Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 is now official – jumbo-sized Galaxy S III look-alike

Although we had the feeling that it might be unveiled at IFA 2012, the rumored Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 was officially announced today in Korea. And yes, as you might expect given the device's name, what we have on our hands is a jumbo-sized Android-powered gizmo capable of doing most of the things a smartphone can do, with the exception of making calls and sending texts. 

Probably the most significant asset of the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 is its humongous TFT-LCD screen measuring 5.8 inches (14.7cm) in diagonal. However, its qHD resolution (540 by 960 pixels) is nothing to write home about, having the display's size in mind. The player also packs a 2,500mAh battery, VGA front-facing camera, built-in stereo speakers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and 16 or 32 GB of storage that can be expanded with the use of a microSD card. 

On the software side of things, the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich spiced-up with Samsung's very own TouchWiz UI. Interestingly, the company is marketing the player as a device suitable for students as it comes with its Learning Hub, where thousands of textbooks from a number of publishers are available. A list of educational tools, such as a dictionary and clients providing access to virtual lectures, are also available, although something tells us that they will be offered primarily to Korean buyers.

That is pretty much all that we know so far. Perhaps further details about the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 will become known during IFA 2012, where it will most likely be on exhibit. At this time, we have no word as to whether the device will be sold outside of its homeland market.
