Samsung Galaxy S III to have a 4.6" Super AMOLED Plus HD display with 319ppi pixel density
0. phoneArena 28 Mar 2012, 05:10 posted on
Those chatty "supply chain sources" have spilled some info on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III and it will seemingly feature a Super AMOLED Plus HD screen indeed. The SGS III display is confirmed to be 4.6", and sport 1280x720 pixels of resolution, which will peg the pixel density at 319ppi. Most importantly, the "Plus" in the title indicates a regular RGB matrix, not the usual PenTile arrangement Samsung uses in its high-res AMOLED displays...

actually we can't see the difference between pentile and rgb matrix unless you use a microscope. Anyway 4.6 is lot more comfortable than 4.8.
3. bbblader (Posts: 588; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
i think its going to be better for them to use a 4,3'' screen
4. kshell1 (Posts: 1143; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
actually you don't need a microscope, i had an original galaxy s and a epic 4g touch and the pentile of the galaxy s vs the rgb of a epic 4g touch is very noticeable. same resolution much less pixelation even on a 4.5" of the epic 4g touch
6. Dark4o90 (Posts: 205; Member since: 20 Feb 2011)
actually it's not about pentile with the old 480 800 it's about the HD pentile matrix (Nexus) and yes you can't see the difference
7. kshell1 (Posts: 1143; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
with the HD pentile i agree. theres simply to many pixels to see the difference
41. bayusuputra (Posts: 961; Member since: 12 Feb 2012)
i could very much notice the pentile in the Nexus, despite its high resolution.. i just can't go along with pentile.. i rather have the RGB S2 display with 220ppi than the One S.. or even the 300+ ppi on the GNex or Note.. i just dislike pentile..
50. ph00ny (Posts: 1138; Member since: 26 May 2011)
I have the S2 and the Nexus and i still prefer the pentile Nexus. It's noticeably sharper.
In fact i prefer the Note over S2 and it's still noticeably sharper than the S2

Agree with piss bbblader. Above 4.3" is getting obnoxious. Like walking around with a pop tart to your head.
44. LoneShaolin (Posts: 307; Member since: 14 Jan 2012)
Never seen a pop tart bigger than 4.3". Never seen a pop thart that measures 4.3" at all.

I love a bigger screen. My Samsung Galaxy Nexus has the MOST amazing display I have ever held in my hand. BUT, BUT, BUT, I really fell in love with the Samsung Galaxy Note's screen. I am all for bigger screens. The gentle men at the AT&T store had his personal one & he let me play with it as he played with my GNex. I was surprised how nicely it fit in my pocket & how good it felt in my hand. I am telling you know once the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 comes out, I am indeed going to get that phone.
To me the size of the Galaxy Note is perfect & an absolute joy to have. It really & truly felt great, I was so pleasantly surprised. Anything bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Note would be too big, even for me.
I really think the Samsung Galaxy S III's screen will be a marvel, the Super AMOLED+ technology is just supreme. My Samsung Galaxy Nexus' 720p HD screen is so super sexy that I can't imagine what the Super AMOLED+ 720p HD screen will look like!
5. chongbh (Posts: 17; Member since: 28 Mar 2012)
It is still AMOLED with over saturated colours of up to 120% based on NTSC Standards. After using for long period, it will burnt onto the screen causing shadow on the screen.
31. the_s2 (Posts: 238; Member since: 22 Nov 2011)
Not all true except for the burn in part(though it takes a really long time) Also, even LCDs suffer from burn in issues. But who is gonna keep the same phone for more than two years nowadays?
One does not simply criticise the AMOLED unless he is an iFanboy.

SUPER AMOLED screens look fancy and cool but unrealistic. I prefer super LCD2 and IPS.
10. buggerrer (Posts: 306; Member since: 21 Sep 2011)
there is no realistic display, so stop this non-sense about realistic screens!
i would prefer OLED anytime over old LCD tech!
better in battery saving, better contrast, vivid, pefect viewing angles, etc.
18. arcq12 (Posts: 733; Member since: 13 Oct 2011)
LCD and S-LCD2 are different dude. Try to do some research and see for yourself. More people prefers the S-LCD2 than Super AMOLED.
and btw, Super AMOLED consumes triple the power compared to LCDs when displaying white. lol
20. asimo (Posts: 41; Member since: 05 Jan 2012)
My old HTC G2 (which has one of the best slcd screens) has a lot more beautiful and natural rendering than my gnex; You really must compare side by side to understand, although amoled (!=oled btw) has its advantages, i'd prefer a slcd+ips on my Gnex...
23. ngo2dd (Posts: 896; Member since: 08 Jul 2011)
LoL pefect viewing angles. Only if it is not on white background. When OLED are on white background there is always a blue haze on the OLED screen. Battery saving is only if it is on Black background. Learn something about the tech first before you talk.
28. buggerrer (Posts: 306; Member since: 21 Sep 2011)
kid, stop acting smart-ass! any OLED saves more energy than any LCD out there
yeah because of the blacks, and in the sleep mode
u can test that if u have Xperia S and Galaxy S II charge them both to 100% and let them be in sleep mode for 10 hours and see which screen is consuming more battery
so when i say oled saves more battery I'm right, without going on details
30. kshell1 (Posts: 1143; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
buggerrer is right i had a epic 4g touch with its super amoled+ screen and i had to charge it about every 10 hrs with heavy usage
34. ngo2dd (Posts: 896; Member since: 08 Jul 2011)
Go to web browering and see which one consume more battery. You know nothing about the two tech.
LCD has a back-light that is why there is not real back bit at the same time it consume the same amount of energy no matter what color it is on.
AMOLED don't need a back-light because each diole produce the light so when there is black there is no light.
But when the AMOLED has to display white it has to up to 3 time as much power.
Every AMOLED phone has very colorful or black background compare to LCD where they are white. That is because it need the black to conserve battery.
Now if you do a lot of reading on a kindle app or any e-reader app and or web brower then NO the AMOLED will not be save more energy. But you are just watching video or normal use then AMOLED will be better.
Here is a PA article to read if you want to learn the different.
37. kshell1 (Posts: 1143; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
i was playing gta3 -_- for 10hrs straight im pretty sure thats what most people would consider "heavy" usage
42. bayusuputra (Posts: 961; Member since: 12 Feb 2012)
Simple, if you want:
- more neutral colour (although not perfect rendition)
- better battery savings for white display
go for S-LCD or IPS or S-LCD2 (not the old LCD), the S-LCD 2 in the One X is very gorgeous..
if you want:
- More punchy colour
- better battery savings overall (since most app drawers use black background)
- better contrast
- deepest black
go for AMOLED..
personally, i like AMOLED, but prefer S-LCD or IPS for their more neutral colour.. AMOLED is great for photo viewing and video playback, but since i like photography, the saturated colour can be more deceiving than S-LCD.. and i don't like the PenTile arrangement in most AMOLED screens nowadays.. i still prefer the RGB version, even with a lower resolution like the S2.. but there is no "perfect viewing angles yet as of now.. the most is about 170^, and more than that, even AMOLED can get colour shifts sometimes..
grow up boys, there's no point arguing which is better, the two are different, choose what you like and what you need.. sigh..

Good to see the rumor mill kicking up on this bad boy. No, until some assembly and some FCC approvals start rolling in, I will not buy a ton of this gossip. But we are sure of 2 specs:
1) Samsung is going to go all out on the follow up to the most succesful line of devices they have ever had.
2) This thing will be a fun to own, good looking BEAST.

Still can't beat the Xperia S.
Reality > Oversaturated AMOLED
Yes, I tried the GS2, infact I own one and my brother has a Galaxy Nexus.
I would probably get thumbs down because Samsung fanboys can't take the truth.
12. buggerrer (Posts: 306; Member since: 21 Sep 2011)
no, thumbs down for being a blind Sony fan in every article and i believe Sony fanboys are now no different from apple fanboys (iSh33p) !
Sony is too late, and can't compete with Samsung, HTC, Motorola or even LG !
they only sell gimmick to u ppl :)
38. RamyRamz69 (Posts: 390; Member since: 12 Dec 2011)
How am I blind?
1280 X 720 Reality Display with Bravia Engine...
If you compare the XS with the GNexus you are gonna find that XS is better. GNexus has more PPI and has almost the same screen...
Samsung fans are just...
40. buggerrer (Posts: 306; Member since: 21 Sep 2011)
Reality Display? what is this? isn't that a gimmick
its just another LCD with software tweaking thats only work in photos and videos ( Bravia crap engine ) !
Gnexus doesn't have more PPI
anything above 300ppi gonna be the same
if I bring a display with 320ppi and another with 350ppi u will never know which one got more PPI
51. RamyRamz69 (Posts: 390; Member since: 12 Dec 2011)
So if what you are saying is true about the Bravia Engine and PPI; why is the Xperia S Better than the galaxy nexus?(As proved by Pocketnow)
Oh and just so you believe AMOLEd is oversaturated, if you take pics with a GS2 or Gnex(which you don't have both) you're gonna find the colours are so saturated on the screen, and lets say when you upload them on your PC the quality goes down. This doesn't happen with XS.
And by more PPI I meant more than GS3 or whatever its gonna be called.

SONY IS LIKE NO OTHERS
SONY MAKE AND BELIEVE
SONY WHY COMPROMISE
NOTHING CAN TOUCH SONY
54. kshell1 (Posts: 1143; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
yep nothing can definitely touch sony even though it can barely sell its own phones.......
15. SuperAndroidEvo (Posts: 4801; Member since: 15 Apr 2011)
No I am more for the true blacks than anything else. The Super AMOLED technology just can't be beat in the ultimate blacks it produces. If you have ever watched a movie on a Super AMOLED screen you WILL appreciate the black levels more than anything. Watch the Dark Knight on a Super AMOLED screen, it’s really something to behold!
I can make an informed opinion on the matter because I own BOTH the Asus Transformer Prime with its Super IPS Plus display & the Samsung Galaxy Nexus with its 720p Super AMOLED HD display. Both are great don’t get me wrong, but the black levels are unparalleled.
The blacks are a HUGE differentiator!
26. lukesky (Posts: 2; Member since: 28 Mar 2012)
The blacks on a Super AMOLED screen are really black, too bad I can't say the same for the whites which are not pure white unlike a proper LCD.
You should compare the HTC One X's SLCD2 and the Nexus using the same picture at max brightness, the difference is really obvious in terms of sharpness and contrast.
29. buggerrer (Posts: 306; Member since: 21 Sep 2011)
there is no pure white ever! only WhiteMagic displays will produce white
other lcd can't produce pure white
33. SuperAndroidEvo (Posts: 4801; Member since: 15 Apr 2011)
I have never had a problem with whites on a Super AMOLED screen. It's never bothered me like not having those sexy blacks. Also I have yet to see a perfect white on any mobile screen, all whites are not perfect! The blacks on a Super AMOLED screen are as close to perfect as could possibly be though.
Also the HTC One X is not out so how do you even know about that phone?
49. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
blacks cant get any better. the pixel is off on AMOLED which is why it looks so good and gives it infinite contrast. LCD displays the pixel is on, which is why its more of a dark grey than black.
its all preference, but I'll take super amoled + any day of the week.
52. lukesky (Posts: 2; Member since: 28 Mar 2012)
The whites on a LCD might not be perfect, but definitely way better than whites on an AMOLED, that's for sure.
Yes the HTC One X is not out yet, but haven't you heard of review sets? Plus the HTC team is travelling around the world visiting a lot of cities to allow people to try out the phone so I could compare between the screen of the One X vs the Nexus and the One X is definitely better.
32. the_s2 (Posts: 238; Member since: 22 Nov 2011)
You must be kidding right? comparing sony to samsung?
39. RamyRamz69 (Posts: 390; Member since: 12 Dec 2011)
Yeah guess what...Sony innovates, Samsung copies. :)
And well, atleast people who buy Sony products can just be fanboys about something which is truly the best gaming console; PS3.
Samsuck fanboys...they believe their phones are the best because they are spec hungry. Not only that, they think because Samsuck sells more phones than other companies; it's clearly better.
Guess what, Apple sells more phones than Samsuck. I guess it's better if you're in your own world.
14. jamvts (Posts: 14; Member since: 27 Jan 2012)
i really dont want a 16:9 screen it feels so stretched for anything other than movies.
plus i prefer a 4.8" atleast after the galaxy note...
wish they put biggest battery, world band cdma/gsm and infrared sensor
and much less heating back surface with metal housing
16. gowtham.n.mail (Posts: 11; Member since: 11 Mar 2012)
I thought it would have 1080p screen ! Anyway I think we can tell the difference ...
17. sheepygalaxy (Posts: 68; Member since: 10 Mar 2012)

Andro will make a stupid anti apple comment in 3 2 1...
22. SleepingOz (unregistered)
The only stupid comment I see here is yours actually.
You seem to hold a grudge against andro, why? Is he your mom's new BF?
43. andro. (Posts: 1997; Member since: 16 Sep 2011)
Its because I found his true form in comments in a previous article. He trolls continually for apple, but he has on his profile that he owns a galaxy s2 at&t and says its great which means he trolls in general for no particular reason other than for the sake of it which means he is a far worse species of troll than any other out there. Please dont feed this troll.

Nice specs. Too bad I won't ever buy a Samsung phone again. Very SLOW updates and hardly any support equals a horrible experience with my Samsung Epic. Not again will I pay top dollar for an unsupported phone.
36. ironmarc89 (Posts: 52; Member since: 22 Jan 2012)
it can have all these specs but if samsung doesnt release the source code, its gonna be a lagtastic experience with touchwhiz while not rooted. Hopefully touchwiz is VERYVERY light and more trebuchet
