Samsung on why it went PenTile with the Galaxy S III display: It's the longevity, silly!

0. phoneArena 11 May 2012, 02:41 posted on

Samsung apparently deems PenTile superior for an AMOLED screen longevity. We know that blue subpixels deteriorate orders of magnitude faster in an OLED screen die to the nature of their components, compared to the long-lasting green and red. With recent advancements in the blue diodes, this has been remedied to an extent, but on the research phase, and not yet implemented in mass production, it seems...

Samsung knows whatever it fit, you fandroids will buy. So yeah, it's fine..

Does that sound familiar somewhere with a fruit?

I know your comment is tongue in cheek, but it is broadly correct. Any device you buy requires you to compromise in one way or another. The pentile screen is a compromise that you have to decide whether you can live with just the same as the 3.5" screen on the iPhone is a compromise you have to decide whether you can live with. It's NEVER a case of buying something just because, it's a case of weighing up the pros and cons and buying whatever device has the most pros for you.

Stupid comments don't get you anywhere. You know fine well that there were more improvements to the 4S other than the CPU.

Samsung gives you devices of all shapes and sizes to fit your needs. If you dont want pentile, you can still go get an SGS2 and its quite powerful. Apple forces you to take one size and like it.

Longevity is a great buzzword, but the truth is that the RGB version isnt ready for production yet. So you either get pentile, which every review says is still one of the best looking screens ever... or you wait another 3-6 months for RGB. For what is such a minor difference between the 2, ill take the pentile. I have one now and I have noooo problem with it.

To all intents and purposes, Samsung are giving you no choice either. If you want their latest, high end phone, it's pentile or nothing; You're "forced" by Samsung to buy last years technology if you want an RGB screen. That's not really a very good choice, is it?

I think you're also forgetting that consumers are able to freely choose between any number of smartphones that are on the market, from £30 PAYG Android devices to £700 iPhone 4S's. No one is forced to buy anything.

I don't get it. The article clearly points out that it costs more for Samsung to produce pen tile than RGB. Wouldn't it be easier to sell the cheaper RGB to the "sheep?"

But they won't. Because Samsung wants quality and wants to do what is best... The screen will still be S-AMOLED and 720p with an even sharper-looking pentile screen. It'll still look beautiful.

Dude get the hell out of here.
If you want to give your money to samsung and get a garbage phone like this in return then go ahead and buy it.
I won't buy it though because is not worth it.
i will not find any reasons to support this device because im am not a Samsung fanboy either.

No, it basically means that Samsung, like any other manufacturer, has had to weigh up the pros and cons of using certain tech in their products and make a decision and go with it. I really REALLY *REALLY* hope some people finally take note and realise this and hopefully we can put an end to the constant, petty, irritating "bashing" that goes on. Sadly, I'm not holding out much hope of such a mature response...

Interesting article.
18months is too less. A fully unlocked $600 smartphone should atleast sustain for 5yrs.
