Samsung Galaxy Note 3 enters the phablet ring: 5.7" AMOLED display and new S Pen
0. phoneArena 04 Sep 2013, 12:16 posted on
Tears of joy are running down the cheeks of phablet fans worldwide today, as the third edition of the phone that created the category was just announced by Samsung at the IFA expo today. It is dubbed Galaxy Note 3, and will throw its weight into quite the different phablet environment than what it was used to the last two years. Against the formidable competition of gigantic phones like the Sony Xperia Z Ultra the Note 3 wields a new S-Pen stylus with increased functionality, a 5.7" Full HD Super AMOLED display - a feast in its own - as well as all the flagship bells and whistles we'd expect this season, and even more...

The only thing you're telling people is how annoying you can be. There's no factual basis or truth to your statement.

I've had the original Note, and a Note II. Last week I bought the Galaxy Mega 6.3, I'm doing this comment on. The Mega is almost as light as my note 2 and has a massive beautiful screen. So far I've had no performance problems. Only noticeable difference is that camera app shuts down a little slower. Since screen is so much bigger, I've actually had no problem using the included S Note app with my finger or a simple capacitative screen stylus I got from staples so I don't mind not having the notes built in stylus. Bought the mega for$479 off contract. The Note III is nice but frankly, for.25 more screen, it's not worth it, especially since it's better specs don't mean much in everyday use. Even I was surprised. I suspect, the note 4 will be a mega with a stylus, and when it is, I'll buy one. With Sony, HTC, and Acer building phones with screens over 6 inches, 5.7 just isn't worth the money

Shut up take my money. A little bit more. And some extra to be safe.

Where is the external speaker?
The so called leather looks more like plastic with fake plastic stitching. I'll be covering that up pronto if I get this one!
3GB of RAM is very nice, as is the 1080p 5.7" AMOLED screen.
I wish they'd gone a little bigger on the battery though.

It's on the bottom of the phone, the same style placement Apple is known for putting their speaker grills.

If you see their whole presentation then, they have said that the battery performance is 4 hrs better than note 2 in video playback. Seems awesome software optimization

Only 2 disappointments...
I thought they would increase the battery life in terms of mAh capacity by more than 3,200 mAh. This slim tirade manufacturers are on are putting longevity in a plateau. They did promise better battery life performance, even with the improved GPU/CPU/resolution though. So we'll see how detrimental it is.
There's no Optical Image Stabilization on the Note 3's camera. I would have hoped the rumors would be false. But to compensate for this. They used a more sophisticated and advanced LED flash technology for better low-light performance.
Other than that, the phone really is a hardware technological masterpiece for its time, and software is no exception either. Also, I wonder if this AMOLED panel will feature an unannounced RBG-Matrix sub-pixel layout like the Note II did.

S800/Exynos 5420 is more energy efficient, which is why it yields to longer battery usage.

Oh..this is actually better than I expected.
You can take my money, Samsung.
My only slight worry was about the battery, but if it indeed offers even BETTER ENDURANCE than the Note 2 while packing far and beyond better chipset and only slightly larger battery, then this is a true masterpiece of a device!

OMG! u guys always say that iOS is "boring", but look at this ugly outdated TouchWizz
88. hellonerds (Posts: 303; Member since: 27 Aug 2013)
Nova launcher / rooting takes care of that..unlike my jailbroken iPhone nvm..
98. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10309; Member since: 14 May 2012)
LiquidSmooth v2.9 took care of everything. Animations are stunning. Plus vanilla Android! :)

I tired that on my GS3 and its nice.. But for note I will be keeping it some what stock.. I like to use the stylus and some features from Samsung. If I wanted to run full asop /Cymod ect I would get a Sony/LG /nexus ect..don't like having a dead s pen that I can't use to it full potential
155. iushnt (Posts: 1301; Member since: 06 Feb 2013)
the real answer is TouchWizz is on android and you can customize android heavily with several third party launchers and themes. What's the solution for iOS without jailbreak

Can't wait.. Will root this beast to make it more faster and better battery.. Don't like carrier crap and some Samsung crapware..

So they pull an apple move just like the galaxy line and I don't see any bashing, my fault you all don't bash android. I rather wait on the Nokia 1520 with the updates then compare.

Have fun with the cluttered tiles on the 6" screen.
123. Berzerk000 (Posts: 4250; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
How did they pull an Apple? They more than doubled the performance, added 50% more RAM, about 50% higher pixel density, larger display but same size, added even more functionality to the S-Pen, and FINALLY got rid of that horrid glossy plastic. That's much more than Apple ever did with a single upgrade.

Isn't a leatherback a turtle lol? Well now it's a phablet.

PA how can you guys post such a statement like this "The 13 MP camera on the back seems to be directly borrowed from the S4, ensuring some of the top quality images coming from an Android phone..." and when you tested the S4 versus the Moto X the S4 camera wasn't so hot especially in low light? I swear it's like a kid with a new toy, it's the best thing since sliced bread one day and so-so tomorrow and today it's great! The sensationalism in here is incredible.
156. iushnt (Posts: 1301; Member since: 06 Feb 2013)
low light is not only the thing that everyone want in a camera.
108. Danishs (Posts: 147; Member since: 23 May 2013)
I have an HTC One and I have to admit with no bias.. this phone is a BEAST. It brought everything we wanted. Ditched the glossy plastic back, 3gb RAM, 4k recording. What more can you ask for in a modern flagship?
112. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10309; Member since: 14 May 2012)
A solar powered battery would have me setting a tent outside a store right now.

However I am wondering how the leather will hold up over time.
120. SonyFindOneDroidple (Posts: 757; Member since: 11 May 2013)
It is not real leather.. it is still plastic accdg to androidauthority but with excellent touch on it.. And besides, it is removable back cover, you can buy different of them-Matte finish and the faux-leather

am i the only one that thinks this is ugly and uninspired?

This is why I love Samsung, coming to all US carriers. Great device and it looks a ton like the Sprint version of the Galaxy S II, but that's not bad, I like it. Why can't Sony be the same and bring it's flagship to all the US carriers? sigh. I know my decision..
139. zombiewolf115 (Posts: 38; Member since: 16 Jul 2013)
its the same thing. this is just like apple lol. guys look i have the new note 3 it looks exactly the same as the older one. but i swear to u its different i promise. samsung u really lost ur creativity

The Note III is definitely king of phablets, the ZU didn't even stand a chance and neither did anything else
158. 9thWonderful (Posts: 232; Member since: 24 Jan 2013)
eh...bigger S4 w/updated features. feel like i got away from Apple to get into something different just to be returned back to a new Apple (Samsung).
159. goprochyo (Posts: 8; Member since: 06 Aug 2013)
i have noticed 4 cons :
1. no OIS
2. only 3200 mAh battery (i was spected to be at least 3500 mAh in this huge 5.7'' phablet !!! LG G2 put 3000 mAh only in 5.2'' phone)
3. all the samsung smartphone build really cheap plastic, thats can broken easily.
4. less pixel density 386ppi than other compitetor.( barely can see on sunlight)
why samsung doesn't listen this things ?

I really don't get you at all. Probably, all of you who are talking bad about this phone are just kids or crazy fan boy who is trying to justify a purchase of some other brand and just trying to make yourselves feel better. Although I own GS2, and like Samsung as a brand I will never say that other phone is bad or crappy or anything else just coz I would not buy it, or I can't buy it...All of these phones (G2, SXZ1, SXZ ultra, HTC) are really great and it just a matter of preferences which one you want to choose. If I'm trying to be unbiased and compare these phones to the NOTE 3, It gives the most for the buck. Best possible specs available at this moment (Samsung has always the best hardware at the moment of release), great screen, design is something I would not discuss since it is a good looking for me, but not necessary to others, and the S-PEN. All other phones are pretty similar, have the same CPU, same GPU, more or less the same screen size, but the S-PEN is NOTE3 exclusive feature, and awesome in my opinion. All the possibilities you can do with it are just amazing, multitasking at its best. None of other manufacturers have made anything similar. If I look at the XYZ1, it’s a great phone per se, but nothing interesting for me. CPU and GPU are ok, nowadays standard, design wise is ugly (my opinion) coz it looks as a brick with huge bezels, has water, dust proof feature that might be cool for someone, but I do not intend to swim with my phone or take it to Sahara, so not a dealmaker for me. It has 20mpx cam, which is cool, but also not a dealmaker for me coz since we past 5mpx all photos look great for me and I do not intend to print a jumbo billboards so no use for me on that as well. But what matters is size, weight, battery, microsd and functionality and here is the SAMSUNG the king, coz it is not a regular phone, it’s a niche phone and shouldn't be compared to the XYZ1, yet to the Ultra which, in my opinion is a huge brick the will be a fail since it cannot match NOTE3 in any aspect except its size, which is at the same moment a deal breaker. Looking at the phablet category, I cannot find better phone than NOTE3. Sure, there are some specs better on other phones, but overall, NOTE3 is the king, best benchmark scores, latest tech, S-pen, features, Knox security...actually, the only thing I could say it could be done better is design. I am open for discussion so please, let me know why other would be better than this, and please don't mention design and materials….Ppl are taking about the same SAMSUNG design, yet praising SONY design, but just look at their last 30 phones, all the same design, so don’t be hypocrites. Maybe Samsung is not the best looking phone in town, but sure has better ergonomics. Nevertheless, OEMS should be the same, coz we wouldn’t have any competition and at least you have a large choice, so in the end, take what you like and STFU. Love what you got, but respect others!!!
