RPG FTW: 10 role-playing games for Android and iPhone
10 role-playing games for Android and iPhone
1. Order & Chaos Online
Since there is no mobile version of World of Warcraft yet, your best alternative is to get Order & Chaos Online instead. Yes, it may not be cheap and you will have to sign up for a monthly subscription, but chances are you won't find a better MMO RPG that can be played on a smartphone.
Android ($6.99) | iPhone ($6.99)
2. Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy is a name that needs no introduction. The franchise has been around since the '80s and is loved by RPG fans from Jersey to Japan. The steep pricing, however, might stop you from downloading it, unless you are a hardcore fan of the series.
Android ($15.99) | iPhone ($15.99)
3. Zenonia 4
Here is a very well-made role-playing game that does not cost a dime. It has pretty graphics, cool power moves, engaging story, and three challenging levels of difficulty.
Android | iPhone
4. Gurk II, the 8-bit RPG
Perhaps an old-school RPG is what you are looking for? Then check out Gurk II, which is available on Android. It has a pronounced '80s look and feel, right down to the MIDI synthesized sound effects.
5. Secret of Mana
If you owned a Super Nintendo in the '90s, you might have played the highly acclaimed Secret of Mana. The awesome role-playing game now lives on as a remake for the iPhone.
6. Pocket RPG
Pocket RPG is not an ordinary role-playing game. Your character's stats are reset before each level, which means you have to plan his or her development wisely depending on what creatures lurk ahead. Speaking of characters, there are three hero classes, each with its own fighting style and special abilities.
Android ($1.99) | iPhone ($2.99)
7. MapleStory Live
Part RPG, part platformer, MapleStory Live started off as an online computer game. Just like its PC cousin, it is free to play, with optional in-game purchases. It features two distinct character classes and a huge 2D map that awaits to be explored.
Android ($4.49), Free version | iPhone
8. Inotia 4
The fourth installment of this popular mobile RPG has already been released for iOS. It comes with six different character classes, a total of 90 skills, and one of the largest maps you will ever find on a smartphone role-playing game. In the meantime, Android users can check out Inotia 3 while waiting for the sequel to be released.
9. Buddy Rush
The socially-oriented RPG Buddy Rush was once playable only on Facebook, but it is now available on mobile devices as well. The action takes place in a cartoonish 3D world, and your goal is to complete missions with the heroes that you and your friends have created.
Android | iPhone
10. Mage Gauntlet
Mage Gauntlet is a title made especially for iOS. It has been inspired by RPGs from the 8- and 16-bit eras, which explains the old-school graphics and soundtrack.
