Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One (M8): preliminary comparison

0. phoneArena 25 Mar 2014, 11:12 posted on

If we had to make a list of the most highly anticipated smartphones right now, then the Samsung Galaxy S5 would probably stand right at the very top of it. The handset is expected to sell by the boatloads once it is released in April, landing in the pockets of both loyal Samsung followers and anyone looking for a capable high-end Android device. But the competition is definitely not going to just stand and watch. Samsung's latest and greatest Android phone will have to face a number of tough opponents on its way to commercial success, and one of the toughest among them will be the HTC One (M8)...

I've never been a fan of WP but i must say WP 8.1 seems to have caught up finally.
8.1 should have been WP at launch
Sadly it's not yet released and I don't think ppl care anymore, too little too late MSFT

I don't understand the hype for 930. Had 920 and screen irresponsive in a month. Googling for a solution and found that issue reported by umpteen users without solution. By the way I hated those large bezels, heavy weight and worst windows UI. I hope Nokia will improve their screens this time.

and just think, will ur z2 have updates ? u saw the 2012 flagships are not getting kitkat neither do htc one x !!
and the ui ? htc ui is the worst ever, u need a launcher but still, the notification bar and sttings ui are bad !!
and we didnt talk about the software yet !!!

KitKat and 4.3 has no difference, KitKat was made to run Android smooth on 512 and 1 Gb Ram without lag, then again fault the mid and low powered CPU which struggles to push Android.

Android needs heavy resource of CPU and Gpu to push it's OS

Mid range phones shouldn't really struggle to push the OS anymore. Quad core Cortex A7 CPUs and a decent GPU should handle everything with no problem, except maybe some really intensive games.

That's why on the Exynos S4 with 4x4 A7 struggles and lags, finds it to hard to push and lags operating and doing anything

The Exynos GS4 has 4x A15 and 4x A7. There are a couple things that made the GS4 lag; lack of heterogeneous multi-processing, so switching between the different types of cores was slow and inefficient, and bloated software that ate up the RAM. Now that all of Samsung's major smartphones either have heterogeneous multi-processing CPUs or plain old CPUs with cores of all the same architecture, and run 4.4 KitKat, they should all run fine.

Have you not seen the HTC Advantage program? If you buy from their One lineup (One, One mini, One Max), you're guaranteed 2 years of Android updates, 50 GB of free cloud storage, and a free repair of a broken screen.

Also, HTC's UI is one of the best. It's based on preference, but it's widely more desirable than Touchwiz.

Hello, Have you even used a Galaxy S4 device in your life? I mean personal expericence, not reading in comments and posts. You are telling me that I MUST pay additional to a company, which is so great in making wonderful products, so I can get the normal 2 year support for my 500$ phone? And you find that as an additional benefit from the company? It is making huge profit out of this deal and you got nothing.. My SGS4 is working perfectly fine without any lag and even my iPhone fanboy cousin found it astonishing fast! And on software side the Samsung's flagships are KILLING others! You get all the gestures, air commands, multitasking and the only company which is a real threat in software competition is LG! And the S Health which is the 1st of his kind is not even mentioned! So, please, 1st use the phone which you are typing against, than make some conclusions based on YOUR usage and compare the real things you get. I was HTC fanboy, but when you look not biased on both + and - it is clear who is the winner in S5 vs M8. :)

I really like your joke about Sense UI. Samsung's Touchwiz is stuck on gimgerbread. They are struggling in software part. Btw, One X and One X+ didnt recieved any update because Nvidia dropped the support for those SoC's. HTC can't do anything in this. Get the facts right.

Have you stopped to think that maybe they are listening to the customer? I personally wrote to Samsung and why I switched to Samsung after being a diehard HTC man. I like the option to remove the battery and upgrade memory at will. I also stated that the moment they remove these options, I would leave Samsung and return to another brand.

Also, one of the most crucial arguments given by manufacturers for using all aluminum, is due to being able to make the phones slimmer and lighter. I have yet to see this argument proven. My "Plastic" phone(which most people can't tell because it has a cover on it) still outperforms most devices on the market while maintaining a slimmer and lighter design.

Tech geeks really need to quit smoking the weed. Samsung's numbers prove that miliions upon millions of consumers don't care about tech geek fetishes. We want functionality coupled with flexibility as in augmentation. I'm really surprised that tech enthusiasts wouldn't want the same. They usually like to tinker and modify. In my day, we were the people that disassembled and re-created. Today, it seems all you care about is looks. My 5year old grandson can change is own battery. I get the feeling most "Tech geeks" can't today. Are you guys techs or not? If you're a tech geek, step to the plate and show the world what you are capable of rather than letting the manufacturer limit your abilities.

Why do you parry my information? I never said iphones were the best. And while you weren't specifically claiming that I said that, you are still misunderstanding my post.

I would expect tech geeks to agree with my post; not disagree. In contrast to my post, disagreeing would negate actual tech enthusiasm for being able to improve, modify or tailor a device. HTC has practically left no room for anyone(including techs) to gain the slightest bit of access to anything in it. No customization or modifying at all. Not my idea of a "Premium High End" device.

When you have people who keep buying, you dont have to listen to anyone. Like everyone is saying, the s5 phone is OKAY, but it will STILL sell more than HTC. If samsung keeps hearing that, they will keep making platic and feeding people touchwiz gimmics, and oversaturating the public eyes with Advertisement.

I'm going to get an S5 when it comes out. I don't mind the plastic, just as long as I can remove and swap the battery. Also most people are going to smack a plastic case on their phone and cover the metal anyway, making it plastic.

In reply to the article:

The whole point of having onscreen buttons was that larger screen sizes could be fitted in smaller designs. However, HTC seems to have gone the other way. What is the point of having on-screen buttons if you are going to have a f**king bar below it? It's a total waste. Even if some special function in integrated into the f**king HTC Logo bar, they might as well have put capacitive buttons and save the screen space that will be taken up by onscreen buttons. No wonder HTC keeps failing. They are paying the fruits of not paying attention to small details like this.

I agree. They are putting waay too much importance on speakers for a pocket device. They are sacrificing the whole carry-ability as a mobile device as well as other possible cool features such as screen size within the smaller body.

I'm not gonna buy a phone just because it has sleek metal body and huge stereo speakers.
