OnePlus is one of the biggest names out there when it comes to budget smartphone offerings. The company initially paved the way for the high-quality budget smartphone market in 2014 with the OnePlus One that cost just $299 and offered an insanely good experience for that price. OnePlus certainly has had their fair share of stumbles and hiccups along the way, and while the OnePlus 2 wasn't as well-received as its predecessor, OnePlus proved that they still had a lot of kick in them when they released the OnePlus 3 earlier this year. The OnePlus 3 is still considered to be one of the best budget smartphones on the market, but in order to make sure it can stand toe to toe with more recent competitors that have entered the market, OnePlus has replaced the OnePlus 3 with the 3T.
Although both handsets feature the exact same design (save for the new Gunmetal color option), the OnePlus 3T is superior to the OnePlus 3 in a few big areas. The processor has been bumped up to a Snapdragon 821 as opposed to the 820, the front-facing camera resolution is doubled from 8MP to 16MP, the battery's increased to 3,400 mAh compared to 3,000 mAh, and a 128GB storage option is available for those who know they'll eat through 64GB. As you'd expect though, these improvements come at a cost. The OnePlus 3T has a price tag of $439, meaning it's about $40 more than the OnePlus 3 that sold for $399.
The OnePlus 3T is more of a hardware refresh for the OnePlus 3 than a true successor, but with the OnePlus 3 no longer being sold in either the US or Europe, it's essentially replacing the OnePlus 3 as OnePlus's primary flagship handset. So, for $40 more, is the 3T a worthy upgrade from the 3?
