Near field communication is on the battery on my galaxy s 2 as well, which makes.me wonder why att is blocking nfc.

Most likely it wont be open until either:

a) They get a cut of the action or
b) Apple forces them to allow the iOS version (whenever that is) and Android reaps the benefits as well.

I have nothing against Android or iOS but Apple does play hardball with the carriers much more then Google. Sometimes this is a good thing and sometimes it is bad.

In this case Google should have played hardball to have it enabled but seeing how they can't even keep bloatware off their own Nexus phone I am not surprised that they didn't.
