Samsung Galaxy S 4 hands-on

0. phoneArena 14 Mar 2013, 18:32 posted on

Taking 2012 by storm, Samsung catapulted all the way to the top last year, as the Korean based company delivered timeless devices over and over again with little pause for its rivals to combat its insatiable appetite. Claiming victory while looking down from the pinnacle of the mountain, Samsung as a whole transformed from being a competitor trying to emerge from a heap of hard rollers, to the one taking ownership of the crown in the smartphone kingdom. Today marks yet another triumphant push forward in retaining that prestigious crown, seeing that the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S IV just became official-official...

Only Blackberry can do a full turn around the way it should be done...even though it took a while it was worth it. Samsung can learn a thing or 2

Samsung isn't in the position to need a "full turn around."

The difference is that a full turn around for Samsung world mean dropping to the bottom of the pack and becoming unprofitable.

No turn around necessary.

One thing Samsung did pretty solid in S4 was it interface & functionality, it was much polish every part and look nicer than S III or Note II.

Just... haizz, the design of the phone was meh...

The phone design make me choice of leaving it....

I'm thinking HTC is about to see their stock prices go up. How could anyone not biased by some stupid loyalty to a company pick this up over the One. You are getting the same performance and features with one packaged in the same old designed with cheap material and one completely redesigned to stand out in premium material. Plastic vs metal, glass...etc, isn't the most important factor but when it is really the only differentiating factor then might as well get the looks to go along with the performance. That said, I'll probably hold off for the Note 3 despite being plastic since it will at least offer an additional hardware feature I use.

From a previous user of S3 and Note2, I would say I wouldn't be wowed by the S4 if I get an upgrade. Most new features for me is disregardable. I would really appreciate a device that actually feels different in hand and attracts some good attention. I think if I do get the S4 at launch and have the phone on the subway on the day of launch people will be like is that a Note2? and the guy next to the person will be like nah.....maybe its just that his hand is too big so that his Note2 looks smaller. In my opionion most people will probably not be available to differentiate it base on first glance.

Just as I suspected. Nothing but a souped up Galaxy S3 with some hardware modifications. So...anyone with a Galaxy S3 doesn't have any immediate reason to upgrade to the S4, unless they're a hardcore tech geek that just HAS to have the latest hardware.

I posted the comment below in the other article for some help on choosing the right device to put my hard earned money on. Seems like this article having more readers

I don't know how to compare s4 to others, let's pick HTC One.
HTC One display is 468ppi pixels density while s4 only 441ppi
HTC One has 2.1m WIDE ANGLE front facing camera while s4 is 2megapixels normal
HTC One has a 4ultrapixel rear camera while s4 is 13megapixels (even ordinary camera busting away from megapixels myth eventually)
HTC One has stereo speaker, (beats audio built-in) while s4 is mono loudspeaker
HTC One has both Optical and digital Image Stabalizer while s4 comes with digital image stabalizer
s4 comes with octa-core chip while HTC One is quard-core snapdragon(but s4 octa-core won't available in every region, in some reagion s4 will come with quard-core snapdragon instead)
HTC One LCD is Scratch-resistant glass and metallic uni-body and splash resistant
s4 with expendable microSD slot
s4 with user replaceable battery

intern of UI: HTC One sense UI + blinkfeed is very impressive
As a gamer and multimedia user, i'll choose HTC One if what s4 spec published here is true, but HTC is really really suck in marketing,
what do you think

All True unless the cameras turn out to be a gimmick
But you fotgot a few things
SGS4 is lighter, thinner, and smaller but has a bigger battery and screen
SGS4 Has gorilla glass 3 not HTC

Blinked is flipbroad, nothin special

I do love the front facing speakers

I know alot of us are upset..but i felt the exact same way when I first saw the GS3...and then once i played with it in the store my thoughts totally changed. It sounds weird but I just think that it doesn't photograph well. The GS3 looks great in person and I'm sure the GS4 will too.

Now for those saying the GS4 is to the GS3 what the iPhone 5 was to the iPhone 4 I totally disagree. For one it it took them 2 years to go from the iPhone 4 to 5 with a phone looking exactly the same in between.

If you look at the Galaxy S phones from 1-4 you can see that Samsung was trying to find a form and style that they could stick with...they struck gold with the S3 so they are going to stick to that design language for a while and modify and refine it as they go along. Actually the S4 fixes the the things i dont like about the S3..more squared of corners, a flat front/back

Also remember that we will have to wait until NEXT YEAR to see any type of design change from the iPhone. Apple would never increase the size and resolution, include a bigger battery and camera, double the processing power, and modify the appearance in one year...they only do that every 2 years

Find me a phone the same size as my S3 but with a faster chip, more ram, better camera, bigger full HD screen, and a micro SD slot for all my sweet FLAC's and I'm sold .......

.... S4 it is then!

I'd rather be listening to ALL my albums than looking at the back of my phone!

A lot of these comments are very biased. People will either say Htc one looks good or gs4 rocks. I like both phones and currently have a gs3. Both are great phones but there not gonna make me trade in my old phone. I can wait til 2014 when my contract ends to get another phone. Probably be something better out by then.

Everyone was hating on the GS3 when it was announced. Then what happened? I rarely see a happy HTC owner. Mark my words, in 6 months nobody will care about the HTC one, but the sIV will still be selling like crazy. Then all of you who were so quick to hate are going to act like you never hated on it.

I owned the S3 and certainly was not happy, not at all especially when it cracked (featured by PA). Changed and got the HOX.......

I love the new and improved design. Next to the S3 it's sleeker with almost edge to edge display, especially on the sides, thinner, nicer texture look to it (to me anyway) full HD screen (only the HTC One has a few more pixels but you won't be able to tell that small difference)..among many other improvements especially on the software side.
Among all other new and upcoming phones, it has IR blaster, faster ram DDr3 versus DDr2, watching a video, look away it pauses, look back at it, continues where you left off. I could go on and on and on and on and on in regards to the features the S4 has. You can have your scratchy and extra breakable glass and aluminum phones cause poly-carbonate is far more durable and less susceptible to breakage. Also has better reception capabilities compared to the others because it's less prone to static in buildings and the like when you're inside. Samsung is ruling the smart phone world once again and will continue to do so. You can have your puny icrap 4 inch screen and inferior specs, I'll take the S4 AND keep my open development, open source, do whatever I want to my phone oh, and Google Now which blows Siri out of the water and then some and some more. AAAAND unlimited data with purchasing my S4 full price (after I sell my S3 of course) hehe. Hurry up sammy and sell me the best smart phone from the best smart phone company ASAP please :)

Ok I'm going to be the Devil's (Samsung's) advocate here.

Design - There are cases for that.

Software - The only UI capable of running 2 full (not mini/qslide) apps on it's own is Nature UX. All the other gimmics do add a lot of value. And you can choose which one's you use. Don't like it don't touch the check box in settings. Basicly Nature is the best UI out there.

Now as for the Xperia Z being IP57, as I've written there are cases for that. The HTC One has better speakers, but there are loads of smallish bluetooth speakers out there.
And you don't need a 93db to talk to your freinds, only for music, only once in a while. But can you put a better screen on the Xperia Z? A 13 mega camera/5 inch screen on the HTC One? No.
