Samsung Wave 3 stuffs 4" Super AMOLED display and 1.4GHz processor in an aluminum chassis

0. phoneArena 30 Aug 2011, 02:11 posted on

The third high-end Wave boasts a 4" Super AMOLED display with 480x800 pixels, 1.4GHz single-core chipset, and a five megapixel camera with LED flash plus VGA front facing one. Nothing terribly exciting, but decent internals nonetheless, that are wrapped up entirely in an aluminum...

I am kinda disappointed with the design. Nothing new. Nothing innovating. Well, I just have to stick with my S8500 then. I hope that the firmware update rolls out immediately when the trio hits the market.

PS.
The back looks sexy though.

How about buying this phone with bada then ?
Samsung seems to be pushing bada more than Android now, since all of them have metal bodies, and no Android Samsung phone has metal body.
Or what do you think ?

it's not really an option for me on Verizon being that it's a CDMA network and besides i don't know what the appeal is with bada. why do you like it?

Ok, CDMA i have heard of it but it is never used here in europe, whats the difference between CDMA and GSM ?
And why i like bada ?
Well, first bada is a really fast OS. With the 1 Ghz processor on the Samsung Wave s8500 it is really fast and smooth, as you probably know, WP7 is really fast and smooth. Bada is as fast and smooth as WP7. Imagine how fast bada will be with a 1.4 ghz processor !
Bada has a very nice UI. It looks a lot like touchwiz, but has some differences to the better compared to the Android touchwiz.
There is a lot of high quality apps for bada. Now there is only 6100 apps for bada, but in fact about 6000 of them are high quality apps, compared to android where 50-70 % of the android apps are low quality.
So in short words, i like bada because it is fast, has a great UI, and has lots of quality apps.

bah, if you put a case on your phone like most do, then what its made of doesnt make a difference. you are more than likely wrapping it in plastic anyways invalidating the whole "feels sturdier" part.. lol.

maybe its just me because every phone i get has a case and screen protector (im dangerous!). 90% of hard cases are plastics so why even care?

For that reason i care more about weight and thickness more than i do about "materials" since its about to be wrapped in a case anyways.. I guess its just me.

well i don't really want a thick, hard plastic case on my phone. lol. i probably need to at this point though
if i had my way there'd be a fairly thin, snug rubber bumper around the top sliding part and a rubber enclosure on the bottom half on my Droid 3 but good slider cases are a bitch to find. if i don't find something like that soon i'll probably just get a Body Guardz skin for it.

After having let the news sink in a bit, i actually realize something. the specifications on this phone is better than i first thought !!!

I thought i would go trough the specifications here...

First the screen is 4 inch, which according to me is the perfect screen size. the screen is a superamoled. Now, i thouhgt why not a super amoled + ???
My theory is, there has been some complaints on the super amoled + screens on the GS2 that after some usage the superamoled + screens colors had been yellowish and so on. therefore Samsung choose superamoled instead, to be on the safe side.

The processor at 1.4 Ghz is really good. There is no phone in europe with that processor speed. Now, there is phones with 1.2 Ghz dual core which in theory should be faster, but that requires all of the software to be written for dual core, and most likely all of the software is not (at lease not yet). So in practical use, the 1.4 Ghz is at least as fast, if not faster than dual core 1.2 ghz processors.

As for build quality, the phone is made of glass and metal, the best you can get.

And as a extra bonus you get GPS and glonass for more precise navigation : )

What do you guys think ?

4 inch was something i'm waiting for, and a better processor. But what i expect from Wave 3 was Super AMOLED Plus, 1080p recording and playback and better camera. Looks like i should wait for Wave 4 or Galaxy S 3 then...

You know, i think that choosing superamoled wasn't such a bad idea.
Superamoled+ is better, but not by much.
And there has been some problems with the superamoled+ screens turning yellowish after some days of use. Whereas there has not been any problems with the superamoled. And also, Samsung is probably looking to price this phone very cheap, even though it is a high end phone, and choocing the superamoled over the superamoled+ probably saved some costs, but not lowering the user experience.

I to had hoped for a 8 mp camera, but still, the 5 mp camera on the wave is really good. In fact i have both the nokia n8 and the wave (and wave 2) and i can say that the Wave phones camera with 5 mp is as good, if not even better than the Nokia N8 12 Mp camera (no kidding).

I really think you should get the Wave 3, or if you're happy with the wave and wave 2 you have now, wait untill the Wave 4. I really don't think you should get the Galaxy S 3...

Maybe not, Wave 2 does not give me any New toy syndrome at all. This phone isn't a need, but a want. Since it's a want i would only be attracted with specs that attract me. I don't find Wave 3 to have any large difference compared to the previous two Waves. The current stuff that attract new crowd is gonna be 1080p for at least. Super AMOLED have really big pixel due to the Pentile tech, and i already have a Wave 1. And for a want i would really want to spend my cash on new tech like Super AMOLED Plus.

The Galaxy S 2 got the specs, but i just got my Wave 2 for a few months and also using my Dell Venue.

So i be waiting for the next generation of Samsung's high end series instead. No offence for replying like this but your recommendation to me is a little bit too biased. Peace man!

Sorry Peter, I completely disagree with you on Wave's camera quality being on par with N8's. I too am a user of both the S8500 and N8. While the camera UI on Nokia N8 (symbian^3) is pretty ordinary as compared to Bada's, there's no denying the image quality of N8.

Wave is awesome, no doubt, but lets not bring down other smartphones to elevate Wave's status.

I have both too as i said, and yes the camera quality on the N8 is awesome, it has better optics and more MP, however the colors on the N8 camera are not very lifelike. The Wave does a much better job at producing lifelike pictures than the Nokia N8.
And there is no denying that the Wave's video recording is much, much better than the Nokia N8.

its not really high end.. its high end for Bada, but as over all phone specs go, its middle at best. No biggie since bada doesnt need the extra horsepower. Its basically last years captivate wrapped in tin and given a lil over clocking. Not that its a bad phone in the least.

u dont think anyone should buy anything but bada.. lol.

if the SGS3 really has an edge to edge screen and all the other rumored goodies, no phone will stand a chance against it.

Having used the Wave II, having upgraded to the bada 2.0 beta and reviewing this announcement I am having difficulties figuring out the below:

1. What is the point of developing a proprietary system, when with all the new upgrades it is resembling the best sellers (Android and iOS)???

2. What is the point of developing a proprietary system, when with all the new upgrades battery life is getting lower and lower???

3. What is the point of introducing a new flagship to the Wave series with a faster processor when the previous flagships were having no lags at all???

4. What is the point of introducing a new flagship with a faster processor but battery of the same capacity? It is thinner... But...:

5. What is the point of introducing a new flagship with a shorter battery life??? Doesn't a proprietary system give its manufacturer a chance to optimise?

posted on 30 Aug 2011, 07:19

1. The point of developing bada, is so that Samsung has their own OS. In case Google bought motorola (which they have) and start making their own phones (which they likely will). Samsung doesn't want to put all their eggs in one basket.

2. Battery life is really good in the Wave 3, 8.5 hours talk time is not bad.

3. Updating the Wave line, with better and better phones, selling more bada phones, thus increasing market share and profit for samsung.

4. Don't know, probably wants to have thin phone, maybe samsung will come with a bigger battery that's available to buy later.

5. Read above.

Hey! I own a Wave II though i have to say i was pretty disappointed when i found out the specs of Wave III. I heard Samsung saying that it will be one of the most advanced handsets but i just cant see it being on par with the gsII and other dual core handsets. And somehow it looks just like my Wave II albeit slight differences. Not only that, but if one were to compare screenshots of the Wave III to the new Galaxy handsets, you can see the almost similar UI framework, to the point that i even wondereed whether it was bada or android. Not dissing bada or anything cause i kinda prefer it than ios or android. So, somehow i really want bada 2.0 to be able to compete on par with the rest but it is really important for them to differentiate themsleves. Especially the touchwiz thats used in both samsung android and bada handsets.

I think the reason Samsung has similiar UI on both their android and bada phones, is so that in the future when Samsung ditch android (very likely now that google has bought motorola) people recognize the UI in bada and buy bada phones.

As for Wave 3, i think this is really good specifications.

The processor at 1.4 Ghz is really good. There is no phone here in europe with that processor speed. Yeah, I wanted an overhaul of its touchwiz in bada 2.0 to differentiate it from android. And with LG/ Samsung open source OS coming up, i'm not too sure of bada's survival(it being a closed source system like ios) It certainly does have potential, i'd say, but there is certainly a need to make it differentiated in order to compete. From what i see, Samsung is pushing for Android with Bada as a mere sideshow and its pretty sad since i really like Bada than Android or IOS. Just my two cents worth.

Actually i believe that the new LG/samsung OS is very likely to be bada, with improvements. In fact, if you did not know this, bada is open source.

And as for samsung pushing android, i think everyone will see in 1 years time that samsung is going to bush bada more than android, especially after google bought motorola and will be coming up with their own phone.

Latest Trend - Dual Core Processor , Super Amoled Plus & 3D Display , and Full HD recording

Wave III don't have this specs , but it doesn't mean this phone is not good , but personally for me its not worth for an upgrade , having to own Wave I the difference is just minimal only the screen size and the clock speed , my Wave I is still pretty fast !

GS2 would be a good upgrade for me , but with rumors of Samsung's 1280x720 screen resolution , and LG's New IPS Display in the works , and also clock speeds reaching 1.5Ghz , im really hesitant to get a GS2 now , I might as well wait for the next Samsung Flagship with SuperAmoledPlusHD(1280x720) and faster dual-core processors with better GPU
