Samsung Gear S2 update goes live with watch face notifications, new apps, and more

Own a Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch? Oh my, would you look at the time – it's time for an OTA update! Fire up that baby right away and a 92MB care package of new apps, functionality additions, and performance improvements should drop right away. Owners of Samsung's warmly regarded wearable shall receive three new apps – World Clock, EPSN, and News Briefing. You'll be getting even more relevant content served to you with a flick of the wrist.

You'll be getting even more relevant content served to you with a flick of the wrist.

Also on Samsung's tab are several watch faces, inspired by the work of renowned Italian designer Alessandro Mendini, who has been collaborating with the company on straps and other accessories for the smartwatch since its release last year. He's famous for designing the yellow tower of the Groninger Museum, among his countless design achievements.

As for the new functionality heading to the Gear S2, we get contact searching, a new screen time out session, and an unread notification indicator inside the the watch face. You can now input emoji with the on-screen keyboard, too, should you find that particularly useful.

Really? My Pebble Time and its ONE WEEK BATTERY LIFE laugh at your Gear S2.

Also, the Pebble Time is the ONLY smartwatch worth buying. If I wanted a premium watch, I'd buy a Longines. If I wanted a fitness tracker, I'd buy a Fitbit. If I wanted something that I'd have to charge EVERYDAY or more, I'd buy another phone, not a non Pebble smartwatch that's trying Way too hard to be a smartphone.

Are you really comparing a Pebble to Gear?
Does it have 4G, wifi,uv, heart rate, apps, tons of faces, able to work with wireless headphones and more?

No.

You trying out compare a fully loaded car with a Yugo.

How can you so called tech needs, be so dumb.

Guess what, a GEO Metro can get 50 miles to a gallon. But barely seats 4 people, the wheels are small, it barely has a radio and it's ugly...much like the Pebble.

The ugliest by far, the most toy-like and the only one which screams that it was designed by a tech company instead of a watch maker. Even the Galaxy Gear S was cooler. It was at least unique in not trying to look like a watch. This looks like a €10 non-descript timepiece you buy from the street.

The Classic is one of the best looking. This is mid pile. But it's certainly nowhere near the ugliest.

LMAOOOO yeah sure... design-wise the Huawei Watch simply pee on this cheap piece of plastic

And, they both pee on square watches. The S2 is not plastic, and in every review its stated that it's premium. And that it has the best, most intuitive UI and method of interacting with it.

Do you live in the same earth we do? It's okay if you don't like Samsung or it's Gear S2. But at least don't talk nonsense.

It's not about whether he likes or dislikes it. It's about his anger that it is pretty universally recognized as the most innovative smartwatch, that it's nearly unanimous that it's a better device than his chosen device. The fact that it's a Samsung drives the anger to rage.

LOL the S2 body is a combination of glass and 316L stainless steel. Some people sure do speak out of their a555es

I was half tempted to buy a Moto 360 today, but held off to review some options from other manufacturers. Ideally I would like to get something that has Android Wear, but I will admit that the gear S2 did look really nice in person. Anyone want to throw in their two cents in as anything comparable to the 360 that they would recommend over Motorola's offering?

Omg 3 more useless apps. So how many is there now 24? I love the looks and I love the UI. But s**t, it only got crap apps and everything is as locked as the apple watch. Samsung I don't want to use your s**t s health app......

Bad and locked down as well. I want to use what ever fitness gear I want. They shouldn't tell me what to use. That is why I love endomondo, it works with a lot and syncs with even more. Endomondo in combo with myfitnesspal is a killer and leaves s health in the dust looking like a toy. I love samsung stuff, but their apple like locking down doesn't look good to me and if they try harder to lock their customers I'm gone. They made their "greatness" because of the openness of android, let's keep it that way.

Shealth best app , most downloaded and loved app.
Excuse Samsung for trying to push their own OS , which by the way is most optimized Watch OS on market, most battery friendly , initiative and smooth.
Get jealous.

Samsung hates how it's tired to Google and has no choice but to use Android and not get a cut of any play store profits, they are trying too hard to get into their own Os game, it's too late and once a Android wear kicks off, Noone will bother looking at whatever os this thing runs.

It's not too late, smartwatches are still in their infancy. And most people don't care what OS is in the watch, so long as the watch looks great and works smoothly and intuitively, and the Gear S2 has those in spades over the competition.

Question, if you can do better, why shouldn't you?

Android Wear sucks. Not saying Tizen is all that much better.

What I can say is, when I bought the original Gear S, it came with Android. It had one day battery-life, no more apps then what anyone else had.

Samsung moved it to Tizen. Gain nearly 2 extra days of battery life, more apps and was simply a cleaner UI.

The new S2 is even cleaner, nice design, big enough and hopefully Samsung can get more app support.

The biggest problem with watches is the apps offer no benefits whatsoever.

But at least the Gear is standalone which no other device can claim.

What are your all saying, the nicest watch is the moto 360 (1st and 2nd gen) and of course the Huawei watch!! :)
Sadly you don't get 3 days of battery in those... :(

The Moto 360 is nice, but not as nice as the S2 Classic. The Huawei watch is about tied for looks with the S2 Classic, but not nearly as functional or easy to use.

Instead you are not locked to samsungs pathetic s health and got tons of apps. I'm fine with not having the rotating bezel and 2 days battery, when I actually can use my smartwatch the way I want.

No way I would use that tons of apps over battery life. I have a smart phone for that.

An update to give it, some pretty basic features? Am I understanding that right? And judging from the comment list, this is a awesome product, so good in fact, that it only sold a paltry sum, compared to the competition. The world must truly appreciate this timepiece. The world of course does love great products! ;) And surely that ugly square "iWatch" (as the ignorant infidels would say it), couldn't have sold many many many times more than this absolute marvel... It's all a lie right!? The marketing is just that great right? lol
