Samsung on why it went PenTile with the Galaxy S III display: It's the longevity, silly!
0. phoneArena posted on 11 May 2012, 02:41
Samsung apparently deems PenTile superior for an AMOLED screen longevity. We know that blue subpixels deteriorate orders of magnitude faster in an OLED screen die to the nature of their components, compared to the long-lasting green and red. With recent advancements in the blue diodes, this has been remedied to an extent, but on the research phase, and not yet implemented in mass production, it seems...

Samsung knows whatever it fit, you fandroids will buy. So yeah, it's fine..
Does that sound familiar somewhere with a fruit?
2. mrochester (unregistered) posted on 11 May 2012, 02:59 12
I know your comment is tongue in cheek, but it is broadly correct. Any device you buy requires you to compromise in one way or another. The pentile screen is a compromise that you have to decide whether you can live with just the same as the 3.5" screen on the iPhone is a compromise you have to decide whether you can live with. It's NEVER a case of buying something just because, it's a case of weighing up the pros and cons and buying whatever device has the most pros for you.
3. adi4u4882 posted on 11 May 2012, 03:15 14
That goes for you. All you sheeps buy a iPhone 4S which only had a improvement over the CPU.
7. mrochester (unregistered) posted on 11 May 2012, 03:29 3
Stupid comments don't get you anywhere. You know fine well that there were more improvements to the 4S other than the CPU.
11. chadrick0814 posted on 11 May 2012, 04:08 13
Improvements like 4g??? I guess that's not important.
24. remixfa posted on 11 May 2012, 06:46 8
Samsung gives you devices of all shapes and sizes to fit your needs. If you dont want pentile, you can still go get an SGS2 and its quite powerful. Apple forces you to take one size and like it.
Longevity is a great buzzword, but the truth is that the RGB version isnt ready for production yet. So you either get pentile, which every review says is still one of the best looking screens ever... or you wait another 3-6 months for RGB. For what is such a minor difference between the 2, ill take the pentile. I have one now and I have noooo problem with it.
56. gallitoking posted on 11 May 2012, 16:49 1
wow remix you just repeated what the article says.. cheers?.. keep drinking that juice
62. mrochester (unregistered) posted on 12 May 2012, 02:19 0
To all intents and purposes, Samsung are giving you no choice either. If you want their latest, high end phone, it's pentile or nothing; You're "forced" by Samsung to buy last years technology if you want an RGB screen. That's not really a very good choice, is it?
I think you're also forgetting that consumers are able to freely choose between any number of smartphones that are on the market, from £30 PAYG Android devices to £700 iPhone 4S's. No one is forced to buy anything.

Basically Samsung believes they are very strong in the market and they can release ay piece of Garbage and excpect to sell.
That means they beleive there are a lot of Samsung Sheeps out there.
12. chadrick0814 posted on 11 May 2012, 04:15 13
I don't get it. The article clearly points out that it costs more for Samsung to produce pen tile than RGB. Wouldn't it be easier to sell the cheaper RGB to the "sheep?"
13. Non_Sequitur posted on 11 May 2012, 04:20 11
But they won't. Because Samsung wants quality and wants to do what is best... The screen will still be S-AMOLED and 720p with an even sharper-looking pentile screen. It'll still look beautiful.
26. SleepingOz posted on 11 May 2012, 07:56 2

Dude get the hell out of here.
If you want to give your money to samsung and get a garbage phone like this in return then go ahead and buy it.
I won't buy it though because is not worth it.
i will not find any reasons to support this device because im am not a Samsung fanboy either.

No, it basically means that Samsung, like any other manufacturer, has had to weigh up the pros and cons of using certain tech in their products and make a decision and go with it. I really REALLY *REALLY* hope some people finally take note and realise this and hopefully we can put an end to the constant, petty, irritating "bashing" that goes on. Sadly, I'm not holding out much hope of such a mature response...

18months is too less. A fully unlocked $600 smartphone should atleast sustain for 5yrs.
15. darac posted on 11 May 2012, 04:30 9
Alrighty, this explained it.
Kudos, Samsung, seems that you've put your best in that screen after all.
Keeping the same relative sharpness as the GNex, (as hinted in the article), but boosting the brightness(300+nits vs those bad 200+ on GNex), and size significantly.
Can't wait to check it out - now i believe it'll be just good enough for me.

If we are sheeps to samsung its better than to be a sheep to a fashion phone like iphone. I still have my bluetooth, file manager,2500ma batt,5.3"hd amoled screen which looks better than the 3.5 on the iphone for me,clear call speakers, plastic but very durable, usb connectivity and sd card functions. I will be a sheep to samsung than to apple, why myst i own a phone which cant send a simple picture to a friend through bluetooth? I pity you guys, wake up from your slumbers.

Plus you haven't seen the Iphone5 so shut up.
And you admit in public you are a Samsung sheep?
You shouldn't be anybodies sheep ,no samsung no apple.
You should care about your money and spend them wisely.

I haven't said one word regarding upgrading to the SGS3. My question to you is what is your definition of spending money wisely, yet you avoided they question and used profanity. Seems like you're the one who need some manners and to grow up.
Another person who has some reading problems on PA. Seems like taco and you will be good friends.
Once again, I'm going to ask, what is your definition of spending money wisely.
50. martinlosha (unregistered) posted on 11 May 2012, 12:04 0
Spending your money wisely means not spending them for Bulls**t like this phone.
What phone you have?
Tell me what phone you have and i will tell you how t spend your money wisely.
51. gwuhua1984 posted on 11 May 2012, 12:08 0
Okay, so what do you consider as trash, and what not?
My phone is pretty out of date in my opinion and I am actively looking for a replacement, but unfortunately SGS3 isn't on the list right now. However, I'm still curious, what do you consider as trash, and what not. So far you've told me that the SGS3 is trash, but you haven't told me what you would consider as spending money wisely.
55. martinlosha (unregistered) posted on 11 May 2012, 15:24 0
Let me explain to you what i mean Spending your money wisely....
You said you have a dated phone and you want to upgrade, let me tell you what i would do if i was you.
I would first root my old phone and overclock it,make it a little faster and see if i am satisfied with my device and keep my money.
If i still need something faster then i wouldn't jump to a quad core immediately but i would see if i can get a dual core in a good price example Galaxy S2,Some HTC phones or even a Lumnia 800 would be a good deal.Look what you need and don't be a fanboy, nobody needs these quad core Bulls**t phones because these phones are not much faster than the previous dual core processors.
Phone brands want to make money but they are not making anything dramatically new.....
Yes the S3 is garbage for the money you pay, some of the specs this phone has are kind of dated example the screen and camera plus the build quality is not premium but i bet Samsung will charge the device 500$+ that's what i call steeling peoples money.
57. gwuhua1984 posted on 11 May 2012, 18:19 0
Seems like you know what you're talking about. The only thing is, you're just really unhappy that the SGS3 didn't reach your expectation. Even if you're unhappy, it's because of your own point of views that you're unhappy. I have a 1.0 phone that's i've OC'ed to 1.8, any dual core phone and above would be an upgrade for me. I'd still get a quad core because I know eventually I'll be able to OC a 1.5 quad core phone to a higher clock.
To tell you the truth, I would find people who are planning to buy SGS3 much better than those who just follow Apple's iPhone release blindly, just because "it's an iPhone, it's Apple and almost everyone around me has it". No need to use iPhone 5 as an argument because it's not even officially announced yet. The specs for SGS3 is definitely impressive, specs wise it's definitely top of the line right now who knows for how long. If I was to buy a SGS3, it would be for the hardware specs and features, not for the screen or design cause yes, I think the design is ugly. To you it may not be worth it. To others, they may have found their perfect phone.
To tell you the truth, if Remix was to reply to your rants. I'd bet he'd called you a crying whiner.

23. RobotMan posted on 11 May 2012, 06:21 0
Nobody want to beat a small 3.5" screen. It only for little girls used.
25. remixfa posted on 11 May 2012, 06:48 3
the retina only looks sharp because its so small. its a lower resolution and would not still be "retina" at 4.8 inches.. in fact, it would be subpar.
33. martinlosha (unregistered) posted on 11 May 2012, 10:04 0
What about the New Ipad?
The screen of the New Ipad is big but still Retina.
36. remixfa posted on 11 May 2012, 10:33 0
its not retina.
retina denotes anything above 300ppi. its a marketing term that just basically means you cant see pixels.
LCD2, Super Amoled 720 pentile, and a bunch of other screens all qualify as retina
the new ipad screen is higher resolution, but it falls well short of 300ppi.
46. martinlosha (unregistered) posted on 11 May 2012, 11:49 0
Are you serious?
54. remixfa posted on 11 May 2012, 15:17 0
yes. dont believe me? Phone Arena has this tab on the side for phones and tablets. look up the ipad3. Its well below the 300ppi threshold. People are just excited because the old iPad had a very low res screen on it.
Retina is a marketing gimmick that Apple is misusing.
64. mrochester (unregistered) posted on 12 May 2012, 02:34 0
The term 'Retina Display' is based on more than just the basic PPI of the screen. The whole point of the term is to describe a screen where, at the average viewing distance, you cannot discern the individual pixels. As such, a screen that you hold, on average, further away from you doesn't require as high a PPI as a screen that you hold, on average, closer to you.
This is how the new iPad screen is also a Retina Display.

When I saw the title stating that Samsung was using PenTile technology on thus GS3, I thought to myself that I'm not going to be getting one. Now that I've read the article, ill just have to wait and see what the screen/device is like. I've still got a while to ask though before I can renew my contract.
