Samsung ATIV S Hands-on

0. phoneArena posted on 29 Oct 2012, 18:10

The Samsung ATIV S has had a bit of a low profile since it was announced earlier this summer, so we were very happy to see it on display at the Windows Phone 8 event today in San Francisco

Just a classy looking device. As an AT&T user, it seems strange to say- but here is a phone I really wanted to rt and I won't be able to. I am glad for Verizon users. This can really fit the bill of a premium device if the 8X doesn't make the grade.

Wow, you need all this phones to figure out that you were incompatible to Android?! Wow, you must be really stupid then or may be you're just trolling. Watch out your nose is growing!

Seriously bro what country are you from? I don't recognize the dialect you're using.

Why are all windows phone devices running on same processors? Same OS on all brands. The only difference is the OEMs logo. Very boring

4. DaNTRoN posted on 29 Oct 2012, 18:34 3 1

I was wondering this earlier. Pretty much the same phone. I would just get Nokia for the hell of it at this point.

Standardized equipment, easier to push updates to.

14. snowgator posted on 29 Oct 2012, 21:00 2

No offense twens, but that comment kinda shows you haven't paid that close attention to WP 7 or understand WP 8. Agreed, Android has skins to set them apart from their competition, but come on now- I have used LG's and Samsungs and HTC's. They are the same OS under the skins, and often those skins drag down performance. (Multi-core Androids on ICS are really, really good though. I am a huge fan of what they have accomplished.)

WP 8 will provide opportunities for OEM's to have different feels. Their Hubs are the start. They will have unique experiences and apps within those hubs, and that will give the chance to add a little variety. There will also be hardware differences. Nokia has wireless charging, Samsung is rumored to have the "tap to share" ability they sell on the GS3 also on the ATIV.

But, you are correct- especially at launch there is very little differences in processors. Why? Because no matter how good this rollout is, there will be glitches and problems. It is a new kernal and the first time it has run on multicore processors. As problems show up, a uniformed set of devices provides for easier updates and firmware fixes.

HTC is already thought to have a quad core Titan-style device waiting in the wings. Other, more unique experiences are coming. But, it is WP 8. It is not open. It is different. It will not appeal to everyone.

That is part of the appeal.

They're all running on the chipset to make performance consistent across all Windows phones. That's why windows phone don't lag or have any performance issues.

If only Samsung made all of their devices with the same material they made this one with. Aside from that, I'm gonna call it now and say that when PA reviewers get to this device, they're not going to mention a single letdown of WP8 as they did in the 8X review and are only going to have good things to say about it.

Here's to hoping for a GSM version.

btw it is the same poly-carbonated body as all samsung device ... it is just the finish that makes it look as metal

18. Izzy_V posted on 30 Oct 2012, 01:06

I could have sworn I read an article that said the Ativ was made of some sort of metal. Thanks for clearing that up.

it's like the titanium grey note 2.

13. chunk1x posted on 29 Oct 2012, 20:26

If I'm going to buy Samsung, Note 2 will be a much better deal. This feels like Galaxy 3 ripoff. Nokia and HTC are more justifiable choice than this.

17. g2a5b0e posted on 30 Oct 2012, 00:31 1

Sure, it looks like the Galaxy S3, but how is it a rip-off? Samsung's ripping off their own designs now? That doesn't make any sense. Does that also mean that the iPhone 4S is a rip off of the iPhone 4 since they look pretty much identical? The fact that it's a different OS doesn't mean they need to go & radically change their design. Also, with Nokia & HTC's phones looking so much alike, Samsung's phone surprisingly stands out in the Windows Phone arena. Besides, with the boatloads the S3 is selling, it's probably a smart choice.

25. jchuamanl posted on 30 Oct 2012, 09:35

For me it looks like something between the S2 and the S3. Anyway, this is a Samsung phone, they can use the same design with its phones.

16. Mobile-X-Pert posted on 29 Oct 2012, 21:08 1

But I bet you this phone will perform much better than the Note 2.

20. redmd posted on 30 Oct 2012, 01:41

ativ s is like a mini note 2 running on WP 8. but my Note II will disagree on what you said.

22. pikapowerize (banned) posted on 30 Oct 2012, 06:48

ativ s looks great, stylish and premium-looking device... it put the plastic s3 to shame!

hope samsung will change its designer!! and hire people who are really inspired and has style!

24. g2a5b0e posted on 30 Oct 2012, 09:18

How does it put the S3 to shame? It has essentially the same design & it's also plastic. Youtube is acting strange right now, but here's the link.
