Samsung pays people to protest outside Australian Apple Store; goal is to mock iSheep culture
0. phoneArena 26 Apr 2012, 18:03 posted on
Samsung used an Australian marketing firm to provide it with protesters to stand outside an Apple Store in Australia and chant "Wake Up"; the idea is to deride Apple iPhone and Apple iPad users for being sheep and following everyone else by buying the devices...

Yeah, because dressing in black uniforms and following the beck and call of some guy with a megaphone because a multi-billion dollar corporation pays you too is so much more enlightened...

More example of sour grapes by Samsung.
If I ran Samsung, rather than spending the money on such a stupid marketing ploy, I rather offer contests for free special edition Samsung phones. I will spend the same amount of money, get more free publicity, and be positive in the process.
53. plgladio (Posts: 311; Member since: 05 Dec 2011)
That is the reason you are not running Samsung.
Also they are contests. This is all marketing, what you think will not be the same like others and you can't expect the same.
Even I don't like Apple but this is too much from Sammy..

And that's precisely why it's genius, because it is stupid, so it is perfect for all of those iDiots!

I agree I love my Galaxy Note but Don't like Samsungs current campaign against Apple they should show off the power and features of their devices not belittle the "sheep" and hope they will turn around and buy a product from the company that teased them that will never convert them.
75. Commentator (Posts: 1869; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
Positive advertisements are more effective than negative ones, especially when it comes to fostering brand-loyalty. Who's to say that somebody won't see this protest and go out and buy a Windows Phone instead, simply because they have the lowest consumer base and therefore the lowest amount of "sheep." I also think it's kind of disingenuous for a manufacturer of Android phones to be doing this to Apple when Android has twice the market share of iOS.

Look like they are telling to Apple store employees that Samsung are copying your iPhone, iPad and Apple Store so wake up.
77. RobotMan (Posts: 119; Member since: 13 Apr 2012)
”Samsung Electronics Australia has nothing to do with the ‘Wake-Up Campaign” the company told SlashGear today.
Maybe, just maybe, it was done by Apple. To make Samsung lay low on it ad .
78. Commentator (Posts: 1869; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
No, I don't think Apple would try to draw attention to its competitors like that. Apple has always marketed as though the iPhone is "the only phone there is." It's probably just some social activist nutjobs who would do the same thing to Samsung.

photo description: "How Samsung sees Apple iPhone and Apple iPad users"
It should be: "How EVERYONE sees Apple iPhone and Apple iPad users"
7. Commentator (Posts: 1869; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
No, that's pretty much how a small minority of tech-interested people (including myself, I'll admit) sees Apple users. The vast majority of people in the world see them as people who made the choice to spend their money on Apple products instead of something else and don't give it much more thought.
74. rf1975 (Posts: 220; Member since: 01 Aug 2011)
So the world see the Samsung users as blacksheeps......
4. Mark.J.Linskiy (unregistered)
Haha, love it. Samsung is just having some fun, but that is how most people view Apple product users. As long as it's entertaining, I'm fine with it, lol.
50. KFear (Posts: 119; Member since: 06 Feb 2012)
Most people DO NOT see apple users as SHEEP. They see a terrific product that has great features and is USER FRIENDLY. I'm an android fanatic, but i certainly admire the iphone, it's just not my product of choice and I don't agree with Apples politics. But again, most people don't see Apple or their customers this way. This is a poor campain.
51. bbblader (Posts: 520; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
so the subtext is that you don't want to buy movies and music and pirate them?
5. Berzerk000 (Posts: 3269; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
It is extreme, but the message is true. People do need to wake up about Apple products. I absolutely can't stand people who buy one of their products and then brag about how it's the best thing in the world, and when I ask them why, all they say is "Because it's made by Apple" and all I can think of in my head is... You have to be kidding me. I hate those "Because it's an iPhone" commercials. All the stuck up people who blindly follow Apple's lead. If you buy Apple products because of the OS, I don't mind, that's your opinion and I have nothing against that (I actually like their desktops, their alright) but if you get one JUST because it's made by Apple, and you didn't even bother to look at what any other manufacturer had to offer, and tried it for yourself, I have little to no respect for you.
23. Commentator (Posts: 1869; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
I think you're taking it a little far to have "no respect" for somebody. They're purchasing a cell-phone, not murdering their children or hiring prostitutes or any other ethically-dubious action that warrants a loss of respect. Many of these consumers are probably genuine, good-hearted people with loving families who don't have the time to nitpick what they want in a smartphone like we do. To most people, smartphones make up a tiny, nearly-insignificant part of their lives.
52. TheGreatXavi (Posts: 10; Member since: 27 Nov 2011)
wow thats true...... for me smartphone is just another gadget.....i rather look around music store 3 hours to buy good guitar than smartphone.....not everyvody is gadget geek you know

This touches on a comment I made before:
A lot of people buy iPhones just because there iPhones. A lot of them don't really know anything about dual core, quad core, etc. Their just buying iPhone because they want to have that phone they see constantly in the media and hears about in the news. Most iPhone costumers go in to the store saying "I want an iPhone." Hell, some of the older people don't even know what the damn thing looks like, and parents get them because thats what their children want, and the children want it so they can be like the stars and the popular kids playing their Gameloft games. It's very rare that costumers are well informed about the specs or any of the other phones on the market when purchasing an iPhone. The iPhone's best asset is its name. People hear iPhone and think "Oh, thats the best because, that's the phone the stars have right?" and the don't even go thought the trouble of seeing what else is on the market. It's commodity fetishism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodity_fetishism). The iPhone in are society symbolizes "status" just like what we say before with Blackberry's. We saw it with the Instagram fiasco. The general reation put forth by iPhone users was basically "don't let those poor android users have what we have!". That doesn't sound like a reaction from a well informed costumer to me when there price difference between top android phones and the iPhone are not far apart. Thats not to say that there aren't well informed costumers buying iPhones as well but, they mostly do it for the extraordinary developer support of the App Store. Almost all major dev's put there app on the App Store before any other app market be it the Play Store or Windows Phone. Some of them don't even bother to put there apps anywhere else at all and there are reasons. The point is thought that Apple really doesn't have to be the best in spec. department, they only have to be just a good as their competitors and they will still win in sales because Apple keeps their devices in the media. The only way that will change is if people become informed about the other phones on the market.

If i was one of the Apple workers i would make a sign that said "Go f**k Yourself" and yell it at them and see how they like it....
10. Mark.J.Linskiy (unregistered)
I doubt they'd care much, and it'd probably make the Apple store employee look ridiculous..
16. Mark.J.Linskiy (unregistered)
Lol yeah, but that'd most likely get him/her in some trouble with the Manager or whoever.
9. xoutrageousx (Posts: 70; Member since: 22 Dec 2011)
samsung is just desperate for attention, what good it does attacking other users? make them come over to them when they are just making fun of them?
13. Mark.J.Linskiy (unregistered)
Hasn't Apple been doing that a whole lot in the court rooms ("attacking" wise)?
11. ithinkimjoe (Posts: 25; Member since: 19 Jan 2012)
so, samsung is busy spending money trying to call Apple users sheep; when, they're effectively trying to DO THE EXACT SAME THING with their products. they're just not nearly as successful.
15. EclipseGSX (Posts: 1330; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
So you're saying Apple is successful in making their users sheep?
17. GeekMovement (Posts: 1115; Member since: 09 Sep 2011)
Interesting to see how aggressive Samsung is becoming..

employment must be down in Australia to pay people to act like sheeps and scream at "sheeps"
20. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
This shows Samsung is desperate and doesn't believe in their product.
25. Commentator (Posts: 1869; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
I don't agree with this statement, as Samsung is raking in the cash from their Android sales. That being said, I don't see how this can help them at all. If I saw this in person I'd be annoyed at Samsung because they're obviously taking up a good deal of the sidewalk and I'd have to go around them and drown out their screams.
32. Non_Sequitur (Posts: 1111; Member since: 16 Mar 2012)
I know people that don't even know what an Android is. Samsung is still a leader in the market, but this is to rake in even MORE sales. It's not a terrible idea, but it honestly isn't a great one either. They should've done it a different way instead of making fools of themselves.
26. matrix_neo (Posts: 306; Member since: 03 Nov 2011)
Nope! Samsung is desperate to wake up sheeps like you and should believe that apple products is not the only products that exist or being sold in the market. There are so many of it that way too far better than apple's own products. If they don't believe in their product why they still continue producing it and making it better every year. These sheeps need to be free and have choices, not always follow what they we're being told to do so.
21. bucky (Posts: 1095; Member since: 30 Sep 2009)
I love my sgs2 but this somehow seems really desperate.

Next up Samsung will pay people to stand in line for the GSIII launch since they can't get real customers to line up.
Anyone remember when Samsung set up tents outside of Apple stores and gave away their phones for free. Sad...
35. protozeloz (Posts: 5188; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
why? I mean they where the best android seller and the biggest smartphone seller. they had nice Galaxy S2 and Note sales, I don't see where you trying to get
36. networkdood (Posts: 4749; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
A free Samsung GS2 or GS3 is a far better deal than anything that apple has to offer....
38. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
If that was the case they wouldn't have to give them away
30. pongkie (Posts: 475; Member since: 20 Aug 2011)
kinda cheap shot marketing ... don't like it at all they are attacking customers by shaming them in public.
67. frydaexiii (Posts: 1132; Member since: 01 Dec 2011)
lol, only real sheep will feel insulted and angry at this. Regular people who just hopped on the bandwagon will just feel embarrassed and actually give other phones consideration and realize other phones are way better.
33. protozeloz (Posts: 5188; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
I cant facepalm hard enough....
what a waist of money
37. networkdood (Posts: 4749; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
Well, those Australian customers who purchase the iPhone will feel embarrassed when they see someone with a GS2 or GS3....
39. williamchoo (Posts: 1; Member since: 26 Apr 2012)
OMG! I am no Apple fan or user but this is CHEAP!!! And Samsung dare to call others' marketing unethical? This is another joke!
47. tiara6918 (Posts: 1103; Member since: 26 Apr 2012)
Yeah...they just said to nokia that the blown away by lumia was clearly unethical. But look at what they're doing now
40. markOZ (Posts: 1; Member since: 26 Apr 2012)
You guys really need to do a little bit more journalistic research (and some maths along the way). The countdown timer does not even end in correlation with the Samsung event at May 3rd at London (May 4th, 4.00am AET Australian Eastern) – it ends approximately 3 freaking days after on May 6 around 3.00pm GMT+10. So that precludes this racket has anything to do with the new phone or Samsung.
It does however involve the many issues raised by some independent groups in my country (WAKE UP AUSTRALIA is one of them), which seem to be what the real protest is about – raising economic uncertainty, unecessary (mideast) wars, ugly consumerism, global resource dis-appropriation and political mismanagement of funds, monopolistic banks etc etc… you know, the "real" world issues.
Apple was probably first of many singled out due to it being a very visible icon and is a contentiously ‘guilty’ contributor to part of these issues. Cue the same protest news generated by Greenpeace on Apple's 'un-green' energy use - yes, you'd better believe there ARE other interest groups out to get Apple and the likes.
In the video, the blogger even mentioned the group moved onto other locations downtown. Similar mob groups of the same campaign were also in Melbourne and other major aussie cities, although nowhere near an Apple store. They were against those corporate and financial big-wigs to send their message accross.
In saying so, I have absolutely no relation or interest in their 'cause'...just outlining how narrow-minded some people can choose to be when arriving to conclusions about what they see - Samsung vs Apple??? LOL, really... remove your blinkers next time - there are actually much bigger concerns in the world than this!
41. rome1987 (Posts: 6; Member since: 26 May 2011)
why not spend the money on Ads to show everyone why your product is better? How does it benifit you to call your compition customers names? I just think it would be better to show them what their missing out on with android and not just lable them as followers because some people like the iphone for more than just "it's made by apple".
44. rudlie (Posts: 181; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
because they already give up. samsung already shows their product none better the apple's product, actually. samsung's ads can not works to gain sympathies and they try to attack the apple's user because they tired to change apple's user loyalty. samsung try to do this at the countries who has biggest apple users on a country.
42. CWBAlfredo (Posts: 28; Member since: 26 Apr 2012)
This is ludicrous. This is not helping samsung's brand image at all. They're just upset because their better spec gs2 isn't selling as well as apple's product. If they want to win over apple customers, they shouldn't be shouting at them and telling th they're stupid, they should be marketing their own product. Why not plaster a poster with a gs2 outside the window of the apple store rather than protesting?
