Now that 2014 is here, it looks like it's time to start thinking about the next-gen smartphones this year is bound to bring us. Well, if there's anything we feel certain about, that's the fact that Samsung is to release its new flagship Android smartphone, the Galaxy S5, in just a few months...

I need 1200ppi .. that is the ppi where average people will stop dofferentiation between an object and display. but i need 48bit pannel and a full visual spectrum gammut. 178 degree viewing angle with no glow effect and perffect gamma and colour reproduction, 6500k temp. 5000:1 native contrast. with absolite black level.

I thought I saw a guy carrying a box with
next-year's Samsung top-of-the-line
smartphone. I mean, the box had
"Samsung" all over it.
Turns out he was holding a Samsung 22"
I knew it was going to have a bigger
screen, but this would be really, really
hard to fit in a pocket.
43. Zack20 (Posts: 41; Member since: 10 Dec 2013)
Really. WORST attempt at cracking a joke EVER.

I just want Samsung change crappy TouchWiz.

A 2K display is actually a 1080p display. This "rumoured" display is 1440p or 2.667K.
The "K standard" was created by manufacturers of 2160p ("4K") displays, as a way of communicating to consumers the idea that it was 4 times as good as 1080p, by using the horizontal resolution instead of the vertical resolution. A 4K display has 3840 pixels horizontally (almost 4K!). Of course, it *is* 4 times as good; as it has twice the resolution in both directions.
I agree with your statement that a 1440p display is unnecessary at this point. With devices of this size it's difficult to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. It would be great for all high end devices to simply adopt the 1080p standard from now on. However if a 1440p display on a phone would start encouraging manufacturers of TV and laptop displays to start making some higher resolution tech then I'm all for it. 1366x768 seems to be sticking around though, as much as I hate it.

The Galaxy S 4 already has a 2K display and so does the Note 3. But you probably didn't know that?
1920x1080 is consider a 2K display, while 2560x1440 is considered 2K HD.

I think sammy is somewhat good in Battery Tech.

1080p screen is good enough for me, i'm just waiting for the new metal design and camera mostly, and of course a bigger battery.

"The Galaxy S4's 8 MP camera is still among the very best around"
You meant S3's ? S4 have 13 MP camera :o
16. ardent1 (Posts: 2000; Member since: 16 Apr 2011)
Samsung S4 "Active" comes with 8 MP shooter.

My s3's camera still gets the job done anyway. Really hope the S5 will be as durable as my s3

S5 Active? Man, I hope the S5 Zoom won't come.

Buy a SONY Z1/Z1s. I still enjoy my water proof phone
5. pyradark (Posts: 798; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
2K is way to early!! I didnt enjoy watching 1080p on my Z ultra now after I watched 4K Elysium Trailer on it!! can we produced first more 4K content before this 2K stuff to happen, even apps and games still on the 1080p side or worst 720p still!!!
74. HansP (Posts: 21; Member since: 16 Oct 2011)
Technically, apps are screen size sensitive since Android 3, not resolution sensitive. At least, if the dev spent a few minutes using the proper API's. :)

Samsung is going to put up that $hitty Exynos 5 Octa processor in the Asian market version of S5/Note 4, thus denying 4K video recording and LTE.
13. jan25 (Posts: 435; Member since: 26 Feb 2012)
Probably what bugs me the most about the Samsung devices, along with Touchwiz.
10. TediT (Posts: 39; Member since: 03 Sep 2012)
I just want it to be metal not plastic and with a bigger battery and its fine for me me.
11. twens (Posts: 827; Member since: 25 Feb 2012)
How can Sammy fail with the s5? Even if it comes with just a few upgraded internals to match or outshine the note 3 it will be a good phone. The note 3 is sitting up there all high and mighty without anyone coming close to it. So yes the gs5 will definitely be mind blowing.
One thing I hate about Android manufacturers is the screen resolution pump. With all this resolution for a phone to push no matter how much hardware power is under the hood the speed will not be faster than previous models. That is why the iPhone always feels faster than android phones. I believe the resolutions are just too high and take a lot of processing power(gpu). All iPhone games run below 720 p thus making the games way smoother.
it's not just about optimization anymore. Android phones are doing too much work which is not necessary. Leave the screen at 1080p so we can feel the speed in the new hardware.

just test not experience, iphone 5 scored just half of gs4 but game and everything is same, and however ios is smoother

Not a fan of Samsung by any means, but the possibility of a metal device with a 64 bit processor and the 4GB of RAM to actually support it is pretty breathtaking. I just hope they do something about the battery life. If they did I would strongly consider leaving my Motorola and HTC devices behind and switch over to the Samsung Bandwagon.
17. jellmoo (Posts: 788; Member since: 31 Oct 2011)
Honestly, I wish Samsung would move a little bit away from the pure spec race and concentrate on making day to day use better. Their features tend to be on the highly gimmicky side, and the sort of thing that gets used a handful of times and then forgotten about.
I'd much prefer that they work on the core user experience, and bring Touchwiz up to date in regards to aesthetics and overall functionality. It is falling way behind of other OEM skins as well as the competition.
The metal body sounds nice, but isn't quite needed. I think they just have to work at making their plastic approach more attractive. Take a look at Nokia devices, plastic but beautiful. I think Samsung just needs to be not afraid of adding a smidge of thickness to their devices.

Wow interesting spec rumors. Samsung is always pushing the bar higher with numbers and specs which is nice, but hopefully battery life gets the ultimate push in the future.

1440p = automatic PenTile. Which means we'll have those green tints on the screen.
27. tech2 (Posts: 2860; Member since: 26 Oct 2012)
Galaxy S4 was pentile too. But it could produces even higher colour accuracy than LCDs.
They've overcome that problem ever since Galaxy Note 2.

Better CPU, camera, RAM, bla bla bla.... but the battery is still 10 hours life.
29. aybabtu (Posts: 2; Member since: 27 Oct 2013)
What I really would like to see from company that makes household appliances is integrated induction cooker in the next model.
34. hurrycanger (Posts: 1469; Member since: 01 Dec 2013)
no more amoled? That would suck. The amoled display is so much better for the battery/
Not sure how much it can save on a smaller screen like the S5, but it helps saving a whole lot of juice on the Note 3. My sister gets 8 hours or more of screen on time after a full day use (on a single charge, of course). Having an LCD on the same size display would pull that down to about 6 hours...

One thing that needs to seriously be updated is the look of Touchwiz.

this. how comes a multi million dollar company produces an uglier launcher than some hobby developers?

S5 64 bit processor? How original... We haven't seen this technology before... It's going have metal body how innovative...
40. Zack20 (Posts: 41; Member since: 10 Dec 2013)
What "innovation" do you want?
a hand to come out of the screen and slap you if you look away while playing a video?
or the video to pause everytime you blink?
or a 128 bit processor?
or a wooden body? or maybe a body made out of wax?
a 1 TB internal storage?
a 10,000 mAh battery?
ppi of over 1,000?
or a sensor which detects your stink and unlocks the phone?
PLEASE tell me what innovation you'd like in your next smartphone
53. iTechies (Posts: 85; Member since: 28 Dec 2013)
i heard it has a pee and poo scanner that beats the iphone's fingerprint scanner.
54. MobileNico (Posts: 53; Member since: 26 Aug 2012)
64-bit processing, with Google making no foreseeable plans to make Android OS 64-bit? Sounds like Samsung is just throwing numbers around for marketing purposes. The screen and 4 GB of RAM is nice though. If TouchWiz is on it (which it almost certainly is), I want nothing to do with it. Samsung's UI is marred by useless gimmicky features, cartoonish looks, and lag and serious battery drain within 3-6 months of use (The Note 3 is the exception because of a huge battery and 3 GB of RAM). I'd likely only be interested in this if there was a GPe version. Stock KitKat would be amazing on a device like this.

I love innovation, if they come up with something new.. i'll surely buy that phone and if apple comes up with different innovation i'll buy ot too :) why we fight with each other for just phones ? you buy what you like and other buys what he/she like so get your hands on your loving tech and move onn and dont look around and dont show arround :P

Great post, and great way of thinking. Unfortunately, there's a lotta childish, stupid people out there, that think only what they like matters. +1

They should have an option to revert to stock Android.

I seem to be one of the few who want samsung to continue using plastic in their phones. To keep the back removable whilst being resistant to the bending forces when removing it and keeping the weight down it has to be plastic. I love the pleather on the back of my note 3 so would have no problem if they went with that aesthetic on the gs5. What I would say is stop using that chrome finished plastic bezel. It is so cheap it's unreal. You can mark it so easy and the finish rubs off in your pocket. Maybe use a beautiful metal like magnesium or titanium. Giving the amount required it surely wouldn't increase production costs by any meaningful amount.

Everything that I've seen definitely has me intrigued and interested in the S5. The design aspect was the only reason I chose the HTC One over the S5 so if they can deliver in that area, Im sold!

It is strange
It does not have water resistance like xperiaz1?
