Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: first look

0. phoneArena 24 Feb 2014, 21:04 posted on

Samsung, you've done it again! You've managed to once again wow the crowds with a new, premium Android device, and we're glad that we had the opportunity to take it for a spin here at MWC. The device we're talking about is, of course, the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S5. Without a doubt, we're dealing with a handset that will grab the attention of anyone looking for a high-end, no-compromise Android smartphone. What we're also sure about, however, that Samsung's competitors won't just give up without a fight. In fact, the Galaxy S5 will be racing against a number of other top-notch handsets, one of them being the LG G2...

It's subjective. I agree with you however. The S5 honestly doesn't stand out from the S4 in my eyes. The G2 is thinner on bezel and sharper without the dumb perforated style back plate.

I'm feeling exactly the same. This only leaves HTC to announce their contender. I'm not holding my breath if I'm honest. I have a feeling that I'm gonna incline towards the next nexus. Purely for software reasons. I'm already running AOSP 4.4 Kitkat on my G" and blown away by the responsiveness and smoothness. The G2 has an awesome battery and camera. I hope the next Nexus will do the same.

Samsung is falling into a similar "refinement" cycle like Apple. But many consumers will still eat it up on name brand only. That's just the way it is.

I will love to see how the G3 goes, considering how anemic of an upgrade the S5 is over the G2 (And in some regards, it is a downgrade from it). Also interested to see how the new HTC phone goes, it may actually be better than Samsung's this year.

Hard to compared a 2014 model to a 2013 model for sure. It's impossible to speculate what the G3 will actually be from a hardware stand point. But with that said, LG has a track record of over specing their phones.

I simply hope they stop trying to throw too much software at the end user and make it leaner and meaner.

Snapdragon 801 vs 800, 16mp vs 13mp, fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor vs none, ip67 certificate vs none, fastest download speeds and fastest camera on a phone vs nottt, plastic yet premium phone(not my words, almost every reviewer's words) vs shiny plastic( the same one you thought you hated on the S4), touchwiz vs cheap copy of the touchwiz. YETTT, you pick the G2 over the S5. This what I can call a blind sheep. Choosing Z2, the Next One, or the coming G3 would definitely sound reasonable, but picking up a 6 months old G2 over this shows how much butthurt you trolls are.
LIKE IT OR NOT, majority of the reviews are giving props for everything Samsung did(except for the memory) and there is nothing you can change about it.

G2 is also significantly cheaper, has a better quality screen and slightly larger, is a smaller device, has optical image stabilization, and has 16gb of more memory built it as well as 200 extra mah on the better. The S5 isn't clearly better like you would say.

posted on 24 Feb 2014, 22:05 2

14. maherk (Posts: 3803; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)

Cheaper? Maybe because it is 6 months old, maybe?
Better quality screen? Last time I checked the Note 3 had the best Screen in the android market according to Display Mate, and Samsung has implemented the same technology in the S5.
Both have image stabilization, still I feel sorry for you for jumping all the improvements the S5 has in the camera department to focus on this matter.
16 gb more? The S5 is coming in both flavors, 16 amd 32 gb, and guess what, for another 12$ you can pick any 16 gb sd card and call it a day, something your precious G2 can't.
200 extra mah doesn't mean it's much better, the z1 has an average battery life despite having a 3000 mah. Its all about optimization, and Samsung has done a great job in the Note 3 and am sure they ll use that to their own benefit in the S5.

fyi, a used G2 is sold on Craigslist for as much as the 5 months older used S4 is selling for, and sometimes even for less. Just shows how much people are "loving" the S4 knock off aka the G2.

S4 knock off? Your fanboy is showing. There are quite a few differences. The S4 is a great phone, but the G2 is as well and is certainly not a knock off, with innovative features like knock on (heh) and the button positioning, allowing for a thinner bezel on the sides. Samsung isn't the only company with innovations you know.

A fanboy wouldn't have bought the Lg 2x, Lg 4x, Lg G2, Sony Xperia S, Sony Xperia Arc S, Motorola Razr, iPhone 2g, iPhone 3gs, iPhone 4s, and Nokia N8. I am a tech fanatic, I always try to go get the best, and when I don't get what I paid for I speak out my mind. Samsung isn't perfect, but they are the closest to paying me my money back with the offerings I get from their phones. I have the Note 3, I won't upgrade to the S5 because I don't see the need to it, but if I still had an S4, I wouldn't think about upgrading it twice.

Even if the S5 is waterproof, that half year old LG G2 Looks better than the S5, IMO even with the glossy plastic shine. And Samsung must be "NUTS" to only put 16GB with only 8GB free. SamApple will just have to learn the hard way, when people leave this device on the shelf. Everybody knows by now not to buy the 1st variant anyway, but wait for the Snapdragon 805 edition to come, next month. XD

Magical aura had me scoffing too.

This site has a click bait writing style in many ways. They posted T-Mobile's 4Q results without mentioning T-Mobile lost $20 million. Then in response to comment, they simply claimed they posted from the source of T-Mobile.

Every other credible site put T-Mobile's loss in the HEADLINE of their article. Then we read "aura" when describing a product that actually has very little discernible difference from it's predecessor in overall style outside of a back plate.

Maybe they will re-write the S4 review and give it an "aura".

Samsung has done nothing this year.
1) The bezels of the phone remained the same.
2) The RAM remained the same.
3) The design became more ugly. What an awful back cover.
4) I think that nobody under 60 years old cares about measuring his heartbeat with a smartphone. This is ridiculous.

On the other hand , LG :
1) Minimized the bezels in an amazing way. This is innovation!
2) Put the hard keys back which is more convenient.
3) Provided an excellent battery life.
4) Gave us 3GB of Ram.
5) Offered us the double tap option.
6) Always giving us the best roms with no lags.

The author of Phone Arena is trying desperately to tell us that S5 is something new.No it is not. It's a bigger in size S4 with uglier back cover. People who gonna buy it are identical to those who buy iphone because Apple told them that the human finger cannot handle easily larger screens...

Am happy with my LG G2, not worth the cost for as I see a minor upgrade. Just don't like how slow the G2 camera focus is, my G3 was much faster to focus. Think I'll wait another year to upgrade. No real advantage right now!

It's hard to innovate.

Apple and Samsung are honestly in a pattern of refinement. And it's hard to simply revolutionize. The vast majority or people who will end up buying an S5 will likely not give a single damn about its new health features.

People buy on brand and this phone will sell in the 10s of millions no matter how much techies are disappointed it is not over speced. To this day people tell me with conviction the next iPhone will have a holographic keyboard, or a 3d camera, or a larger 4k display. And all I can do is shake my head. It's pointless to argue or get angry.

Phones are made for a mass market and this name brand will sell plenty well to the mass market. All of the window dressing makes little difference.

I disagree with quite a few points in this review, such as not describing the softened in the display technologies used when it's a very valid and important aspect of any mobile device. OLED displays are terribly power hungry when displaying anything but black which makes them a fairly poor choice in terms of battery life. If this were a discussion about televisions, I'd say that OLED is the way to go because of being able to view it at any angle without picture degradation and lower power consumption overall because the parts of the display showing black are turned off completely. But this isn't about televisions, it's about phones. The viewing angle is almost always straight on, the display doesn't spend as much time on as a TV does (check your battery stats. Most people have less than 50% screen on time) and a TV isn't still useful powered on bbut with the display off.

IPS LCD displays offer a great balance between power and visual quality. The backlighting being more powerful means perfect viewing in any lighting, the colors are far more accurate and vibrant, with only black being crushed and washed out. I don't know about you, but the majority of my time with my display on is spent with black only being displayed as a text color on brighter backgrounds. OLED will eat your battery alive, whereas LCD is far more balanced and consistent.

And let's get into the micro SD slot..."The [LG G2] lacks one, which means that there's no way of augmenting its on-board storage capacity."

This is absolutely false. The Korean model has a slot, and all of the other models have USB OTG capabilities enabled at the kernel level right out of the box. I, myself, took a thin plastic case, a USB otg cable, and a USB card reader, gutted the reader and the cable, soldered them together, and used a dremel tool to remove a few layers of plastic from the snap on case to embed the reader and cable internal parts and built a case that adds minimal bulk to the phone while enabling it to have a microSD slot. $13 in materials and ten minutes of work. That's just if you want it to look professional. You could just duct tape an otg cable to a case so all USB peripheral devices are on the back of the phone and plug in anything from USB sticks to keyboard and mouse combos (my favorite is an easel/kickstand case I modified with anther otg cable to plug in my xbox360 controller to play games comfortably.)

I guess my point is that this review doesn't seem objective at all. It feels like it's meant to build up a brand new Samsung phone against the LG flagship that's about to be replaced by its next iteration, via giving wrong information or the ignoring other options entirely.

I'll be more than happy to eat my words if there's a G3 vs SGS5 review if the G3 really makes it to market before the 6 month mark.
