Samsung beats out Apple in terms of units shipped during the latest quarter
0. phoneArena 20 Oct 2011, 15:51 posted on
According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung unofficially shipped 20 million units in the third quarter which beat out the 17.1 million copies of the Apple iPhone shipped during the same time; in the June quarter, Apple topped Nokia to become the leader in global smartphone shipments, a title it seems to have lost...

I'm not pro apple at all, but that's kind of expected sense the new iphone was going to be announced at the end of Q3...

OK- Objectively people, I am on AT&T and I am debating the 4S or the Samsung Galaxy S II. Tomorrow is the day I am buying.
I have been in the Mobile industry 6 years, but I am having the hardest time here :( I know the pros and cons of each. I've had the iPhone 4 (so convenient and mindless to use) before and I've had the Captivate (so easy to customize with Android goodness). I'm having a hard time here.
Any Help? Like, say for instances, above and beyond features?

58. GoodFella (Posts: 112; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
I just read it DOES have NFC and it also gets up to 21Mbps Download. Sold on the Galaxy S II!!!

I like android over ios but Iphone retains higher resale value. Iphone 3GS 16GB has similar resale value as Samsung Vibrant 3G (IMO on Ebay).
spec-wise, Vibrant is better than Iphone 4 but the resale value is half of Iphone 4.
Both of them were $199 on 2-year contract.
Later when you want to opt out of your contract, you can sell your iphone and pay the ETF.

Come on!!! Apple had it days. All Apple need to do is 4" inches screen plus new body design... then sure it still be the king of smartphone instead the 2 two years lazy design keep the look the same.
Siri is only work well in the advertise, but I believe Siri is still in the baby step and it is still in the long way to perfection, I don't think it ready for main stream but Apple play catching up to Android that's why they just push it out the market while there are bugs to need to straight out.
3. llcesar (Posts: 2; Member since: 20 Oct 2011)
Yup, it seem that all the new 4S owners didn't realize that they paid to get the new 4S and basically paid to be Siri beta users
24. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@llcesar. So is the A5 chip and the 8mp camera on the ip4s also betas? Goodness, android fanboys are hilarious.
51. llcesar (Posts: 2; Member since: 20 Oct 2011)
Nope.. the chip is outstanding, camera outstanding.. thats why I said that "SIRI" is beta. I only spoke on Siri. They are perfecting Siri for Iphone 5. But for now, consider Iphone 5 users ginea pigs for Siri.
23. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@cncrim. This report does not include the ip4s, so why are you including Siri and the ip4s in your comment as if this report includes the sales figures of ip4s? Typical android fanboy. Just posts whatever without understanding, tsk, tsk, tsk.
40. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
And you bought the iphone because you think android is better? Lol.
31. ardent1 (Posts: 2000; Member since: 16 Apr 2011)
Don't forget battery life. It's a cell phone meaning people need to make phone calls, send texts, etc. and a larger screen will eat into battery life. The good news is better battery technology is around the corner and hopefully the price drops so the new battery can support BOTH 4G and a larger screen when the next generation of the iPhone comes out.

sure, whine now. samsung spanked you. just like I said they would. Apple will have a Q4 boost from the i4s, but will it be enough to over take samsung with the nexusS and SGS2?
If Apple takes it again for Q4, i bet a paycheck to anyone that its only for Q4 and by Q1 2012 Samsung has them by 4 million units minimum.
6. iwebdroidberry7 (Posts: 230; Member since: 17 Jan 2011)
Shipments =/= Sales. Samsung also shipped 6 million Galaxy Tabs, but apparently there are only 6 Honeycomb tablets in the wild period.

25. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@remix. And how many smartphones did Samsung release in the last quarter? You have to realize that the sgs2 among other samsung smartphones released in 2011 was competing with last year's ip4, and that the ip4 was only on 2 carriers here in the US vs all carriers with Samsung smartphones. And the iphone still took 2nd place. That's pretty impressive.
42. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
omg, noone cares.. its OS vs OS. Samsung has sold like 30 million sgs1 and sgs2 phones.. and most of them since the sgs2 was released in the late spring. lik 95% of its smartphone sales were galaxy 1-2 sales. Apple was selling both the 4 and the 3gs. get off your whineyness. ugh.
for months we hear you brag about iphone sales.. now that they slump and lose top spot, its an excuse.
Even I say they MAY get it back for Q4, but they will lose it again by Q1. We will find out when the nexus prime launches as the demand for that seems to be much much higher than the 4s judging by all these polls.
43. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
and as a side note, samsung did not have SGS2 for sale in america during Q3, which is its biggest market. Had they had it for sale in america the divide would be even larger.
49. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Remix you put out a challenge and when I accepted crickets. Let's do something reasonable. Two options. Samsung vs Apple in q1 total smartphone sales. Loser
1. leaves PA forever
2. $200 bet that can be delivered via something like paypal.
You talked smack now back it up.
62. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
you are so on taco.
I'll let you choose your fate.
by Q1 2012, the i4s initial bounce will be over and it will be on its slow downard trend until the i5 gets launched... especially since i5 rumors will start heating up again after christmas.
Samsung will have the SGS2 on every carrier, the Galaxy Nexus on every carrier, and the Note will be out shore to shore. The galaxy HD should be out (nexus with touchwiz). They will also be building up rumors from the Galaxy3.
Choose your fate taco.

Apple vs Samsung total smartphone sales. Loser gets banned.
5. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Great achievement for Samsung. 20 million smartphones is a huge quarter. I expect Apple takes back the lead this quarter with their new line up.
34. ardent1 (Posts: 2000; Member since: 16 Apr 2011)
Apple has adopted a long term strategy, they are wiser from their experience from the WINTEL experience. When Jobs took over Apple during his 2nd tour, Apple had about a 1% market share in PCs. Look at Apple now with something like 10.7% share in Q2 for 2011.
I believe Apple has something like 230 carriers in 105 countries. China will be a HUGE market for Apple.
8. som (Posts: 768; Member since: 10 Nov 2009)
Apple is #2 smartphone vendor not manufacture, Samsung is #1 in both world vendor and manufacture.
9. The_Miz (Posts: 1496; Member since: 06 Apr 2011)
Shipping =/= selling I'm afraid. Samsung can ship as many phones as they want, but what really matters is how many they "sell" to customers. And so far, the record breaking sales of the 4S have said otherwise.
14. Snapdude (Posts: 128; Member since: 27 Aug 2009)
they dont ship more unless they sell whats already been shipped so yes it is accurate
56. Forsaken77 (Posts: 553; Member since: 09 Jun 2011)
They always have more shipped than sold... it's common sense. There are always gonna be models on store shelves or back-rooms waiting to be bought. Those were shipped, but not yet sold. Ya dig?
12. metoyou (Posts: 279; Member since: 19 Oct 2011)
I wonder if 'The_Miz' and 'taco50' related?
21. jove39 (Posts: 1826; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
I am Android user...but to be fair...it makes little sense to compare samsung mobile sales to Apple iPhone sales...instead...just compare...Galaxy S sales with iPhone4 and Galaxy SII with iPhone4s...then we say samsung managed to beat apple on their own turf...just my opinion
27. Whateverman (Posts: 3251; Member since: 17 May 2009)
Well, actually what they are looking at is what manufacture shipped the most smartphones, not which manufacture has the best selling model. If that were the case it would be the iPhone for sure, but the question is who shipped more smartphones, period.
22. gallitoking (Posts: 4718; Member since: 17 May 2011)
I like that this is happening. now we will see the Apple comeback....
26. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
What android fanboys don't realize, or refuse to realize, is that, in the last quarter, there was no ip4s yet. Apple was pretty much competing with newer Samsung devices in the most part of 2011 with last year's ip4. If you include ip4s initial sales of over 4million, that would beat Samsung. Now watch what happens in the 4th qtr reports. Apple will regain the crown once more.
63. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
what iphone people fail to realize is that the GalaxyS2 was not launched in its biggest market, aka America, until Q4. Samsung beat Apple without its flagship product in its prime market.
29. DigitalJedi_X1 (banned) (Posts: 11; Member since: 29 Sep 2011)
You iZombies kill me. Just admit, Apple LOST this round. They may, MAY take next quarter but Apple has two BEASTS to contend with in the SGS2 and Galaxy Nexus against that silly iPhone 4 refresh. So its going to be an interesting fourth quarter. I'm willing to place my money on Samsung for the win.
30. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@digital. We are not denying the fact if ever Samsung did outsell the iphone in the last quarter. Just saying, that there was no new iphone, like there usually is, in summer, which slowed down iphone sales in anticipation of the ip4s. And I'm sorry, but the ip4s already sold over 4million units in a matter of 3-4 days. That's a huge feat to follow, so I would keep it low on the bragging rights if I were you. Oh well, android fanboys have been shameless in making wrong predictions anyways :) What did you android fanboys say again about the ip4s? You guys said it would flop right? Hahahahahahahaha.
32. L3610n (Posts: 47; Member since: 01 Jul 2011)
Nah, I remember alot of Fandroids called it a disappointment. Wait..... Alot of iPhans also called it a disappointment...
Well, I guess if it's something you love, you'd still support it even if it was a disappointment.
Like a underachieving child. He maybe a disappointment but you still love and invest in him. =)
41. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@l3610. Well obviously, the number of iphone users that were disappointed with the ip4s are outnumbered with the number of consumers who think that the ip4s is a worthy upgrade. And also, some iphone users were disappointed that there expected features were not on the ip4s, but it does not necessarily mean that they're disappointed with the ip4s overall.
Stop thinking too much, and just look at the sales figures. It's didn't disappoint at all :)
46. Scuba_Steve (Posts: 79; Member since: 16 Oct 2011)
To be fair, there were tons of people who were waiting on a new iPhone. Apple could have pushed out a worse phone and the sales still would have been amazing. I've said in other comments that I've had customers wait a year for it. I still have customers buying the 4s and they don't know anything about the phone. I also have customers on a daily basis pick up an android phone and ask if it's the iPhone.
What I'm saying is the phone could suck bottom and customers are dumb enough to still get it. It's the name they want not the actual phone.
35. ardent1 (Posts: 2000; Member since: 16 Apr 2011)
Samsung has been adjudicated by several courts around the world that they infringed on Apple's IP. Basically, Samsung is a copyist and if you want to buy phones from a copyist, then go right ahead. Samsung's brand value took a HUGE it and they know it!
36. networkdood (Posts: 6330; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
Yeah, imagine what they would ship if APPLE would stop this non-sense? 50 million....60 million.....?? No wonder APPLE is worried.
44. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@digital. You made it sound like Apple lost money. Never heard of that 22billion loss in related stock. As far as I know, Apple made a hefty profit in the last quarter. 4 million ip4s sold will give Apple huge profits again. And it all goes to Apple, unlike android share that is divided by several OEM's. All you can brag about is market share, because android has multiple OEM's vs iOS that only has Apple. Only android fanboys will say that iOS5 isn't great. That's no surprise. But of you read professional reviews, iOS5 is way advanced than the competition. And how is Apple behind in hardware and software? Do you see any quadcore phones out there. The iphone's retina display still has the highest display resolution out there in th market. IOS is still the most refined and polished OS in the market. So how can iOS be behind? Siri is the most advanced voice recognition assistant. Android is nothing but a cheap alternative for those who cannot afford the iphone. Android is just an iOS rip off. Without iOS, there would be no android :)
47. Scuba_Steve (Posts: 79; Member since: 16 Oct 2011)
Actually without Android there would be no IOS... Android is the first to put out/test software and hardware. Apple then takes what everyone else has done and makes it a little better. If it wasn't for other companies paving the way, apple would have to test everything out themselves and would be putting out a lesser product.
Also the display is nice because it's on such a small screen. knock it up to 4.3 an then really test out the screen. Or, test out super amoled on a 3.5 and see how it compares.
I give credit where it's due but I will love android. My inced2 is more fun than the 4. Yeah I've had a few problems but it's all about preference.
48. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Do you realize the iPhone came before android?
52. Johnny_Mnemonic (Posts: 240; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
Hey taco and who came before iPhone ? Get your info right lol
60. Scuba_Steve (Posts: 79; Member since: 16 Oct 2011)
Taco yes I know. The point I was making was android is not afraid to add new features and truly be creative. While the iPhone is a massive reason why we have smartphones today, you do not see apple being brave or bold, they're being safe. They make a great product yes but for the most part, it's a boring one.
So, the 200 new features iOS5 has, Android has had for a while now. They piggy back off of others and make a more mature version.
So without Android you'd have a lesser product. That is what I mean by "Without android there would be no IOS"
