Report: A6 chip in Apple iPhone 5 is a custom design; 1GB of RAM is aboard

0. phoneArena 16 Sep 2012, 00:55 posted on

While Apple really didn't break down the details of the A6 SoC in the new Apple iPhone 5, a report on Saturday says that the A6 is the creation of Apple's in-house design team; additionally, the report says that the new Apple iPhone 5 has 1GB of RAM, double the amount in the Apple iPhone 4S...

Wow. Apple actually still can design new things. Nice, if it really lives up to Apples claims we finally have an Apple chip thats beefy not only in graphics performance.

I suspect that Apple's A6 chip will not exactly be beefy in comparison to say, the S4 Pro, but it will give a user experience that convinces the owners of 3GS and 4 handsets that they need to upgrade to the new iP5.

For Apple, it is more about keeping their installed base happy and profitability of the handset than performance comparisons to Android (or WP for that matter).

Indeed. What matters is real life performance.

Indeed. Real life test numbers that compare actual performance.
Buying a high-end phone is like buying a muscle car. I already know it's fast and I know the horsepower numbers are not the only thing that determine how fast it is, but I'd still like to know what the engine puts out regardless. So someone please clock this thing and tell me how many numbers it can crunch...

Well, one piece of information appears to have leaked out - the iP5 is equipped with 1 Gb of RAM. There is an article on macrumors about the RAM spec for the phone based on part numbers that have appeared in photos of the A6.

let me make this very simple for ya.
The A6, as I've said from the beginning is an A9 32nm HKG+ dual core chip manufactured by samsung. It is in laymen's terms basically a modified Exynos 4212 chip. That exynos is also an A9 32nm HKG+ dual core chip manufactured by samsung. Bot the A lines and Exynos lines have always been sister chips with slight modifications and different GPUs. Its not that hard.
However, Anandtech came out right away and said it looks like it "MIGHT" be an A15, and then everyone ran with it... and turned "MIGHT" into "IS" a long the way.
As far as I can tell, I was the ONLY person saying that was bullshyt and that it was in fact an A9 based 4212 sister chip.

So yea, that makes me "smart"... since I was the only one that was right.

Geekbench has put up a benchmark score of 1601 for the A6. The article I read is posted on macrumors. The article makes the claim that the 1601 score exceeds scores produced by all Android phones on Geekbench. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the listing of scores for all Android phones on Geekbench, so no frame of reference. I would expect the A6 to beat a GS II, but not a GS III.

if the A6 is a modified 4212, that is just the dual core version of the quadcore found in the SGS3 international version. The A6 however has a more powerful PowerVR GPU than the Mali400 that the Samsung uses... so some of the difference would be right there.

Without getting a breakdown of each category the score to see it all, its hard to tell. But I would expect it to be on par or slightly higher/lower depending on the GPU use.

no body is saying the iPhone 5 is the best phone man...

damn android won ok its the best... you happy now? get over it...

apple's brand will always be iconic and the talk of the town... it creates more buzz than anything else... look at the number of comments in all the previous articles... that's your proof...

all the writer is doing is informing us of what this A6 chip is about...

so many broken records in here... hahaha smh

never see any complaints when there are a bunch of android articles... but as soon as someone says something positive about apple is DOOMS DAY...lol

my point is there's no comparison... android has the most powerful and up-to-date tech in their phones... no contest...

BUT this is still news it's worth reading about so people are informed of whats under iPhone's hood...

The same with windows phone... they will post some chip specs about that phone too...

just because its not android doesn't make it not worth talking about... GEEZ

Everything on that list has been existing since ICS...

Once again, Apple is late to the game.

Knew it wasn't a quad-core. Remember how Apple kept emphasizing its 4S was a dual-core? I was suspecting since they didn't say anything about the no. of cores, the 5 must be dual.
And I don't think there will be a quad-core next year. Why does Apple need more cores on iOS? A newer chip will suffice.

less cores needed becuase the demands ios is askin for to run it is "less" than android phones........it does what it does and it does it well......only problem is ..........you're paying the same price you would pay for a laptop for a "pretty-basic" phone.............and i meant that its pretty AND basic lol

i feel the new xperia line is what we all been looking for........beauty, power, and its still android! so go figure

I thought I saw something the other day about an Xperia Nexus coming... For one reason or another, there has always been a deal-breaker for me with Sony smartphones, but an Xperia Nexus? That's got my attention, if true.

Ok, oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, my Galaxy S3 isn't really an S3, it's actually a Super Android Power Phone 5000, custom by me... Yeah, renaming something doesn't make it a custom.

Who cares as long as it provides twice the performance. A phone must be judged on the basis of real world performance not its specs. iPhone 5 is a very decent phone. In fact I am gonna be selling my galaxy S3 to buy it as the cheap plastic feel of the S3 is too much for me to bear. It's not about being an iFan or a fandroid. It's about what you want and what you prefer.

you people keep sayin a phone needs to be based on "real world" performance but all the reviews i have watched so far have shown me "buttery smooth" performance from the galaxy s3........and its not even runnin jellybean yet! so i still dont know how the iphone is better in real life performance or anything for that matter.......except design, thats all i can give the iphone

I did not say galaxy S3 is not good. It's a great phone! And it is smooth and will be as butterly smooth when it gets JB but the iPhone is pretty darn good. I hate accepting this but the design beats galaxy S3, the one x, 4X HD and thelumia 920 hands down. The best android in terms of design is the one s.
