Samsung Galaxy S5 wins our blind camera comparison... again; runner-ups are One (M8) and Xperia Z2
0. phoneArena 19 May 2014, 02:44 posted on
Wow, people do seem to like the Galaxy S5's photos. Once again, Samsung's flagship smartphone has won a blind camera comparison of ours, and with a considerable lead, at that. To be more specific, 753 of the 2477 people who voted liked the S5's images best – that's 30.4%...

It's also the oldest device up there, so I would be surprised if something didn't beat it.
11. BattleBrat (Posts: 1282; Member since: 26 Oct 2011)
It has a Snap 800, making it current gen, put the note 3 up there, it is about as old as the G2, it wont finish last!
17. tech2 (Posts: 3057; Member since: 26 Oct 2012)
Galaxy S4 had beaten G2 in an earlier blind test.
G2 didn't loose because its old, it lost because its bad. Simple as that.
27. Dr.Phil (Posts: 1017; Member since: 14 Feb 2011)
Way to take my comment out of context. I simply stated that I would've been surprised if it had beaten out newer competitors since they were released months after the G2. Normally newer devices bring something new to the table in terms of technology, so it would be a logical conclusion that those newer devices would have a greater chance of outperforming older devices. And it is worth mentioning that it is the oldest device out of the group which could be one of the reasons why it isn't up to par with the latest releases. The same could be said for the iPhone as it was released around the same time as the G2 and also came second to last.
So please refrain from snarl remarks as if you know what I'm talking about. Read and re-read my comments again before assuming I am just some fanboy arguing for a brand. It's all about context and perspective.

G2's camera was never on top places because trying to achieve better
contrast, makes dark and bright areas on photos flat black and white.
Along with not so good stabilisation, even if it is hw, constant refocus in
moving objects (video), no remov. battery and no ext. sd (for Europe that
is), reasons I didn't buy it. Rest is cool.
LG sees no reason why to replace it now with another 5incher and goes to
5,5. Huge for a phone.
Anyways, this photo comparison was very narrow themed.
Greens leaves moving and cement. I 'd like to see people, fabrics,
sea or water, food. Also multiwindow detail comparison.
I voted S5 for the clearer image although it has oversaturated colors and and
contrast is too much. Z2 did better job in these two areas, imho.
But guess what: if someone goes to photo comparison tool in both
PhoneArena and GsmArena, can determine that S4's camera captures
more details than S5's. In PhoneArena's see that the mustache of the little
dog in the center appears as clear lines in S4's but in S5's are dessolved.
Hairs of the cat's ears on the dog's left, in S5's are blurry and dissolved.
Eyes are more clear shaped in S4's photo etc.
Now compare S4's 13mpx datail and Z2's 20mpx!

NEVER ON THE TOP LISTS? BUT YOU CAN'T DENY ITS ONE OF THE BEST!

Tha most hated 4mp got more votes than the "more mp cameras" of spny apple and lg?lol this is the funny side of this blind test...i really love to see the faces of those ultrapixels haters after reading this article..hahaha
75. Whateverman (Posts: 3237; Member since: 17 May 2009)
No doubt, the One takes fantastic photos. But I think the nicebiggest problem is the inconsistency in the indoor and low light photos. With those types of shots, the One would struggle a bit but I'm hoping the One M8 well contact that. Even so, there is still the public perception that more MP is better. HTC is losing money trying to prove that the MP don't matter. They have what is arguably the best phone on the market, but many won't give it achance because all they hear is 4 MEGApixel. And how many sore reps are gonna take the time to explain the difference when it's so much easier to point customers to a familiar 8 megapixle or higher device? HTC needs to just give the consumer what theywant for now and change minds after the red ink stops.

Relax dude. It's not all that serious.
114. LGisgood (Posts: 828; Member since: 23 Jun 2012)
THIS POLL IS A BIG JOKE!
Z2 HAS BETTER CAMERA QUALITY THAN HTC M8 OR GALAXY S5!
IM AN LG G2 USER AND G2 IS BETTER THAN IPHONE5S OR HTC M8! IN OVERALL CAMERA TESTING /COMPARISON.
125. amats69 (Posts: 1238; Member since: 12 Nov 2012)
LMAO.. relax dude...this is a blind test..no one knows what phone used on every picture..the readers here voted the best pic for them and it turns out that m8 makes it on second place..whats with the Caps lock? Cant accept that you voted the M8? LoL .... A butthurt fanboy like you makes this PA blind test more interesting.hahahaha
122. StraightEdgeNexus (Posts: 3683; Member since: 14 Feb 2014)
NoFanboy huh LMAO, HTC is proud of you.
77. akki20892 (Posts: 3798; Member since: 04 Feb 2013)
Guess what. How the hell Z2 is behind M8.
112. LGisgood (Posts: 828; Member since: 23 Jun 2012)
THIS IS JUST FOR FUN!
IM AN LG FAN BUT I DO BELIEVE XPERIA Z2 HAS BETTER CAMERA QUALITY THAN S5, OR HTC M8!
AS FOR LG G2 IT HAS BETTER CAMERA THAN HTC M8 OR IPHONE5'S.
OFCOURSE THIS POLL IS BASED FROM INDIVIDUAL'S EYES BASING FROM THOSE PHOTOS ONLY ! THEY ARE NOT EXPERTS TO EXAMINE EVERY ANGLES AND DETAILS.

Dude putting everything in caps doesn't help your situation, it's just a camera comparison not a life altering event. And stop posting this everywhere you're filling up the comment section. :P

Can you imagine if Sammy had put OIS into the GS5? There would be nothing better to come along in a very long time, except maybe the Note4.
22. enthasuium (Posts: 121; Member since: 21 Nov 2013)
no OIS = slimmer phone
OIS = Bulky phone like lumia
67. steedsofwar (unregistered)
errr... The LGG2 isn't bulky. It has OIS.
69. tedkord (Posts: 7569; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
It also came in dead last behind phones with no OIS.
73. steedsofwar (unregistered)
Umm... We can all see that. How is this relevant to the bulk of a phone? It isn't.
78. akki20892 (Posts: 3798; Member since: 04 Feb 2013)
But Nokia has different OIS technology.
68. tedkord (Posts: 7569; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
Phones are too thin these days anyway. Bulk it up a little for OIS, and add some more battery with the left over space. Sold.
106. -box- (Posts: 3977; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
...except every PureView Lumia.. 920, 925, 928, Icon, 1020, 1520... My wife has a S5, and it's very very good in the camera department, but its higher megapixels don't quite match my Lumia 925.
7. mayur007 (Posts: 517; Member since: 10 Apr 2012)
up galaxy s5 is overall a allrounder and also packed with the best camera.
I still dont believe that in last blind camera 5s won which wasnt worthy at all ..
After that all ifans bragged...
Its a best camera phone...
5s?? lol best camera phone never ...
10. BattleBrat (Posts: 1282; Member since: 26 Oct 2011)
Actually the S5 won the last comparison as well, the 5s won the comparison before that. The LG G2 was DEAD last in the last comparison as well :-)
14. pwnarena (Posts: 1047; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
so g2 is the only consistent device in these tests? haha
i really expected g2's camera to be better than how it is being ranked in these tests.
it was even touted as better than the xz1's before.
well, we just have to realize that these blind tests are not scientific and they only reflect the preferences of most people. in some cases, there are attempts to vote fanboyishly but maybe that's not enough to skew the results.
the m8 is 2nd. surprise surprise
15. BattleBrat (Posts: 1282; Member since: 26 Oct 2011)
I feel the blind tests are the most accurate, no mp's no sensor sizes or OIS touting, just comparison of the results. It is a blind test, you cannot vote fanboyishly if you dont know which phone is what
29. mayur007 (Posts: 517; Member since: 10 Apr 2012)
i also agree ..
blind test are good but pa should reduce the page loading time
its too heavy to load
31. Sid91 (unregistered)
Spot on comment, On a professional basis people check for color accuracy, noise etc. but an average person just wants good looking pics that are bright, vibrant and overall eye catching and s5 does just that.
70. tedkord (Posts: 7569; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
You can, and I'm betting people do. They try to figure out which is which from visual cuts and vote for their phone, not which is best. Not all people, mind you, or even most. But I guarantee some did.
93. Supraman21 (Posts: 207; Member since: 09 Jun 2010)
Do you absolutely despise the G2 or something? Cause it was the best phone last year hands down. Period.
104. BattleBrat (Posts: 1282; Member since: 26 Oct 2011)
Yep, it is a meh cheap creaky plastic brick in a sea of them. Samsung isnt much better but sammy brings epic battery life (note 3, S5) a great camera (S5) Sammy is Trying, Lg? Not so much, that and the G2 had a non removable battery and no Sd slot? The HTC One got HAMMERED for not having a removable battery and SD card, despite its epic design and build. they've since added the sd card. But HTC eats it for not having SD and LG gets a pass for their cheap creaky plastic brick with a meh screen subpar camera no Sd slot?!? I DONT THINK SO! Praise is to be earned, not given! Ive used the LG G2 (recently!)and it was meh at best another LG plastic brick like the LG bricks before it. I wanted to like the G flex but LG gimped it, at least Sammy gave the galaxy round Note 3 specs. I am hopeful for the G3, the design looks solid, im hopeful for the flex 2 as well
55. StraightEdgeNexus (Posts: 3683; Member since: 14 Feb 2014)
yes my vote was right. Phone 5 was simply best.
107. -box- (Posts: 3977; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
For future tests there needs to be a ranking system, e.g. Folks would rank their favorite photo #1, then least favorite the lowest #, and see how they rank that way.
116. SemperFiV12 (Posts: 936; Member since: 09 Nov 2010)
EXACTLY! This is a far better way to analyze the data.
9. pwnarena (Posts: 1047; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
goes to show how people prefer punchier colors. just as expected.
low light settings next, please.
these blind tests are fun :D
12. 0xFFFF (Posts: 3806; Member since: 16 Apr 2014)
There are only two winners allowed on PhoneArena: Samsung and Apple.
18. tech2 (Posts: 3057; Member since: 26 Oct 2012)
HAHA....Typical sore loser !
P.S.: Its not PA who chose winners. Its the audience so when you're blaming PA (for your insecurity) you are actually blaming everyone else including you. Kinda like mad person who calls the world mad ;)
20. 0xFFFF (Posts: 3806; Member since: 16 Apr 2014)
You actually don't know who chose the winners. It's not like it was an open vote. And based on the divergent results of similar blind tests on other sites, one really has to wonder.
The S5 can capture a lot of detail when the lighting is good. The colors are often punchy and fake. Focus speed is good for a phone. Otherwise the camera is unremarkable, especially in low light/indoors.
24. Jason2k13 (Posts: 914; Member since: 28 Mar 2013)
so what your saying is, if your brand won the blind test, its not bias?
34. 0xFFFF (Posts: 3806; Member since: 16 Apr 2014)
I really don't have a "brand" when it comes to phone cameras.
As I've posted MANY times before, I usually recommend someone get a small camera like a Sony RX100 if they want something that is easy to carry around and delivers excellent image quality.
Having had a few Samsung phones and tablets, in my experience, there is nothing remarkable about their cameras. They are not bad, but neither are they great cameras either.
As Samsung spends billions on advertising, that is a lot of influence over a press that is dependent on this ad revenue for survival. How much these billions influence camera tests is hard to say. But to deny the existence of influence is disingenuous.
123. sniperdroid (Posts: 146; Member since: 23 May 2013)
If you keep doubting everything you're never going to believe in anything. It's a blind test we voted not PA.
42. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
his brand has lost (as always), and now he's coming up with conspiracy theories, get the h*ll outa here
82. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
why do you comment and then like your comment from the other account lmao. I wish I did. I would make a funeral for Nokia.
124. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
Yes, I noticed, Spammy nokia/sony accounts.
49. T.Law (Posts: 405; Member since: 10 May 2014)
Just because the brands you hate won doesn't mean that PA is biased. That would be you actually.
13. SemperFiV12 (Posts: 936; Member since: 09 Nov 2010)
Still no Lumia handsets... Pathetic. How is this even credible journalism. At least write about the process, why you choose those specific phones, shots...
19. dratomic (Posts: 483; Member since: 09 Oct 2013)
why would you bother compare best with others. it makes no sense. lumias have the best cameras. i think pa did the right thing not including them.
