Samsung might have broken smartphone sales record, outsold Apple iPhones by 20 million in Q2?

0. phoneArena 17 Jul 2012, 02:09 posted on

Samsung might turn out to be the big winner in the second quarter of 2012, selling much more smartphones than Apple and beating Nokia in feature phone sales by an even wider margin…

Do you realize that an analyst is a person and fact is a thing? Therefore they can't never be the same.
I guess what you wanted to say, is "this is a prediction done by an analyst and not a fact" or "this is an estimation and not a fact", but you sentence is just confusing...

Taco, it will be a fact, you deluded relic, still living in 2011.
And in q3, prepare for another shock when numbers reach about 55-60
millions for Samsung and 23-25m for Apple.

Wanna bet with me on that one?

There are always going to be ifans - that's a given, so they should always have a good base of sales...

But the real point here is that Apple fails to innovate, it's a hardware seller - in order to make money it has to shift handsets - and how does it do this? By drip-feeding basic features so that they don't give you too much too soon... I mean how many iterations have there been now - and still the same old restrictions, can't use your own mp3s for ringtones, no drag and drop, zero customisation, etc. etc. really?!?! in 2012??!? I just don't know how long they can drag it out...

Wheras Sammy is throwing the kitchen sink in every model... you know if you get a GS3 it'll easily last 2 years (length of a contract these days) and you know that you're not suddenly going to get borked by the manufacturer "sorry no Siri for people with last year's model" or "sorry, it can't do a, b, c - you need to get the 'S' version for that..."

It's a real shame as if Apple changed its model and maybe started creating a RANGE of phones (top end, middle, etc.) - it could really shine with a flagship model and then attack the mid-range...

Until then... they're a shower of pretentious sh1te... ;)

i'm not disagreeing with you on apple's innovation
i am just a little confused about the gs3
because when it first came out i rememeber eveyrone being like
its great...but it isn't really anything mind blowing
but whenever apple comes up everyone treats it like it has completely revolutionized the smartphone market

and really, i don't think android has any room to talk about getting features
apple is way ahead of android on making sure that every model gets most of the features on launch day, okay, launch day
not in six months, not sometime in the next year
it hits every device when it launches

samsung does not throw the kitechen sink into every model
hence the idea of a range

how many iterations have their been of android? go read the verge's visual history of android
jelly bean is the first one to address lag
okay, the first update to actually really address lag
how old is android?
the iphone 4 does not have problems with stuttering, framerate or lag

they both have issues and they both have strengths
but your argument is irrational and now i realize i am stupid for even bothering to comment

Hey you're not stupid, it's a good case you make...

It really is all about interpretation...

I don't think the GS3 has revolutionised the mobile industry... but I do think Android has set the standard in terms of features (notice I didn't say performance)...

I DO think however that the GS2 revolutionised the mobile industry... in so far as - it was leaps and bounds ahead of all Android phones... and it certainly gave the iPhone a run for its money... and it also showed just how far you can leap in one iteration...

Software fragmentation is definitely an issue with Android - but that's because they are on HUNDREDS of handsets - Apple has just the one.

Sammy does throw the kitchen sink into their flagship models (obviously not all) - just look at 2012's Android line up - HTC and Sony taking away features like micro SD - Sammy keeping it, and beefing it all up... Sony isn't even in the quad-core phase yet...

As for stuttering / lag - I'd say it was 80% eliminated with the GS2, it's not perfect by any means... but this year's models have pretty much eliminated that totally... and if you weigh that against the power of Android and customisation tools - it shows just how far it's come and how powerful it is.

iOS is smooth because it allows you to do nothing. Which to me says Apple's tech is unable to cope with basic customisation features (such as having your own MP3 ringtones, moving folders to where you want them, choosing how many items in a folder, etc. - even having a scrollable bar at the bottom to put more than 6 shortcuts on it)

I have an iPad 3 - first thing I did was jailbreak it - so much more control - but still way behind Android... are you telling me Apple's interface is that fragile that it will slow / crash by allowing you to scroll through links on the bottom row, or add as many apps in a folder as you like, so you don't have multiple folders of the same kind of thing? Really? Or just position folders where you like? Or maybe just give me the power to turn down security so I don't have to enter my password just for downloading a free app or game? What I object to is being treated like a child when I've just spent hundreds of pounds on a product - and not being given the option to customise it how I see fit...

Until Apple open up a bit, they're going to continue to lose traction...

you make good points
but the thing is
only android power users are going to care about those features
maybe just all my friends with their smartphones are different and i have a magically skewed sample
but i think apple will be okay because most people don't really care about the need for intense customization
your main point is you don't like apple because you cannot organize the folders
so the difference between nothing and anything is folders?

You've obviously missed my point...

I'm not talking about 'heavy' customisation - I'm talking BASIC - your own mp3s for ringtones, apps in folders, DRAG AND DROP files into it, allowing all types of video and music to play, changing security levels on your own device...

Really basic stuff like that...

(true story) - we visited family who don't have internet... I brought my Android phone, my other half brought iPad and iPhone... could you tether the iPad / iPhone together to make a mobile hotspot? Of course not, the feature was disabled as that's chargeable... Could you tether iPad to Android? In seconds, no problem...

That's the difference between nothing and anything...

i am pretty sure you can make a mobile hotspot on iphones if you have a hotspot plan
and (true story) i know definately 100% that the verizon ipad 3 has hotspot functionality, the att doesn't, but the verizon one does

draging and dropping files is only one way of managing files
i have never needed to drag and drop anything on my iphone because it is perfectly well organized for me
there is no song or video so important that i need a direct link to it
these are just preferences, not ground breaking os enhancements
you can turn any mp3 into a ringtone if you have garage band, my friends do it all the time for their phones
i do not know anyone who has purchased a ring tone or just stuck with the stock options
all of my iphone users have custom mp3 ringtones
and security is one of the reasons a lot of people choose apple
only power users who are doing stuff to their android would care about lowering the security on their phone

also, apple has had drag and drop app folders for some time now
i don't understand what you are refering to
they are limited to twelve apps, but they have folders

You are trying confusing yourself...

I want to mention that Sony is still retard, iTard group. Today's world, on a device has SD or micro sd is good. I rather have than not having it. I don't have to wait to get home so you sync your device through iTune. Multitask is best option for Android, widget, micro sd, NOT to mention about iPhone has only HOME button. I own many Apple products, iPad, iTouch, iShuffle, iPod classic and iPod nano. Total flaws in iOS and feature for iPad , iPhone and iTouch. Apple could be do a better job than that.

with icloud for most of my stuff i don't have to wait to go home and sync and i don't need to worry about having any data cards
i can just get my music, movies, pictures, and apps
sorry to use the cliche, but it just works
at least for me
i can see how it would not work for everyone though

I have a friend at work who has an iPhone 4. It locks up frequently, has general lag and force closes and at times has him cursing. Not always, but enough to be noticed.

Jelly Bean is the first iteration of Android to specifically address lag, but as I type on my brand new SGSIII, I can tell you that it was already eliminated prior to Jelly Bean. ICS is just plain smoooooooooth.

ICS is an amazing Android version, and the top end devices finally have enough power under the hood to take full advantage of the OS. I am very impressed with it.

If you think about where these sales are coming from and where they are going, this fall is going to be very interesting. The reason is that Samsung has clearly got a winner on its hands with the SGIII. If it does sell that many in Q2 and maintains that same growth for Q3, even with an iPhone5 coming towards the end of that time, competition will be fierce.

it would be a truly epic fall
although i suppose this spring will be interesting with nokia and rim saying they have supposedly amazing phones coming out

OK, BUT LE US WAIT UNTIL THE DATE WHEN IPHONE 5 WILL BE AVAILABLE, AND WE WILL SEE THE NEW IPHONE WHAT WILL HAVE, AND THEN WE CAN ALL TALK ABOUT IT.
BUT I AN SEEING PEOPLES ARE STILL COMPARING THE BRAND NEW SGS 3 WITH IPHONE 4S KNOWING THAT THERE ARE SO MANY NEW TELEPHONES IN THE MARKET, BUT DID YOU NOTICE EVERY NEW PHONE COMPARE DIRECTLY WITH IPHONE, THAT'S MEAN IPHONE IS AND WILL BE ALLWAYS A REFRENCE TELEPHONE

it's not illusion of ifan, i'm trying to say here let's see the next iphone and after that we will see the share of market.
note: i had a windows pc and i love it and i had an iphone, that's mean i'm not 100% apple guy.
