so true its getting old and I hate to say it but Samsung is starting to act like apple.

Samsung is just trying to defend themselves. I don't often see news about Samsung suing other tech companies the way Apple is doing fiercely.

Can't really fault apple for trying to get the royalties they deserved for having their designs copied.
27. THETECHTEAM (Posts: 82; Member since: 12 Dec 2011)
Those design ideas was samsung's it' sad that when they brought those ideas to Apple they didn't patent them COME ON APPLE FANS DO YOUR DANG RESEARCH. APPLE GET IDEAS FROM ANDROID ALL THE TIME BUT DO YIU SEE OTHER COMPANIES SUING LIKE APPLE!! NO!! THEY DIDN'T EXPECT SAMSUNG TO CREEP UP ON THEM! IM SO SICK OF APPLE AND THAT STUPID PATENT STUFF ITS RIDICULOUS!! HOW BOUT GOOGLE AND OTHER ANDROID MAKERS PATENT THEIR IDEAS SO APPLE WONT TRY TO SUE!!! APPLE YOU SUCK AS A COMPANY I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANYMORE OF YOUR PRODUCTS EVER AGAIN!! SAD EXCUSE FOR A COMPANY.

What's legally theirs and what's morally theirs are two entirely separate entities. They're legally entitled to royalties, but they don't "deserve" them. Apple didn't invent scrolling.

ohplease get real! Sammy is defending....its the victim here and the only one who is acting like Apple is Apple itself!
Crappy neitherlands court gives a crappy ruling....Apple cant win in US or UK anymore so hey lets go to neitherlands...next to spain, malta, mauritius basically anywhere to spend time doing patent crap rather than apologising to its customers and making up for the failure of a cheap quality product like the iPhone 5!

Everyone should care because the more patents/cases one company wins, the less innovations the rest can use.
31. Commentator (Posts: 2080; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
...which leads to even more innovations being made.

these 2 need to grow up and stop pointing fingers. everyone is starting to hate them

I'm worried that apple will ask for the patent of all smartphones in near future.
4. phljcnth (Posts: 186; Member since: 30 Apr 2012)
You patent such a thing? Damn, the world is full of selfishness. :(
6. shikhar (Posts: 25; Member since: 14 Aug 2011)
Hurrah!! A new update is on the way for my Galaxy Tab :D
Jokes apart, its going to be a very difficult job for Samsung, considering that they themselves must have a hard time keeping updated with the amount of devices they have released with Android 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. If anything, I think its recommendable to avoid any possible updates for owners of Sammy smartphones/ tablets with those android versions as it may break your device.
22. networkdood (Posts: 5228; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
Nope, not even close to being true - all of my updates I get from XDA - my Captivate is running Jelly Bean 4.2 as we speak.
32. Commentator (Posts: 2080; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
Shikhar obviously forgot that the vast majority of smartphone users regularly flash ROMs from XDA and spend hours tinkering with their phones...

Keep doing so apple. You're going into the history as an embarrassment for the IT world. Users will stays with their choise, independent on apple's attempts to damage other companies reputation. Apple increasing it's dark karma, so much hate in their direction, could not simply flying over.

Cell phone patents should be like pharmaceuticals, after a set amount of years they become null and voided so everyone can use them. The amount of patents issued and in use are insane, it's impossible to make a cell phone without using someone else's patents.
33. Commentator (Posts: 2080; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
All patents are like that, it's just that the number of years it takes to go generic (I think it's around 20 or so) means they will be useless for smartphones by the time they do. Will anyone honestly care about bounce-scrolling in 2025?
11. someones4 (Posts: 608; Member since: 16 Sep 2012)
Why isn't UK as strict as Netherlands? Oh.. and to those who said that they are sick and tired about the patent war... what did you people do? you don't have to defend either company or invent new stuff to beat the competition. all you do after going on with your lives is to sit there and absorb the news. there's nothing tiring about that. meanwhile, those companies have a multi-billion market at stake.
I'M sick and tired of seeing your 'sick and tired' posts

Patent for “scrolling” C’mon seriously?!? Its like a bad joke…From a company that allegedly focuses so hard on driving "innovation", I hardly think a patent for a simple visual feature such as scrolling (which is also 99.9% of the time oblivious to the user) is anywhere close to being innovative!!! Apple is playing mockery of its reputation by fighting over an absolutely petty feature like “animation” in the gallery. What a low this is in the "IT" world..
16. Valdomero (Posts: 116; Member since: 13 Nov 2012)
Since Apple did the patented the rounded-corner rectangular device, I expect anything from them now...
What a shame, "Innovation" according to Apple means killing the competition by any means necessary, including ridiculous patents that already exist in previous devices.
Personally I care less about the animation of the gallery (like you said, most of the time the user is oblivious to this), I just want to see that the photos I shot are stored and have good quality.
These are dark times for the cellphone companies. For us consumers is just a fight between giants, but If you see it in another level, is the end of true innovation.
I believe Nokia has really done very well hardware-wise (R.I.P. Symbian), Microsoft as well with tile-based windows 8 (not my favorite, but is something different), RIM (nothing new compared to current OS, but who knows), Google (Android may not be perfect, but it's so good that became the most used OS in no time), and finally that silver fruit (innovative during their first launch, but then... Siri ...later... one more row of apps... LOL)

Apple focused on innovation? Not even close man

cheap change for samsung.
15. ibap (Posts: 666; Member since: 09 Sep 2009)
They've probably got the fix in the can. But they can't force anyone to update, and unless its packaged with something more important, people probably won't.
23. networkdood (Posts: 5228; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
ibap, this patent case has been rendered pointless as most of those in the World that own a Samsung Android phone have at least 2.1 or better on their phones.
19. Bernoulli (Posts: 1333; Member since: 01 Sep 2012)
This is so ridiculous, Wtf anymore, first Apple with round edges candybar style, hell my Sony Ericsson Walkman from 2004 was that style, now Apple says that they have patented the scrolling through the gallery, I really wouldn't be surprised if some psycho decides to burn down an apple store and/or boycott them
21. networkdood (Posts: 5228; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
So, if you update your samsung phone to eclair or better, then problem solved? Wow, I guess Samsung took care of this issue since 2010 - hollow victory for APPLE.
34. Commentator (Posts: 2080; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
Right? I wonder what Apple paid in legal fees.
24. networkdood (Posts: 5228; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
Ahh, ok, so now I read it differently - what it is saying is that phones running Android OS 2.1-2.3 must receive the update....ah well, my Captivate is safe from the clutches of APPLE....lol
30. parkwaydr (Posts: 572; Member since: 07 Sep 2011)
You guys see the subway commercials with the little kids voice overs? That how I picture a conversation between Apple and Samsung lawyers at this point.I
36. gallitoking (Posts: 4623; Member since: 17 May 2011)
Like I said, Samsung took advantage of its biggest client and copied, and thanks to Apple innovated device the iphone, Samsung is now Android biggest representative, because they followed the Apple way...
37. Rayvelynn (Posts: 123; Member since: 05 Jul 2012)
Ok what I think is funny is Apple goes and puts patents on software running Android 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 Does anyone even use a phone anymore with that
39. kslaughter32296 (Posts: 11; Member since: 12 Aug 2011)
I think it's good, not that they will have to spend a lot of time and money updating, but I like how they will be updating the devices with 2.1 and 2.2 because froyo and the one before it is almost obsolete, and incompatible with just about everything.
40. kslaughter32296 (Posts: 11; Member since: 12 Aug 2011)
It will make alot of their devices better
