Plants vs Zombies 2 delayed again, but soft-launches in Australia and New Zealand
Plants vs Zombies 2 is taking the long, long road to release. When it was first announced, the release window given was spring 2013, then there was a delay which put the release at July 18th. Just last week, it was announced that the game would be pushed back to "late summer", and today PopCap has said it has to delay the release again. PopCap hasn't said exactly when the game would launch, but it has at least soft-launched the title in Australia and New Zealand.

It seems that the game itself is basically ready to go, but PvZ 2 will be a free-to-play game that will have a number of online features (but does not require an Internet connection) and in-app purchases. Because of this, PopCap wants to polish the experience and make sure that its game servers can handle the workload.  So, the company has soft-launched the title in Australia and New Zealand in order to keep the test audience small while it makes sure its servers and payment systems are all in order.

Apparently, PvZ 2 will allow for saving games to the cloud and syncing accounts across devices, as well as some streaming content, which is why the server testing is necessary. Also, PopCap is using the soft-launch to track user purchase habits and adjust the pricing of items accordingly; so, those in the early test group will see prices changing. Although PopCap wants to be clear that while there will be in-app purchases, all content, both at launch and added later, will be unlockable for free over time.
