Samsung Galaxy S II arrives at T-Mobile, ready for launch; phone scores 3,711 on Quadrant test

0. phoneArena posted on 06 Oct 2011, 21:55

A picture shows boxes and boxes of the Samsung Galaxy S II arriving at a T-Mobile store in advance of the launch of the device on the nation's fourth largest carrier; unlike the AT&T and Sprint variants of the phone, the T-Mobile model has a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor under the hood...

And people were hating on this phone for NOT having a exynos processor. By all means, I get the same scores as my 1.2ghz compared the 1.5ghz but still really good.

So in the end, a different processor for the much faster data speeds might just have worked out after all.

there's something about these Samsung devices that's fishy...the Amaze uses a very similar processor and it doesn't get scores anywhere near that. from now on i'll be taking these Samsung Quadrant Scores with a grain of salt.

I agreed with you until I saw a video of some Samsung phone that only had a 1.4ghz SINGLE core processor. The web browser experience seemed a lot smoother and more responsive than even some dual core phones. It could handle flash without barely any stutter or lag. It seems like either Samsung actually uses a different web browser on their new touchwiz devices or touchwiz itself has become so light that the device doesnt struggle to keep up like in other UIs.

thats a hummingbird chipset with the EXT4 lagfix running at 1.4ghz. For most operations its as fast or faster than a dual core snapdragon at 1-1.2ghz. I know.. thats what I use :)

Thats a hella quadrant, but I dont believe it . A snapdragon at 1.2ghz gets 2200, a snapdragon at 1.5ghz gets 3700?? If it got 2400-2500 i could believe it.

obviously theres more going on under the hood than just 0.3ghz more and a lil extra ram. Ill play with the store demo when i go back in a day.

well you'd think an OMAP would get similar scores then because they're so similar not to mention the dual-channel RAM...

17. Smart posted on 07 Oct 2011, 00:30

hey remixfa I guess the initial score is even higher(the one at the beginning of the video).....its 3841......I never got that with my 1.2 GHz exynos......
Is it the snapdragon S3 in there?

You have to remember that all those other phones use sense and sense is a very heavy ui and uses a lot of RAM.

15. Thump3rDX17 posted on 07 Oct 2011, 00:03

that's the first thing i thought of but this is over 1000 points we're talking about here.

27. remixfa posted on 07 Oct 2011, 10:25

sense isnt going to make THAT much of a difference. if you wanna give it 100 points for sence, go for it. Its not like all those animations and everything are running in the background while your playing a game. When I benched the store Sensation, i made sure everything that i could turn off.. was turned off.. and i still beat it with my SGS1 at same clock speed. Also, the galaxy is running Touchwiz 4.0. While not as animated as Sense, it isnt stock either.

No, there is some trickery going on here. a 0.3ghz difference in clock speed doesnt do 1/5th of that difference in score.

I shall investigate next time Im at work.

It could be the gpu because the amaze uses the adreno gpu while the samsung phones don't use adreno and use a totally different one (I forget the name though)

29. Thump3rDX17 posted on 07 Oct 2011, 16:06

the T-Mobile Galaxy S II uses a Qualcomm S3 variant therefore Adreno is on board.

Let's wait on real world reports. When the Atrix came out, it was getting higher benchmarks than anything else at the time, but in reality it blowed.

Yeah, all of these phones range from 3100-3800. Depends on when you test, what's running when you test, etc...

i always kill all my tasks and do three tests in a row to get optimal scores.

How come there isn't an unboxing of this phone on any mobile tech websites? Usually they get their hands on a week or so before the launch of a handset.

26. Alantef posted on 07 Oct 2011, 08:52

most of the time they do an unboxing and review around the same time so there isnt a big gap between them...

19. The_Rock posted on 07 Oct 2011, 01:00 1

I'm not to big on benchmarks cuase they can be a little misleading at times, its all about real world performance an usabilty for me, but overall it seems like a good phone for t-mobile users looking for and upgrade or just a new phone.

21. cloud (unregistered) posted on 07 Oct 2011, 02:07

My Epic 4G touch does almost 4700 on quadrant at 1.6ghz.

22. Fools (unregistered) posted on 07 Oct 2011, 02:26

Yawn - another quadrant story. What's more boring is the sheer stupidity behind some comments. Exynos is just too hyped up. GS2 is a great phone but it's quadrant glory is caused by its 2008ish WVGA display resolution. Since you guys are all over it, spend some penny to buy quadrant advanced and try to educate yourself with the breakdown of the score. Snapdragon and Omaps are much more powerful - after all they are developed by two industry leaders. Chip design and fabrication is not Samsung's thing. They are good at other stuff like display, dumb RAM - stuff like that.

not bad samsung looks to be tha best one i finally have something to compare my Senation 4G to... well not quadrant... LOL

25. nanandella (unregistered) posted on 07 Oct 2011, 07:35

I told remixfa and the rest of the exynos fanboy idiots this processor was no joke. If they had half a brain they would know as developers at XDA have said the code with the Sensation was HORRIBLY implemented and therefore underperformed. That's why with other roms AS I STATED in other posts the snapdragon /adreno 220 blows the exynos away. Its easier for morons like remixfa to just say......it sucks.....then to do some research and use his brain. At any rate this just confirms what intelligent informed people already knew. It was never the processor it was bad code on HTC 's part. I will now accept apologys from all you exynos fanboys.

i'd like to see where you get your information please. (:

32. RORYREVOLUTION posted on 07 Oct 2011, 22:39

you mad bro?

seriously shut up dude lol You have to go through the trouble, hassle, and not to mention completely voiding your warranty to root and hack your phone to do that.

While us "exynos fanboys" can enjoy our super smooth and fast processor on full stock without any work to be done.
