Samsung Droid Charge unboxing

0. phoneArena 27 Apr 2011, 00:17 posted on

On April 28th, Verizon will release its second 4G LTE smartphone, the Samsung Droid Charge SCH-i510, which will sell for $299.99 (after rebate) with a 2-year contract.. We recieved our review unit a few hours ago and so far we have been pretty impressed with what we've seen. The large 4.3" Super AMOLED Plus display at WVGA resolution shows crisp text and images with good color saturation. With the brightness turned all the way up on the Droid Charge, it is easier to view outside on a sunny day, where the TFT display on the HTC ThunderBolt is dark and hardly visible.

A 32 GB card preinstalled? Damn, okay, I can kinda see the 300 buck tag being justified now. 32 gig cards are almost a hundred by themselves.

BTW. Thunderbolt also has a 32 Gig card preinstalled and still costs only $250. $300 is still too high.

I hope this one is good. The fascinate really made people not like samsung because they put the worst phone on their line up on the biggest carrier. Talk about a bad move. Hopefully this phone will redeem them. I still wish they would've just released the Samsung Galaxy S II for Verizon in the summer and they would've dominated.

Does this have Gorilla Glass like the Samsung Galaxy phones? At least the battery is bigger than the Thunderbolts and their UI is less power hungry than the HTC's.

There were rumors(?) that one is able to choose stock android launcher or touchwiz on the Droid Charge. Is that true?

Just install Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher if you want stock plus a few extra goodies. Other than slow updates Touchwiz should not be an issue at all.

I really hope this phone is more "polished" than the Thunderbolt is, in regards to the radio firmware. The Thunderbolt has been horrible, jumping between 1x/3G/4G constantly... often times leaving me with no data whatsoever.

I'll switch to this in a heartbeat if Samsung's firmware is a better. (couldn't be any worse I suppose)

Dave, Verizon is having problems with their LTE/4G network today which could explain the problems you are having.

Yea Motorola and samsung both use gorilla glass on their high end phones.

I have had issues with the Thunderbolt switching between 1x and 3g randomly since day one. On of the reasons I'm looking at the charge. Also this Thunderbolt lags much more than my Droid x yet has higher Quadrant scores.
