QHD screens: yes or no; Windows Phone 8.1 update, and Sony's 6-month upgrade cycle: Q&A 19
PhoneArena is taking a look at some intriguing topics surrounding recent events. Namely, we're answering questions about Sony's 6-month upgrade cycle, the Windows Phone 8.1 update release date, the status of QHD screens, and more!

It is very unlikely that Sony will ever have an equal chance to compete with the upcoming devices from the top 3 manufacturers later this year ; LG, Apple, Samsung. Once the Z3 hits the LG G3 will likely be gaining momentum with it's highly anticipated specs, Apple's iPhone 6 will be one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year with the bezel-less 3 sided YOUM Galaxy Note 4. The 6 month cycle in my opinion is not a smart move especially in 2014 when the smartphone market is showing a downward trend.
In addition to extreme competition in Q2-4, we are already 1/3 into 2014, and the Z2 production is awful.

Sony 6 month cycle must not be continued anymore
QHD displays are just useless on phone screens
and I really loved WP 8.1

We will have to see about the QHD though.
G3 will show people how to power a QHD device just wait a few more weeks!

I think its useless, no matter which company use it.

I agree with a few points...
Sony's 6 month upgrade cycle should be discontinued.
QHD displays are useless according to me on smartphones, even on tablets with 7 inch screens.
Windows Phone 8.1 is good but not great.

Why's isn't there a file manager on some mobile OS?
7. LetsBeHonest (Posts: 847; Member since: 04 Jun 2013)
But most people do not care much about file manager as long as everythings are on order
But honestly as WP user i really miss a proper file manager on my phone which i have even had on my old Symbian phones
also i like to have a functionality to download any files form internet and share/send those to any devices.
i do not know whether this functionality is available on WP8.1 update or not

you mean this kind of file manager?

QHD display will be useful on +5.5 inch devices and tablets but resolution ain't everything black level, colour reproduction, brightness etc etc etc are important too...
windows phone 8.1 is so sweet a worthy long waited update with huge amount of features and will be compatible with all existing wp8 devices too...

When I have enough trouble finding 1920・1200 wallpapers already (often have to make my own stuff) I'm still uninterested in QHD (prefer WUXGA) for now. Its a nice thing to have at best for me…
There really isn't QHD content that matters, and our websites just look wretchedly fuzzy anyway due to upscaling.
On a phone, 1280・720 (800 if you have those wretched soft keys) is enough and WUXGA is good ennough for me on a tablet. Id sooner see display quality itself get better and better.

So PA, when can we expect a full WP8.1 review from you guys?

I welcome any screen improvements. QHD, 2k, 4k. Bring it. I like WP. I had a 920 for a bit. But being on T-mobile, i doubt i'll ever get to use it again as they just aren't interested in a high end WP device.
Sony isn't on a 6 month release cycle. It's a myth at this point. I dont' consider a trickle of devices in one country a success. Don't announce 3 months before your release. Bring that time within 2 weeks if not on the day of announcement, like HTC did this year. You lose too much momentum releasing do far out of the announcement. Even if they didn't have production issues it was too late. Get that device out before the big players. Be first in the flurry of new releases.

So no sense in getting the z2 , because z3 is just around the corner, sony you need just 1 solid phone for the year and you'll be fine.

Ray, what lengths would you go to rescue your beloved smartphone? Would you jump into a storm drain to rescue it? :D

As long as QHD screens are going to add needless cost to the price of phones, I'm ok with it. But just to have them, so companies can say "look at the shiny object everyone....ooooooooooooo" is not a good enough reason to mass produce a QHD screen. I just wish phones would stop getting bigger and bigger. Make a high-end phone with a "smaller" (4.5") screen. With the current PPI yields, it would not be too much of an issue to make a 1080p screen that size. If someone wants a phone the size of a tv, let them buy one. But companies need to make a worthwhile phone that actually fits into someone's hand. The S4 mini and the One mini phones are gimped, and are all but forgotten by the manufacturers after they launch. Manufacturer support only goes to the halo phones.

Why do you always look so angry in your photo?

I think Sony's 6 month cycle is a good thing as long as the updates are meaningful. For instance I have an Xperia Z Ultra. I would probably buy the new version if it had a flash for the camera and stereo speakers. It should be possible to do that upgrade in 6 months. Then 6 month later a better camera and 3 GB RAM. Then in another 6 months all that with the latest CPU.
