 Apr 2012)
android phones had voice capabilities before iphone. To be more closer to your point and case. S-Voice was made with the partnership with Vlingo. Which you can see on ever samsung phone how it evolved.
76. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
i thumb you up but hints are different from what samsung is doing... the galaxy series really looks a lot an iDevice!!! they made some modification but it still look an iPhone/iPod!
43. Ubi2447 (Posts: 131; Member since: 14 Feb 2012)
As much as I hate to agree, it is looking like Apple has a lot going for it in this triel. It certainly didn't help that the judge ruled that Samsung wasn't able to use evidence that would help them.
48. Packer29 (Posts: 56; Member since: 10 Sep 2011)
Why don't you apply to work for Apple sense your obviously so passionate about Apple instead of wasting time being repetitive!
57. dok2005 (Posts: 55; Member since: 18 Apr 2012)
actually if you saying that samsung copied then u really not understanding. yes that what apple want you to believe but lets take this chance to really understand. Being thats all this is true the than the original galaxy s and other verison for the different carriers shouldn't be under fire because it didnt copy the feel or working of the ios. the only thing thats noted here is that galaxy s ui looks like apple. Trust me when i say if that the case nothing wrong because smartphones lcons looked like that for a very long time. then they do just like everybody else does in this business and that is trying to make something better than what the people called the best. even apple does this when they finally added a voice function real picture messaging semi tasking and the drop down notification bar. all samsung did here was take notes on what they need to improve and then impro
59. dok2005 (Posts: 55; Member since: 18 Apr 2012)
improved on them. nothing more nothing less. i know everybody in this world can look at these two devices and tell the differences on look alone if you cant you no smarter than my 3 year old child who knows the difference.
63. IamYourFather6657 (Posts: 321; Member since: 01 Jul 2012)
Samsung is just trying to say that how good the iPhone is compared with the galaxy s
But that does not mean Samsung never copied the iPhone
65. SonyFTW2020 (Posts: 311; Member since: 03 May 2012)
taco i would thumbs you up for dedication to the wrong side.....but it is once again .........the wrong side.................and just cuase things appear to be what you think they are does not mean its the "truth" it may have some facts in the there but until the entire story unfolds it remains nothing at all.......
69. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
At this point with all this overwhelming evidence you have to have some serious blinders on to not see what samsung is doing.
110. willard12 (Posts: 1549; Member since: 04 Jul 2012)
You have 2 sides competing, Samsung wanted to make a device better than the iPhone and looked at all aspects of the iPhone to make its product better. All apple is presenting are reasons they think the Galaxy S should be banned. If apple wants to ban the Galaxy S, I think Samsung can live with that.
67. TheRetroReplay (Posts: 254; Member since: 20 Mar 2012)
I'll admit that the first Galaxy S phones where very iPhone like in look and feel because of the TouchWiz UI. But, now we're on the Galaxy S3 which is nothing like the iPhone, in fact it's more like an HTC Android device.
Because Apple keeps bringing up Samsung's older products, I think they're only going to get monetary compensation for those. I don't think that they'll be awarded an injunction on Samsung's newer products.
83. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Of course they copied, you dimwit.
It's the way product development works - evaluating the competitors and implementing good things they come up with.
Apple's case here is that Samsung directly harmed Apple by making customers buy their products because of their iPhone-ish look and behaviour.
This is simply NOT the case because every next iPhone release smashed previous sales records.
Demand for iPhones increased multiple times since the release of the S1.
The likely verdict will be that Samsung copied, but Apple doesn't have a base for damages.
87. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
..I wanted to say, everybody is doing it yet Apple is the only one whining about it.
Again, it's not whether Samsung copied it, but how much it has to do with their success.
People weren't buying galaxy s because it looks and feels like the iPhone.
Touch wiz and design of the phone were never praised as advantages compared to other android competition.
Galaxy came on top because of its superior specs, and performance.
95. doublehammer (Posts: 75; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
thats what you get for reading these little blurbs instead of actually reading transcripts of whats happening in court. These PA articles make it look like its a slam dunk case. The transcripts show Samsung's lawyers eating Apple's over paid witnesses for breakfast. The 2 big witnesses have both been shredded by Samsung's defense so far and have looked very weak by the end of disposition.
If Apple cant do the same to Samsung's "experts", then the case is very strongly in Samsung's favor.
113. InspectorGadget80 (unregistered)
Apple copy SONY's PROTOTYPE to get the design and also pays the EXPERT WITNESS 75,000$ to take the stand.
114. InspectorGadget80 (unregistered)
Do you ALSO realize that APPLE COPIED SONY prototype to get the idea for their iPhone? No guess not. and also they PAY THE KEY WITNESS 75,000$.

thumbs me down samsung people but the truth will prevail!
SAMSUNG COPIED IPHONE!!!!!!
im not even that huge fan of apple products.. i just feel elite around iDevices.. while on samsung, i feel so cheap(no offense but the only asian tech product i like the most is asus.. i like samsung's appliance not phones!)
11. SonyFTW2020 (Posts: 311; Member since: 03 May 2012)
"thumbs me down samsung people but the truth will prevail!"
indeed it will LOL...but truth and facts are two separate things unfortunately
14. Savage (unregistered)
Will you let it rest with that 'iPhones make me feel elite' thingy? You don't buy a smartphone for using it as a status symbol.
And your comment's first part is true.
29. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
but for me... an apple product is a status symbol... sorry! :)
74. phitch (Posts: 214; Member since: 06 Mar 2012)
You know what my status symbol is? My house. So enjoy the 1 bedroom apartment with your iPhone.
81. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
uhm no... my house is pretty big.. but will a lot of people if your traveling will see it? no...
it is a symbol when you go, like to a coffee shop (you must be kidding me is you go to starbucks and your phone is a dumbphone) and any other places...
96. doublehammer (Posts: 75; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
if your worried about what strangers think of you by what phone you use, your a moron. NO ONE CARES. Its not 2007/08.. or even 09. its 2012. The markets reflect the fact that apples reign as a "status symbol" are long over in all except emerging markets like china and super poor countries.
5. Aeires (unregistered)
Apple just doesn't know how to take a compliment.
/s, in case you missed it.
Yawn, yet another document that can be interpreted any number of ways. Anyone else wish this trial would end?
13. ghostnexus (Posts: 96; Member since: 07 Mar 2012)
yes move on, and make an iPhone different from the iPhone 4
7. onilink67 (Posts: 8; Member since: 18 Jun 2012)
One good thing is the directive to remove the iphone feeling. Actually shows that while they are comparing too phones (giving icons a 3D feel is nothing new) the engineers were told to make sure not to give the impression of an iphone look ... not to mention this is just the dock open against iphones homescreen (yes I know iphone doesn't have a dock).
This trial is going to come down to how patent law is upheld and may be a trail to be referenced for years. Its all about what is considered a valid patent considering previous patents and what someone can really patent (rectangle). I'll admit I get sick reading a lot of these articles seeing these companies fight like this but I think both companies need it right now to kinda put things into perspective.
8. ilkinandr92 (Posts: 46; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
Umm this actually shows Samsung didnt copy GS 1 because its worse then apples iphone xD which makes apples argument invalid because they said GS1 was like iphone. which would mean iphone sucked too. I like samsung phones and apple but im on Samsung side on this one. All the manufactures make candy bar phones and apple cant sue them all if u look at LG phones they look even more like an iphone by design. So its same as saying u cant make wheels round on Mercedes because BMW had it first rofl. Another thing is why didnt apple sue samsung when the GS1 was first released but only now? Well if u look at the market share chat that was provided in the court when GS1 and GS2 came out their value wasnt high but when GS3 hit the market their stocks shoot through the roof an now apple is losing money so they do what they do the best (Bitch and cry lol)
27. ghostnexus (Posts: 96; Member since: 07 Mar 2012)
Well I hope if this doesn't slow down Samsung, I got my first Samsung Android phone last week(Epic 4g Touch), and honestly I found it to be better than the One X(at&t), Droid Razr, and the Lumia 900, I am planing on buying the galaxy s4 next year.
66. IamYourFather6657 (Posts: 321; Member since: 01 Jul 2012)
Better than the OneX ? You must be a Samsung fanboy . How can I device made last year better that this year's HTC flagship
Snapdragon s4 vs eynos , hd screen vs wvga , better design , newest version of sense vs old touchwiz
38. Commentator (Posts: 3669; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
While it may suggest that Samsung didn't copy the iPhone with the GSI, it furthers Apple's claim that they did copy it with the GSII. Many of the suggestions listed in the file were taken to heart when designing the GSII. Remember, Every Samsung phone up to the GSIII is under the microscope here
Also, Apple isn't losing money, I don't know where you got that information.
75. phitch (Posts: 214; Member since: 06 Mar 2012)
Actually, it doesn't further any claim, it lets the engineers see where they could improve. Read the damn document, they were even told to avoid making it feel like the iPhone.
9. Savage (unregistered)
It's difficult to comment here without taking sides. Okay Samsung, Apple's right, you shouldn't have copied them. And Apple, You should've sued them back in 2010. Not when their smartphone sales are greater than yours. It makes you look desperate which is what you are!
20. Savage (unregistered)
Why, thank you random citizen :D
51. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
How is Apple desperate when they just raked in 77% of profits in the mobile industry?
54. Savage (unregistered)
Then why don't you tell me why is Apple trying to get Samsung devices banned? They'd have made plenty of money by just asking Sammy to pay royalties. Instead, they wanna control the USA smartphone market, banning devices that threaten its sales.
55. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
It's fine that you disagree with Apple's strategy, however you're being dishonest to call then desperate.
Desperate would be RIM for example. Apple is at the top of the hill.
And why aren't you upset with Samsung for so blatantly copying?
