Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G2: first look
0. phoneArena 07 Sep 2013, 15:15 posted on
Samsung has just announced its new phablet, the Galaxy Note 3, but LG has also recently unveiled a killer product - the G2, which has already proven to be an amazing smartphone. Seeing that these two devices will soon meet on the market, it was only natural for us to go ahead and produce a quick comparison between them at IFA 2013...

Two thin-bezel monsters, should be an even fight with your choice of usage deciding.

Can we hear your arguments, please?
My arguments about Note 3, are:
1 Best display , ever (no matter what Ray say)
2 Much more beautiful and classy design (no matter what Ray say, and his love to pink color)
3, 4K video
4, 3Gb RAM
7. Swappable battery
9 More sensors

Bleh. Best display ever? If by best you mean big, then sure... However, the over-saturated, burn-in sensitive AMOLED displays on Samsung phones are far, far from best.
The G2 has the same resolution on a smaller screen, meaning it has a higher pixel density. Moreover, the display can put out over 400 nits, perfect for outdoor viewing. Finally, it is IPS meaning that you get better color reproduction, not stupidly "vivid" like the AMOLEDs.
I'll admit that, for some people, the Note 3's screen is better-suited. However, don't you go telling people that it's the best, please. The LAST thing we need is people trying to make objective points about products.
The other stuff you said? Didn't you read the article? "[T]he comfort that you'll get out of having the more compact device shouldn't be understated."
-Different design; subjective.
-4K Video; not practical as most displays aren't 4K. Heck, HDTV still shows at 720p.
-3GB RAM; overkill for Android, but a good thing to have none-the-less.
-Multi-Window; a useful feature.
-S-Pen; potentially useful.
-Swappable Battery + microSD; totally agree that this is better. However the Korean G2 has these features and therefore suffers from a lower capacity. The 3000mAh battery can be afforded thanks to a non-removable back-plate.
Altogether, in addition to saving some money, the G2 is more compact. The 24GB user-accessible memory is more than I, personally, need for a phone. I don't think I'd want to carry around something as big as a Note 3. Preference varies from person to person. Hope you enjoy your Note 3 as much as I enjoy my G2, come October!

no one valid argument in favor of G2, exept that you find the size of Note 3 big for you.
By the way Samsung make the best LSD in the World(ask Apple) , but they put this old tech back. This myth about color accuracy of the new AMOLED is old too.
Korean G2 has these features , but it's bigger device. Check it out. Besides the 3000mAh battery can't replace the swappable battery , Or SD support.
As I said before: G2 is dead the same day Note 3 come on the market(same story like the sealed handicap HTC One)
Enjoy your G2
(I don't believe you'll buy it, though)

Ugh, wow, ignorance at its finest.
First of all, there WERE good arguments in there that I totally agree with, and some that I don't.
Second, yes, Samsung makes the best LSD in the world, and they often have parties at Apple HQ, for sure. I mean, yes, they're suing each other, but Tim Cook always takes a day every week to lick some with Kwon Oh Hyun.
1. Again, screen size. 5.2" is a lot more suitable for most of the people, not everyone is born with giant hands.
2. Pixel density. Seriously, you say it is not a valid point? The G2 has clearly higher density, and thus better to look at from close up (though neither of them are bad to look at from close, don't get me wrong).
3. Screen technology. If you had both of them in your hands, comparing them, you'd know what we're talking about. The G2's IPS panel is a lot more life-like, while the N3's screen oversaturates all the colors. Seriously, every picture I have taken with it during the short test was looking like if they were taken in Wonderland - too vivid. But put it on a bigger, more lifelike screen, and bam, they're regular. Yes, sure, it is awesome, I like AMOLED for many features, but it is not the saturation of colors, for sure. On a phone I want something that's lifelike. Leave the vividness to TVs.
Oh and just a sidenote: the Korean G2 is NOT bigger. It is the exact same size, although a bit thicker (I wouldn't call 0.2mm bigger, it can be barely seen or felt).
The G2 won't be dead, as it has a lot wider user group target with the smaller screen. If Samsung was to put the Note 3 into a smaller case, in the 4.7-5.2" category, I believe a lot more would consider buying it, but nope, it is not going to happen, so no, it will not have as much success as the G2 (relatively speaking. The G2 has a lot more devices in its own category to compete with, while the Note 3 is a loner for now).
Also, please, let people have personal opinion, Samsung fanboy. You coming here and bashing on everything else, with false facts, is not helping the user who wants to decide between these two phones.

I'm getting kind of tired of "tech authors" like this trying to force their own ideology of what they think constitutes a "good looking" phone. Not all of us think aluminum is a premium material, especially based on how the iPhone 5 and HTC One handle in real life scenarios. And not all of us like the way the HTC One or iPhone look. I personally find both of them aesthetically unappealing. As these are subjective points of views, professional reviewers should be more objective.
7. izim1 (Posts: 62; Member since: 04 Feb 2013)
Lol take a deep breath, fella. It's not that a big of a deal. Besides, no one is trying to force anything on you. You're free to like what you like. And when you write your own reviews you can put in your own point of view. That being said, "premium", when it comes to tech, means "fancy looking" and worth the price of admission. Aluminum, carbon fiber, Kevlar and even pleather like what's on the note 3, or any plastic made to look and somewhat feel like any of these, would be considered "premium" and "good looking". Regular run of the mill made in China by children shiny plastic, wether you prefer it or not, does not qualify for the "premium" or "good looking" tag.
16. JMartin22 (Posts: 391; Member since: 30 Apr 2013)
What are you talking about, blabbering a bunch of stuff that's irrespective to my gripe about tech reviewers not being able to objectively analyze has nothing to do with a lot of what you said.
"Premium" should constitute how durable, ergonomic and rugged the device is. Everyone likes a certain type of sensation that we do not. Some people like light phones, heavier phones, phones that feel cold in the hand, phones with a soft-feel finish.
Once again, I have no point what you're trying to prove. If we were all told to "do it ourselves" there would be no legitimate basis to which to enrich a conversation by. Criticism is necessary.
30. izim1 (Posts: 62; Member since: 04 Feb 2013)
Lol calm down, junior. Nothing on here, comments or otherwise, is worth you getting all riled up about. You're going to give yourself a stroke or something. Btw, don't gripe about the writters bias then use the word "should" when giving your own opinion about what "premium" is.. makes you seem like a douche, if you catch my drift. Lighten up, sport.
36. miket247 (Posts: 81; Member since: 16 Apr 2013)
Hey izim! You sure have a lot of nasty words to throw at other people....junior, fella, douche... Kinda shows that you think your better than everyone else, or that your opinion is the only one that matters. Too bad that your the only DOUCHE trolling here. Maybe you should wipe the jism off your face izim!
37. izim1 (Posts: 62; Member since: 04 Feb 2013)
Lol what? Settle down, sport. No one is intimidated by internet aggression (:
12. maccess (Posts: 392; Member since: 16 Jan 2013)
don't worry man you're not alone.. actually lots of people including me didn't mind with the samsung plastic and even prefer it over something likes aluminium.. once you got scratch and dent on your aluminium body there's no way you can fix it.. if my s4's back got too much scratch i just simply replace it with a new one.. something that you can't do with aluminium phone.. and i never like the "cold" feeling or too "hot" feeling of the aluminium body..
28. YuLeven (Posts: 43; Member since: 14 May 2013)
I think the same goes for 'tech authors' saying that LCD is better due to more natural looking colors. What if I just like the oversaturated feel of AMOLED? What if I like the inky blacks? After all, I don't give a rats arse to natural colors since it's just a phone, I just want the most appealing experience and in my case that's AMOLED.
31. KillgoreTrout (Posts: 45; Member since: 04 Sep 2013)
JMartin22's opinion is his and his alone. I agree with Izim1. I don't understand why you would be upset at a comparison article. It is like you think people are so stupid that they would have no choice but to agree with 100% of what an author says. I find your comment insulting Jmartin22. These articles are for our enjoyment and people are more than capable of having their own opinions while still reading opinions from others. "Force their own ideology.." Give me a break...
4. rd_nest (Posts: 435; Member since: 06 Jun 2010)
"it's safe to say that the LG G2's IPS LCD screen produces more true-to-life..."
That's a really strange statement. Strange in sense that IPS can only show 36% of total RGB colour space. So, how can they have "true-to-life" colour? Did they actually measure the colour output somehow? What instruments did you use? Without checking various display parameters, how can you use such statements?
BTW, according to CR (consumerreports.org), the best display available now is a OLED display.
You simply create controversy using such statement.
10. Damitel (Posts: 60; Member since: 21 Apr 2013)
I am totally disappointed how often LCD is said to be Superior or better than AMOLED, some of these things are subjective, is never an absolute truth. Companies that use AMOLED have reasons for that. People that use AMOLED screen never complain except tech analysts.
14. maccess (Posts: 392; Member since: 16 Jan 2013)
IMO amoled can never be compared to lcd.. each type of screen has their own purpose.. if you want a more "realistic" colour then go with lcd.. if you like saturation and "WOW" factor you can go with amoled.. for me it just pure stupid for people that whining about how unnatural the colour of amoled screen because it supposed to be like that.. that's why i prefer amoled.. i just like my videos and my games looks vibrant and catchy with pure black and nice contrast..
17. JMartin22 (Posts: 391; Member since: 30 Apr 2013)
AMOLED has the potential to surpass even the most high-end LCD panel on the market. The technology is still in its infancy; obvious kinks with screen longevity and energy efficiency have to be be worked out.
But at the end of the day, this display panel will one day surpass LCD [an old industry standard] in battery life, color reproduction and be lower in production cost. Not to mention they're much more responsive and snappy to the sensation of touch than LCD panels are.
21. Damitel (Posts: 60; Member since: 21 Apr 2013)
Maccess, God bless u for that important point.
48. Long1 (Posts: 376; Member since: 18 May 2013)
iMedia will bash hard AMOLED displays, as long, as it is not affordable for Apple. This is new tech and Samsung(the best AMOLED developer), and the other companies, have not capacity to produce plenty of them, even for their own devices .
When Samsung have capacity to produce iPhone AMOLED displays, the same day all the iMedia will write that AMOLED is the best display tech ever, and how clever was Apple to wait until Samsung, make it right. Chep dirty tricks. LOL
50. Long1 (Posts: 376; Member since: 18 May 2013)
People that use AMOLED screen never complain except iTech "analysts"
I made it right for you.:)
25. Napalm_3nema (Posts: 434; Member since: 14 Jun 2013)
According to Display Mate, the best mobile displays are IPS. 36% of the entire RGB gamut is not important, but 100% of sRGB is. AMOLED has too large a color gamut, which is just as bad as not having enough.
49. Long1 (Posts: 376; Member since: 18 May 2013)
Too large a color gamut, can be adjusted(and it's done) , but the opposite- NOT.
51. Long1 (Posts: 376; Member since: 18 May 2013)
This , that Rey didn't mention "pentile" yet, comes to tell you that Note 3 could be NOT "pentile". It's silence about that.
Otherwise you would read "pentile" in all the articles about Note 3 in all iMedia.(they have microscopes)
32. papss (Posts: 2163; Member since: 03 Sep 2012)
My question is does oled have the same "bluish/green tone when you change the angles that it used to before soled?

Phonearena!Pink Note3 Why?Black looks more beautiful!Next time please use two phones with the same color

because only women takedown notes!!! haha!
6. papss (Posts: 2163; Member since: 03 Sep 2012)
I'm so confused about what phone to buy as a second phone... I prefer the G2 but worry about updates, I love the note 3 but the lack of IOS is a deal breaker.. I would love to wait for the 1520 but waiting hmmm
9. darkkjedii (Posts: 7714; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Papss remember the buyers remorse period. Try em both, then pull the trigger on one and enjoy it. I have to have both iOS, and android also. Note 2 and ip5s for me, the note 3's back combined with it not blowing me away made my mind up to keep my note 2
15. maccess (Posts: 392; Member since: 16 Jan 2013)
what do you mean the lack of IOS? do you mean OIS?
19. imkyle (Posts: 910; Member since: 18 Nov 2010)
Both of them have huge screens, insanely fast CPU's and GPU's so specs wise they are neck and neck. The Note 3 offers so much stuff with the s-pen. If you take notes a lot then this device is for you. If you don't then I would look at the G2. The G2 is also $100 cheaper on contract. Both are great phones.
24. MistB (Posts: 508; Member since: 07 Jul 2012)
Knowing Samsung, they will most likely release an updated version of the Note 3 halfway through it's lifecycle so fingerprint reader/OIS with 4.4 installed out of the box will be around by the time Galaxy S5 is unveiled, or they will simply update the Note 3 with 4.4 Kit Kat shortly after the GS5 is unveiled but without OIS on board.
With the G2 that's a bit tricky but seeing as LG put a lot of investment into advertising the heck out of the G2 compared to its predecessor, it's safe to say this is their investment into the bank for a full year despite the fact that LG are also making the nexus 5 so updates galore will be their priority I hope. Best thing really is wait for the Nokia 1520 announcement and make up your mind then, I'd be asking myself whether Nokia or MS will continue supporting the 1520 for longer than 18 months once Nokia's Lumia is sold to MS!
27. MartyK (Posts: 651; Member since: 11 Apr 2012)
Don't forget to throw in the Nexus-5 into the mix ,...this is going to be a very rough decision this year...
this is so sad, I bet Apple lover don't have to go through this stress....hahahah
29. RoyalPayne (banned) (Posts: 458; Member since: 07 Aug 2013)
1520 id say papss, but since u already own 1020, Id suggest Note 3, htc one or sony z1
8. darkkjedii (Posts: 7714; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Nice phones. Looks wise g2 gets the nod, but the notes better all around most likely. All up to the user though.
11. SonyFindOneDroidple (Posts: 441; Member since: 11 May 2013)
As far as other tech sites are concerned, the design and feel of the note3 are excellent for them.. I used the photo compare tool of gsmarena and the picture quality of g2 is not that great compared to gs4, why is that??
18. JMartin22 (Posts: 391; Member since: 30 Apr 2013)
The G2's advantage is taking pictures in low-light settings and turbulent usage [moving vehicles, very shaky hands]
13. maherk (Posts: 62; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
Cheap shot phonearena!! Using the pink version is a lame way to repel people from the note 3.
43. lpratas (Posts: 83; Member since: 09 Nov 2011)
Oh yeah? And you are a girl! It's a phone as for business as for geeks.
22. flynfree (Posts: 363; Member since: 09 Jun 2013)
These two are both beast, the only advantages of gnote3 are having replaceable batt, s pen, hug display, 3gig of ram. In term of performance, they're both spectacular, and I love to know that G2 got 11+ hour of internet browsing. Good luck for both of you!!!
40. MCrapp (Posts: 312; Member since: 07 Apr 2013)
G2 don't have a SD card slot,so when you buy 16GB version...... You get only 8-9GB free space!
26. ajac09 (Posts: 1105; Member since: 30 Sep 2009)
If the G2 had come out on unboxing day it would be doing well but the note 3 will kill it
38. Gatman (Posts: 14; Member since: 07 Sep 2013)
I really don't know if 3 gigs of ram is any different from 2 .
41. zachattack (Posts: 201; Member since: 31 Jul 2013)
You know why they delayed this vs. video right..? Because we all knew the samsung fanboys would pop out of the woodwork like ants. We all know G2 > Note 3, that said Note 3 is a nice tablet, but not comparable to the G2
42. yasir-921 (Posts: 73; Member since: 02 Oct 2012)
G2 Better Than Note iII.
G2's Camera, Battery File, Ergonomics, Looks, U.I better than Note 3's...
44. Samsungadroidrules (Posts: 104; Member since: 28 Jul 2013)
NOTE 3 is way way Better and USEFUL in Real Life, except if you are just stock in your House almost everyday. Note 3, GREAT DESIGN! Great Performance! Love the new features of the S-Pen, and its amazing that it was able to increase the screen size without increasing the whole Height of the phone. Awesome! Great job Samsung-King of Android! :)
46. Long1 (Posts: 376; Member since: 18 May 2013)
Don't worry guys. iMedia will bash hard AMOLED displays, as long, as it is not affordable for Apple. This is new tech and Samsung(the best AMOLED developer), and the other companies, have no capacity to produce plenty of them, even for their own devices .
When Samsung have capacity to produce iPhone AMOLED displays, the same day all the iMedia will write that AMOLED is the best display tech, and how clever was Apple to wait until Samsung to make it right.
And then you will read hundreds of articles , how superior are iPhone retina-amoled(samsung) displays , vs Samsung displays.
47. Long1 (Posts: 376; Member since: 18 May 2013)
Ray again shamelessly lie that Note 3 display is not good on day light. AMOLED so far had a bit issue there , but not anymore with Note 3 display.
Next lie is about color superiority of G2, using again this apple-ish " true-to-life colors" iBS
Third lie is that he, suggest that Note 3 is not more beautiful and classy design than G2.
He didn't bother to mention multi-window and drag and drop , too
As I said not long ago , LG G2 will last as long as Note 3 come on the market. It will be forgotten just like HTC One(G2 is much better but sealed like One). No matter how the iMedia push them, to take slice of the Samsung's market, so Apple to regain the lead- it will not happen.
