Samsung wins awards from the MWC as Manufacturer of the year and for Smartphone of the year

0. phoneArena posted on 28 Feb 2012, 19:24

While Samsung itself admitted yesterday that it isn't doing too well with its tablets, the company's remarkably successful Samsung Galaxy S II was named "Smartphone of the year" and Samsung was "Manufacturer of the year" at the annual MWC Awards...

20million SGSII owners are awaiting the almighty 2nd coming which will be the SGS III :)

Would make more sense to award the company for its achievements for the previous year rather than the coming year...

Well deserved!

Can't disagree, Sammy put out the best phone last year so they should get the best manufacturer, BUT the SGS2 was not the smartphone of the year. Galaxy Nexus was.

7. WWThinker posted on 28 Feb 2012, 20:13 4 1

Other than having the honour of being the first ICS loaded smartphone and probably the first 4.7" phone with 1280x800 AMOLED and multi-mode modems; Nexus is ugly as hell, has a very pitty 5MP camera, has a less than average or desirable battery life, and no support for external microSD. SGSG2 offers much better value of money overall (i.e. cheaper, lighter, prettier, better camera, microSD support).

17. Cwebb posted on 28 Feb 2012, 22:05 3 5

Can't judge a book by its cover, can't judge a camera-phone by its MPs. Design is very opinion based, and I think the Nexus's buttonless front makes it look much better than the SGS2. I can't test the battery life because I don't have it. You have a point with microSD though. But the pure Google/1st updates makes it better

18. ph00ny posted on 28 Feb 2012, 22:15 1

Of course not but the quality of the camera between the nexus and SGS2 is quite far apart. As for battery life, i'm currently using the GSM note and LTE Nexus and the battery life difference between the two were night and day different. I can barely get through the work day with the Nexus and I can get through the entire day with the Note and then some

24. WWThinker posted on 29 Feb 2012, 02:09 1

I didn't judge the look of Nexus by its "cover". The curve of the case plus the big overhang at the top and the bottom of the curve, and the big rounding at the 4 corners, ... All these combined simply make Nexus look ug.., at least not as clean and pleasing as SGS2. I have Nikon F2As, F4E, F5, D1x, D2x, Kodak Pro14n, hence I do not judge still image quality by the amount of mega pixels of the sensor. Of all the published comparison, I haven't seen anyone giving top marks to the 5MP camera of Nexus. In all these published comparison, Nokia N8 & SGS2 & iPhone4s are the top 3. Please correct me if you know otherwise.

8. Dr.Phil posted on 28 Feb 2012, 20:20 1 1

Eh, yeah but the Nexus wasn't really released until later on in the year and it wasn't as widely sold as the GSII. And the GSII brought us the fastest dual-core processor (well until the S4 comes out) that is on the market. And it was one of the most competing phones that Samsung has produced. I mean look what came out of it: patent wars. Why? Because Apple finally had some real competition. I'm not saying Apple didn't have any Android competition before, but the GSII really appealed to a lot of consumers and therefore it was the target for Apple.

15. Cwebb posted on 28 Feb 2012, 21:55 1

Your 1st 2 points contradict themselves, if its released later in the year, in most cases, it won't sell as well. And yes, Apple patented the hell out of it, but they're doing that with everyone. Apple sueing people shouldn't be the way to judge if a phone is the best. And its the best Samsung phone, because the only other highest end phone was the SGS1.

13. bucky posted on 28 Feb 2012, 21:12 2 2

Luls, the nexus was the second most overrated phone of tge year. In my opinion, it failed with a crappy cpu/gpu, no sd, absolutely terriblr camera, pentile screen, phone reception, timing of releasd, lack of support from verizon especially withthe cancellation of support for the cdma model....on and on and on.

There is actually nothing people can really say about the sgs2 in general that sucks about it.

16. Cwebb posted on 28 Feb 2012, 22:01 2

CPU/GPU did what it was suppose to. It wasn't trying to be the best, they just wanted something to go with their top of the line screen. Camera is always debatable, and just because its 5 MP doesn't always mean its crap. And the release date was all because of Verizon, don't give me that s***.
And the problem that makes the Nexus 10x better than SGS2? THE RESOLUTION! How can a phone with a resolution of 480x800 be the BEST smartphone when there are phones with 720p! My Evo 3D had a better resolution!

25. Dark4o90 posted on 29 Feb 2012, 02:15 1

480 x 800 looks nice enough and S2 looks and it's better than your evo 3d, and nexus till S3 comes out

26. WWThinker posted on 29 Feb 2012, 02:21

@ Cwebb. You could have missed the fine prints. SGS2 has many variants: one variant shipped in Asia offers resolution higher than 480x800. Given the pen-tile arrangement on Nexus, it is hard to say conclusively that the screen looks better than that of SGS2. In short, there could always be one variant of SGS2 to fit one's particular taste or desire, while there is technically only one variant of Nexus. Therefore, SGS2 is worthy of the award, at least more so than Nexus.

34. taz89 posted on 29 Feb 2012, 11:38

lol gs2 came out beginning of 2011 when it wasn't possible and no other phones had a 720p screen...720p screens only just started coming out the backend of 2011 and nexus has a pentile screen which I wouldnt even a call a true 720p screen like the rezounds. only real thing nexus has going for it over the s2 is the fact that its a Google phone.

37. bucky posted on 29 Feb 2012, 17:49

from the performance i saw having the nexus for a week...maybe they should have just left out the hd screen and made it lag free. The cpu and gpu clearly cannot handle it...oh, and the screen on the nexus isnt better just because its hd. SGS2 screen is not pentile, brighter and MUCH more vibrant.

19. gkquiambao posted on 28 Feb 2012, 23:08 3 4

Galaxy S II is better than Galaxy Nexus IMO. Design-wise, build-wise, performance-wise, SGSII is way better. I don't know anyone who has a Galaxy Nexus. I think its a FAIL.

23. Dark4o90 posted on 29 Feb 2012, 02:09 1 1

Which world are you living in? S2 was anounced in the beginning of the year and it was awesome phone the best for 2011 and it's still the best

9. LoneShaolin posted on 28 Feb 2012, 20:36 5 1

Apple didnt win? Hmm........

29. andro. posted on 29 Feb 2012, 06:09 2 1

Apple didn't win last year either!

32. Borrie69 posted on 29 Feb 2012, 07:11 1 1

apple will never be as good, i am glad that the judges saw that android is far better in every way.

10. WWThinker posted on 28 Feb 2012, 20:39 2 2

@ Dr.Phil. You are right. GSII is the first real competition to iPhone. Unfortunately, Samsung relies on Google to provide half of the "smartphone solution". I always feel that Apple's success simply reflect how stupid the competition are. It is no wonder that Apple sucks up most of the profit of the industries. The situation is very sad.

As I always say: I´m the proud owner of a Ceramic White Glaxy S2... Meet the beast

EDIT: What you have to say about this Phonearena?, where is your Iphone 4S or Nexus?

12. christianqwerty posted on 28 Feb 2012, 21:11 1

Even though the samsung focus has negatively effected my view on samsung, i think the samsung galaxy s2 was really a great phone. Good job. Add some metal and get rid of some plastic and it could be 2x better

20. gkquiambao posted on 28 Feb 2012, 23:12

Add some metal and there will be wifi, gps, 3g problems. There is a reason why its an all-plastic smartphone. I don't care if it looks cheap as long as there is no technical problem because I use protections like Otterbox.

14. Chronos posted on 28 Feb 2012, 21:49 1

No surprise there. It wouldn't even surprise me if Samsung won the same awards next year with the Samsung Galaxy S III being the Smartphone of the Year.

Maybe theese were the blind jury's awards? Or more like it, the bribery jury's awards.

30. andro. posted on 29 Feb 2012, 06:12 1 1

Apple was too busy trying to bride the juries in Germany and forgot to try and bribe their way to the best smartphone title as they hadn't a chance of winning it otherwise. The iPhone didn't win last year and hasn't won this year......if only ifans woke up to this realisation

35. Striker posted on 29 Feb 2012, 14:20

Real people worldiwide (not your ''fans'') are aware enough which is the best smartphone. Samsung Galaxy is(maybe) the most successfull Android smartphone, but its sales, compared to the iPhone's are miniature. Not to mention the manufacture quality, the display defects, the materials etc.

31. som posted on 29 Feb 2012, 06:54 1

Apple is cheating on iPhone lovers it cost about $100 to built and Apple charge $600 and Sprint spend $20 billions on iPhone is a failure.
