err, until then the iPhone 5 and the rest of the 720p screens will last longer and be more efficient on the processors pushing the pixels. all for what? a 20% more sharper screen?
36. InspectorGadget80 posted on 23 Oct 2012, 10:42 0 1
u mean the SAME RESOLUTUION no bigger than 620P
23. PhenomFaz posted on 23 Oct 2012, 08:23 5 0
my thoughts exactly but word around the block is that Super LCD3 screens use half the power as LCD2 so the 1080p might not turn out to be a battery hog after all...I dont know about the AMOLED though but Amoleds are very power efficient even now.
Galaxy S4 and Note 3 in all their glory...cant wait for it!

It would be a battery drainer if it implied the following: battery technology does not advance, chipsets remain the same in power efficiency as they are today, and screen technology (other than screen resolution) does not advance.
It's highly unlikely that any of those things will remain the same. They are able to fit larger batteries into smaller headsets (evident by the Droid RAZR MAXX). They are also able to create newer battery technologies that increase efficiency and battery capacity into smaller packages. Take a look, for instance, at hybrid vehicles. A couple of years ago, the batteries for hybrid vehicles were huge. Nowadays, they are able to fit a battery into the vehicle without it really compromising any space or utility.
Actually, the BEST example I can point you towards is the Droid RAZR MAXX vs the Droid RAZR MAXX HD. The HD has the same 3300mAh battery as the regular, but guess what? The HD is rated at 4 hours MORE in talk time. This is because of a combination of a more efficient chipset and new battery technology (lithium ion vs lithium polymer). The Droid RAZR MAXX HD is proof that you can have a bigger, more resolute display and still have great battery life. So, I don't think you should be worried about the new 1080p displays.

Hey Dr. Phil. I thought you were a psychologist not a tech expert.

Only for Japan, but similar models are expected to be sold around the world eventually.

Awesome...but is there anyone working on improving battery life too? I wish to watch complete 1080p movie on my future phone...apart from Motorola (Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD) and now Samsung (N2)...haven't seen any other manufacturer installing beefy batteries!!!
24. phljcnth posted on 23 Oct 2012, 08:32 1 0
+1 for you on that. It could be a hit if these companies will focus on the battery and power-saving departments. Phones nowadays are incredibly smart and I think it's good to complement them with efficient and great power source (like ultrafast-charging or beefier batteries)
Honestly, I don't have issues with screens of 300+ppi. They can really deliver the images and texts very well. Besides, most buyers won't really care much about 100+ppi difference since it's barely noticeable.
And as a fan of the vivid Super AMOLED/HD/+, maybe Samsung could do something to prevent the screen burn-in issue.

Hahahahaha, I swear 1080p is a bit of an overkill for a smartphone (not that I wouldnt want one anyway), but everyones just got to keep up with the trend! :P
First with the larger displays..
Then with the Retina Displays..
Then with the quad cores...
then the fast fps camera shots
Now the 1080p displays..
I wish they focused on cameras more though :c
9. neutralguy posted on 23 Oct 2012, 06:32 2 0
true. When one outed something, everyone follows. Even if it's an overkill or what as long as there's a market for it.
For camera though, everyone's trying, but nokia's still the best. Let's just wait for nokia to create that graphene camera so everyone could follow. Having a killer resolution camera sensor and low light capabilities on a slimmer module would make OEMs drool.
16. darkskoliro posted on 23 Oct 2012, 07:15 2 1
most important is the slim part! but i guess that will take a while because a lens is a lens, and physically shrinking for the same quality will take a lot of R&D.
I want the 8X audio system to be implemented on all future HTC devices though, I dont see a reason why they cant do it.
17. No_Nonsense posted on 23 Oct 2012, 07:32 1 0
Nokia has a patent on a graphene based sensor.
27. neutralguy posted on 23 Oct 2012, 08:59 0 2
we know that. they have a patent, not a product.
18. No_Nonsense posted on 23 Oct 2012, 07:33 1 0
The good point is that you'd be able to see 1080p movies on a 1080p screen.
37. InspectorGadget80 posted on 23 Oct 2012, 10:46 0 0
retina display isn't doesn't even have a HD DISPLAY

30. Joshing4fun posted on 23 Oct 2012, 09:39 0 0
Exactly. I was also thinking about the LG nexus and a few WP8's and just like that they all seem a whole lot less impressive.
In fact, i doubt we will see a 1080p windows phone until Windows 9 or so since WP8 doesn't support this resolution. Silly Microsoft. Guess it's time to go back to android.

Long live these displays!

it's been crap forever. 720P displays been around since 2011
12. Topcat488 posted on 23 Oct 2012, 06:44 1 0
I'll be on board for this and think it'll only be worth it for screens over 5". I'm holding out on that Note II, simply because of the change in ratio from 16:10, which my OG-Note has. I've seen the rumors of the Note 3, this HD screen would fit right in.
13. Scientist posted on 23 Oct 2012, 06:48 2 1
Imagine note 3 with 1080p display and A15 chip.
26. TimTebow posted on 23 Oct 2012, 08:59 2 3
that's what note 2 should have been.
pathetic.
samsung sheep getting as bad as Apple.
14. someones4 posted on 23 Oct 2012, 06:57 1 0
while some people will continually disprove 1080p screens, it also serves to prove that apple will be outpaced very quickly and every other company is more innovative. now, let's see what bluray movies i can enjoy on these phones.
15. jackhammeR posted on 23 Oct 2012, 07:09 5 0
yup...put 1080p screen in a 5 inch phone..very logically

Ahhhh!!! when will apple introduce the "thunder lightning Blaze tornado retina display" with 1080p....Just dreaming......
20. tiara6918 posted on 23 Oct 2012, 07:54 0 0
1080p displays are just the beginning for smartphones, I can't wait for the time that they'll be making a full hd 1080p screen with 3d
21. SleepingOz posted on 23 Oct 2012, 08:04 0 0
2014! I don't like 3D though, unless it's IMAX certified. lol
32. speckledapple posted on 23 Oct 2012, 09:54 0 0
3D may not be much of a fad but i would be skeptical to think that it would be any different on a mobile device. Even something like the Note II, it would not impress me much to see 3D. Projection technology where objects on the screen can be projected above it seems like a more intriguing tech to me.
28. TimTebow posted on 23 Oct 2012, 09:01 1 3
Except Samsung will probably bring in more pentile crap.

I have seen it several times but this article outlines it nicelyhttp://www.cultofmac.com/17370
2/why-retina-isnt-enough-feature/
Apple just calls it retina display for two reasons, to define their display as extraordinary, and to make it so that any display that is "better" seem unnecessary. As someone with better than 20/20 vision, I can tell you that more is still better. not to mention that even someone with less than "perfect" vision will still benefit as explained by this article.
31. speckledapple posted on 23 Oct 2012, 09:52 0 0
Although I think that Full HD screens are a pleasure to see, I do not think they are required for many with a 720p screen to upgrade to. The reason is simple. Although higher HD is always a plus, 720p is still HD so it will look very good on such a small display. Yes, you can stream 1080p to your device or watch 1080p videos on youtube but I do not think its enough to warrant upgrading if you already have the HD screen. Its what I like to call a nice to have thing but thats it.
34. InspectorGadget80 posted on 23 Oct 2012, 10:26 0 0
Apple doesn't know HD their screen will be no high than 620P. every other company will have 720P right now now going into higher resolution to 1080P FULL HD. Apple is still far behind.
