Qi wireless charging accessories will come to the Samsung Galaxy S 4

0. phoneArena 18 Mar 2013, 13:48 posted on

A press release from Qi reveals that the Samsung Galaxy S 4 users will have a chance to wirelessly charge their device with the use of a special backplate; unfortunately, pricing and availability were both left out of the press release which also mentioned that the wireless charging pad was demonstrated during Samsung Unpacked 2013...

Samsung is in a nice position where companies like Qualcomm and Qi brag that Samsung is using their technology.

And no, it is not because they are hiding something like one not so objective poster suggested int eh Qualcomm 600 GS4 article.

I personally think Samsung was either afraid that it would be the subject of many complains or had the intention of adding it in too late in its production because there is no reason (maybe cost) to exclude wireless charging from the base device. Its a great technology.

No I doubt it. They bragged about in the GS3 presentation but that one was super long.

You knew if they added it in the GS3 back plate they would do so here as well.

The back plate won't fit but there is one for the GS3 in some countries. It uses the qi standard so yes the technology works but I doubt the GS4 backplate would fit on the GS3 or note 2. Different sizes and shape.

Personally I don't find wireless charging all that exciting. All of my phones have been in cases, so I would need to remove the phone from the case in addition to having a special back plate to allow it to charge.

To the best of my knowledge most phones will charge with the case still on, The Lumia 920 will charge with an Otterbox Defender on it.

Who puts an otterbox defender on a Lumia 920?

I have a case on my Lumia 920, which has built-in Qi charging capabilities, and it charges perfectly without removing the case. The Nokia 920 is as strong as a rock, and doesn't really need to have a protective casing, but it still helps the resale value...

Nokia includes wireless charging on many of their Lumia products for free. I guess Samsung is feeling pretty cocky, and no longer feels the need to offer good value for the price. It kind of reminds me of another tech company that over charges for what they sell. I'm sure that nobody has ever heard of Apple...
