Samsung responds to benchmark-rigging allegations claiming it's innocent
0. phoneArena 31 Jul 2013, 07:47 posted on
If you weren't around yesterday, here's what you missed: AnandTech has pretty much alleged that Samsung rigs benchmarks outright with a line of code on the Galaxy S4, which bumps its GPU clock from 480MHz to 533MHz, resulting in an 11% bump in scores...

good thing theres real tech sites that actually know something, and looks deep into tech. Not just internet repost sites like PA.
2. xperiaDROID (limited) (Posts: 4852; Member since: 08 Mar 2013)
You can't blame PA for that, since there are many newbies here like Chris P. and Ivan S.
7. tech2 (Posts: 1342; Member since: 26 Oct 2012)
Their author might be newbies but not PA !
PA, has been like this ever since their inception ! Just like I can't blame your dad if you are a useless kid trolling every other article on PA by posting mind numbing fanboy comments. You can't blame PA for their 2 authors only!

Are we really shocked that OEM's might be manipulating their numbers? Really?!?
There is so much integrity in the mobile game right? Like no one EVER copies each other & no one ever tweaks their numbers right?
This is a honest & a full of honor industry right?
C'mon this has been happening since umm.... FOREVER!!! lol
35. wumberpeb (Posts: 406; Member since: 14 Mar 2011)
AMD/ATI and Nvidia have been tweaking their drivers for desktops for years now, just trying to edge out the competition for a few extra points in 3D Mark or various other benchmarks. Why hammer anyone in the mobile scene for pumping up frequencies? Different means, same ends, we all win
49. Nathan_ingx (Posts: 2964; Member since: 07 Mar 2012)
So why not say "clocked to 480MHz (turbo boost to 533MHz)"??
42. Dr.Phil (Posts: 821; Member since: 14 Feb 2011)
So let me get this straight, you all are on here complaining about how useless PA but yet you actively choose to come on this site and comment on the articles. That makes perfect sense (sarcasm).
If you don't like it then why don't you go to some other tech site then and comment on their stories? No one is telling you that you have to go on here.
And if you want to use a parent/child anaology, you are acting like a little child crying and screaming at his mother because she bought him the wrong action figure. In other words, you're starting to sound like a little brat.
43. Dr.Phil (Posts: 821; Member since: 14 Feb 2011)
I typed this on my phone so I apologize there were some errors that I didnt catch until after it posted.
45. tech2 (Posts: 1342; Member since: 26 Oct 2012)
Apology accepted ! ;)
If would've read my comment no. 5 below you would realize I am not actually trying to bash PA. I use PA as my daily driver for tech news and there is no denying PA is the most informative of'em all !
However, that doesn't mean this site is perfect I only made my points to make this site a bit better, if at all it catches the eye of PA's authors. Infact, if you'd understood my comment you'll realize I was actually defending PA's authors. My point was, instead of copy/paste from other tech sites PA should also churn new articles themselves. Its quite obligatory if not mandatory for PA to post their own content especially them being such a global tech site.
With regards to my analogy, it was meant sarcastically for xperiaDROID and had nothing to do with anyone/anything.
Have a nice day ! :)
46. Dr.Phil (Posts: 821; Member since: 14 Feb 2011)
I wasn't singling you out. I did say "you all" which would imply everyone above you that were going on about how PA sucks.
4. AngryAppleCustomer. (Posts: 30; Member since: 01 May 2013)
I upvoted faster than Usain Bolt sprinting downhill on a speeding Lamborghini.
5. tech2 (Posts: 1342; Member since: 26 Oct 2012)
Agreed. No other site posts so much news as PA but hardly any material they post is theirs'. Every other website from time to time do their research & creative thinking and post something from their own head but sadly PA being such a pronounced website don't do that....smh
Even their reviews (especially video) are boring. No editing skills and choosing careful words nothing unique whatsoever.
PS - I dont wish to bash PA but they really need to lift their quality now as they are pretty well known !
9. itsdeepak4u2000 (Posts: 2111; Member since: 03 Nov 2012)
Don't blame PA, some news are even first on PA and late on other sites. Yes, for some things they need to pull up their socks and do great.
BTW, Sammy smartly defended the argument.

Anti-samsung fans are really starved these days, they'll take any negative and blow it up to huge proportions. They sure had a feast yesterday. Crazy hungry fans.
24. number29 (Posts: 131; Member since: 25 Jan 2013)
The anti-Apple fans have been doing the same thing for years. Now it's Samsung who face the wrath of these idiots.
6. Bootutu (Posts: 163; Member since: 11 Jul 2013)
There's your answer, it works at 533MHz in other apps too, 480MHz is to protect your phone, all that drama for nothing, suck it up.
32. TylerGrunter (Posts: 782; Member since: 16 Feb 2012)
And you believe them?
Anand found the list of applications allowed for 533MHz and all of them were Benchmarks, it's a white list, not a black list for games.
44. zack89 (Posts: 1; Member since: 31 Jul 2013)
Really? Do you have some proof of that?
Look at Update on GPU Optimizations in Galaxy S4 on Anandtech :)
8. wendygarett (unregistered)
I will never surf Anandtech anymore, this site always against Samsung... And everyone know Samsung is innocent as always... Gsmarena done much better reviews than this anandturd
16. darkkjedii (Posts: 9349; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
I notice when you switch into I love Sammy/android mode your profile pic switches to that phone. When you switch back to I love apple/iOS, your profile pic switches to a pretty girl. Hmmmmmm
25. darkkjedii (Posts: 9349; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
I can't help but notice that WM LOL. Like clockwork bro.
31. hboy857 (Posts: 130; Member since: 03 Jun 2013)
Your are the biggest idiot ever in the history of mankind. It's a good thing that you won't visit Anandtech. Anandtech don't need this kind of idiot. period.
34. wendygarett (unregistered)
You sir are so wrong!!! And my green thumb tells that, how many green do you have? What a shame...
37. darkkjedii (Posts: 9349; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
We've known for eons, that attention is what you crave. You're no techie, you're an attention insert expletive here _ _ _ _ _!
38. yudi.nemesis (Posts: 1127; Member since: 14 Mar 2013)
That’s nothing wrong with anandtech because everything what they have said is also comes with solid proof.
but i’m not suprised if you hate anandtech cuz samsung fanboy like you will never be able to accept the truth. and everybody knows that samsung mindless fanboys will always defend samsung no matter how much dirty move that samsung do.
like it or not anandtech is one of the best site when it comes to detailed reviews.
58. Captain_Doug (Posts: 736; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
Yeah, cuz Samsung has never done anything shady... AnandTech is an amazing website.
10. tiara6918 (Posts: 1247; Member since: 26 Apr 2012)
It's not just pa who posted an article about the s4 cheating the benchmark application. So please do not bash this website

Season 3 episode 10...damn! Didn't expect the ending!
It was a painful closure to the season.

Benchmarking IS performance boosting, rarely if ever there are situations - gaming including - when CPU and GPU is constantly hitting 100%. What Samsung does is allowing certain short burst apps to use a "turbo clock", but for heat, throttling and battery reasons they have a maximum policy for long-period high-demand stuff like games. It's for the better good.
Benchmarking never told the real-life story only MAXIMUM capabilities, and simply put, 533MHz on the PowerVR GPU is the maximum, so benchmark readings are REAL.
No drama folks, it's all about optimizations and it's better to have more consistent performance at a lower clock than constant slowdowns due to extra heat and throttling. Samsung is actually doing the customer a favor.
14. darkkjedii (Posts: 9349; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Samsung, IF you're guilty of this...shame on you. Samsung makes a great line of devices, no need to tamper. Think of all the butthurt Sammites that are in mom's basement crying rite now, as they run quadrant standards and geek bench with tears, sadness, and distrust. In other news Jeter homers on the first pitch he sees.
20. umadden (banned) (Posts: 90; Member since: 14 Apr 2013)
Seems like you're the one who's buttmad and raging on PA from your mom's basement.
27. darkkjedii (Posts: 9349; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Nope I love Samsung, and tech period. Also I have my own home, left moms a long time ago. My love for tech is why I said "If". Looks like I hit a nerve dude.
30. fanboy1974 (Posts: 998; Member since: 12 Nov 2011)
"IF you're guilty...shame on you"
Guess this article was not enough. These devices do not have the same power luxuries or thermal headroom such as desktop computers or laptops. All Samsung is doing is intelligent monitoring/throttling to conserve power and limit heat in a portable device. Sure you can keep the GPU at 533mhz but the phone will always be hot and your battery will suffer. More customers are going to notice a hot device compared to a 3 frame per second drop in angry birds. If it really bothers people then you can clock the cpu/gpu until your hands cook with a different kernel.

After caught hiring people to bash others on the net and now this! I wonder what else samsung is doing at its dirty tricks department!
22. Samsungadroidrules (Posts: 104; Member since: 28 Jul 2013)
Oh Really? Any proof that Samsung did that? Haha You jealous Hater, just go on and use your boring crap iPhone. haha
23. xperiaDROID (limited) (Posts: 4852; Member since: 08 Mar 2013)
I can assume that you're a newbie here. You sir, being a Samsung lover, didn't know that your beloved company had a dirty history?
41. Shatter (Posts: 1766; Member since: 29 May 2013)
Every company does this.
Theres a reason when you run custom roms the developers can boost benchmarks scores way above what they should be. There are other devs that get rid of the built in benchmark faking so people think the custom roms suck.
21. Samsungadroidrules (Posts: 104; Member since: 28 Jul 2013)
Anandtech probably were paid by Apple. Lol. Or maybe, they are iFans and bored with their iPhones as there is also no great news coming about Apple. Lol. Anyways, Great Job Samsung, You nailed it. Don't worry, Millions of Loyal Samsung consumers won't believe these issues made by your stupid competitors to put you guys down. Loving my Samsung GS4 Black Mist! :)
51. Taters (Posts: 2403; Member since: 28 Jan 2013)
Anandtech is extremely biased against Samsung. It is pretty obvious that all the benchmarks they choose to champion are either gpu or browser based. Those are the only two categories Apple doesn't look bad. The iPhone with chrome has terrible benchmarks even but they just leave it out and only benchmark with safari vs. Slow as chrome on android. Which is kind of backwards especially when chrome is on both operating systems which would make for a more fair comparison.
28. R-vjn (Posts: 130; Member since: 07 Jan 2013)
Well, samsung always have scored high on benchmarks especially with thieir EXYNOS chips but failed to deliver in real world performance. They really know that most of the sites still compare the performance of phones based upon stupid benchmarks.
The Nexus 4, especially with the 4.3 is the smoothest android phone I've ever used but just check the benchmark and will see the difference between the scores and real world performance.
55. cheetah2k (Posts: 739; Member since: 16 Jan 2011)
Huh? I have both devices and IMO the Exynos version much smoother in real world performance - especially in the games department.
I'm guessing you've never even used the Exynos i9500...
And as for the Nexus 4 being the smoothest android phone you've ever used, its totaly clear you've not even touched the S4...
60. R-vjn (Posts: 130; Member since: 07 Jan 2013)
haha, you are free to check my youtube videos..
61. R-vjn (Posts: 130; Member since: 07 Jan 2013)
also i don't really understand why you have to be so rude on your reply on my comment..gosh, clearly explains that you are a sammy fan.
I'm just pointing out the truth my friend..and I've used the S4 with Exynos. Well, my youtube videos are the only way by which I could make you know that I've been using both, though Nexus 4 is my day-2-day driver.

36. xtian1103 (Posts: 352; Member since: 11 Feb 2012)
if you pay a visit in asia most specially china, vietnam, philippines, the most copied device you will find is no other than the galaxy series. it's dreadfully similar nowadays even the touchwiz is the same, well unless you take a look at the internals you'll find out the real samsung. even the mother of all mobile thieves is being ripped off.
39. Samsungadroidrules (Posts: 104; Member since: 28 Jul 2013)
There are few samsung haters here. I wonder what they can say bad now or probably they are digging small issues about samsung and make it big deal just for the sake that they can say crap things about Samsung, Wooooaaa. Samsung phones rules! And will be for the next 20 years. hahaha
40. gazmatic (Posts: 502; Member since: 06 Sep 2012)
real world performance still count and PA has stated that google edition is better than touchwiz
50. synot (Posts: 85; Member since: 14 Sep 2012)
Phonearenas authors need to do research before writing articles and consult companies before
writing embarrasing articles which is found to be in error just a day after. The Author of yesterdays article should have consult Samsung before accusing them of conspiracy based on other peoples journalism..
52. Taters (Posts: 2403; Member since: 28 Jan 2013)
I don't even know why Samsung responded...... The GPU runs at 533 on benchmarks, which are apps, that are available on the GOOGLE play store. I believe this is a first. Samsung had to apologize for accurately marketing that their GPU is rated at 533. If it runs some apps at 533 then it runs some apps at 533....what is there to defend.
53. Ninetysix (Posts: 1086; Member since: 08 Oct 2012)
if I buy a 533 graphics card, I want all my shiz to run at 533 and not 480. i can't believe you're not seeing the issue here...LOL...
57. iushnt (Posts: 477; Member since: 06 Feb 2013)
if some app doesnt utilize the full 1.6ghz A15 quadcore then thats not the fault of samsung. You haven't bought gs4 then why are you worried :)..cheerup dude, don't get low for this news
62. Ninetysix (Posts: 1086; Member since: 08 Oct 2012)
Got some bad news for you. I've had my S4 for about 6 weeks now.
59. Taters (Posts: 2403; Member since: 28 Jan 2013)
LOL There is no such thing as a graphics card that runs every single game to the max each time. If you believe that then I don't know what to say.. ROFL
In fact, they are rarely taxed. not even Crysis maxes out everything.
The fact that some benchmark apps and the camera and calendar pushes the gpu to the 533 max is actually quite rare. usually the max is used less than that. Apple being the worse, under clocking the A5 in the iphone 4s to 800mhz and passing off that weak under clocked variant as the same power hungry much more powerful one in the ipad 2.
