Sailfish OS approved by Russia for official governmental and corporate use

Jolla's Sailfish OS received a boost today from Russia where the OS was certified in the country for governmental and corporate use. The country has said that by 2025, it wants to cut its use of U.S. developed mobile operating systems like Android and iOS to 50%. Last year, the pair combined for a 95% market share in the country. Also in the running was Tizen.
A new company in Russia called Open Mobile Platform has already licensed Sailfish in the country with an eye toward using the developer community to make it a more secure offering. We could see new Sailfish devices appear in Russia some time in 2017.
Sailfish has an advantage over other mobile OS choices like Firefox OS because of its compatibility with Android apps. Tizen can also be used to access some Android apps with help from the Open Mobile Application Compatibility Layer (ACL), available in the Tizen app store.
The process of certifying Sailfish in Russia is one that has taken 18 months to complete. It started with analysis by the IT Ministry of Russia to determine which mobile OS it should back, Tizen or Sailfish. According to Jolla Chairman Antti Saarnio, a version of Sailfish was built by a local Russian firm so that the country could have an independent OS supported by Jolla's code base. Rather than a forked version of Sailfish, it is a model of the OS that the Russian licensing partner can custom build to the requirements of customers.
