Despite selling a record 51 million Apple iPhones in the calendar fourth quarter, Samsung topped the U.S. manufacturer by selling a record 86 million smartphones during the same period. The data, which comes from Strategy Analytics, shows that the Korean manufacturer owns 29.6% of the global smartphone market while Apple's slice of the pie amounts to 17.6%...

It's facts my friend. Samsung marketshare world wide has been larger than Apples for a while now. This is not news. It's just a feel good story because samsung had a really bad quarter for the first time in two years.Apple had a record quarter @ 51,000,000 phones sold. Don't be fooled by Wall Street. Oh and those 86 million were shipped not sold. Tell me why Samsungs profits are down 6 percent for the quarter?

They both had record quarters, but obviously samsung trumped apple. And apple profits also went down 5% and did not meet expectation.

Sorry about the mistake. Apple profits were down over 7%!

Apple's numbers also refer to shipped and not sold. And I take it you have the breakdown of sales of the iphone considering the iphone 4s (thanks to presidential veto) and 5 are still being sold along with the 5c. Also, is "choice" a bad thing? Is the ability to provide different devices at different price points bad for the consumer? Considering iphone has a great deal of its market share in tne US , where it is sold subsidized, and much of the rest of the world is forced to buy phones outright, chances are people paid more for their "cheap" samsung than most Apple customers.

Samsung profit for Q4 is down for 6% because they have some "one time spend" action (paying the workers for the aniversary). Did apple payed their workers (americans)? Oh NO! Is the Foxcon who produce the iPhone! LOL

Yes... one of the things I most dislike about Apple. I hate the idea that something I get and use has been lovingly assembled by near-slave labor in a sweatshop-style factory. This is not just a problem for Apple, though, as other manufacturers like Nokia, Sony, and others also work through Foxconn. It is hard to know whether your product is or isn't forged together in the Foxconn (or similar) suicide-netted work camps.
However, there is a second side to all of this. In China, where Foxconn lives, for those who do not work at Foxconn there are few other good options - especially for women, who are generally stuck with either Foxconn, farm work (gruelling hard labor of a different kind), prostitution, or death as options. In this way, Foxconn actually is an option that lifts them out of the seedier options that they might otherwise have faced. I know that such labor practices as those at Foxconn seem downright awful, but with people throwing themselves at Foxconn to look for a 'job', they are seen as better than almost all alternatives in that part of China.
It is an awful dichotomy to have to deal with. 30 hour shifts at 30 cents an hour, with suicide nets at every window, is horrible, but it may be better for some than any other possibility that meets them. And that is truly a sad tragedy.
I found out that the LG Viper I recently was given by a friend was, thankfully, assembled in South Korea (and not at Foxconn), so, while I don't know the exact conditions of factory work in South Korea, my conscience is [fairly] clear.

Nctx where do you get your numbers. I work for a large carrier in the Us and most iphone sold now through 2013 where the iphone 4 and 4s since they were free. Even if i tried explaining how outdated it was they didint care cause they heard free iphone. they thought they were getting a great deal. Just goes to show how brainwashed iphone users are. If apple was so great how come everytime they update their Os they copy something that android had been doing for yrs?

Why is anyone concerned about how many billions these companies make or billions they sell? It is not like any of us benefit from this, financially. People act like they are cheering a team, almost as bad as people who cheer for the Republican or Democratic candidate.

I too have wondered lol, fine fanboys arguing over who's phones better but arguing over which company sells more or how much money they make that you will never see lol I will never get he'll I barely understand why we bicker over which phone is better but this is another level of stupidity.

For apple fans it doesn't do much since apple just hoards their money in a bank. But the more android devices get sold the more money Google gets and they dont waste time saving it and invest it buying new products, companies to improve android. So it does benefit the consumers. Also the higher your market share the higher developer interest I that platform.

I don't think Google makes near as much money off of Android sales as you think. We need to check the numbers on that to be sure.
As for Apple hoarding money in a bank... well, I was under the impression that they were really hoarding their cash under a mattress somewhere...

Personally, I view excessive profits as one of two things: ripping off an apathetic consumer base, or not investing enough in your people and company.

Let's see...Sammy sold 35 mil more phones than Apple. Sammy has like 50 different cheap phones that they sell worldwide. Not only that, they were selling on China mobile that has over 700 million subscribers. If you ask me, the 86 mil Sammy sold makes apple look good.

Apple had 60% market share in the US when it was only on AT&T. It is now 43% in the US after Verizon, Sprint, Tmo, Virgin Mo, US cellular, Cricket......So, adding carriers doesn't really add market share apparently.
82. domfonusr (Posts: 384; Member since: 17 Jan 2014)
Got a link to source the 60% US market share on AT&T alone claim? I have to call BS on that.

Most of the phones that samsung sold were low end phones to third world countries.
71. domfonusr (Posts: 384; Member since: 17 Jan 2014)
Absolutely nothing. Samsung can sell phones to people that Apple can't even hope to.

This is the market share vs profit debate. In the end, the ones with the biggest profits wins. One reason is reinvestment of technology and infrastructure. Personally, I have no value of arguing between which is better, but people have to understand that arguing market share is pointless. Secondly, their are so many Android manufacturers as you can't see how well each company is performing. To say Android is winning the market share battle is half the story. It takes money to run a business, thus for long term business you must reinvest.

I've always said, on this question, "follow the money."
