You might recall Republic Wireless and if the name doesn't ring a bell, perhaps the $19 monthly unlimited voice, text and 3G data plan strikes a chord with you; the company is resuming its Beta rollout in the Summer and will get in touch with interested parties soon...

I'm one of those currently on their list. With a daughter heading off to college, where she will most likely have better wifi inside buildings than cell signal, this sounds like an appropriate option to try.
