PhoneArena Awards 2012: Best Innovation
0. phoneArena posted on 03 Dec 2012, 12:24
We have to admit it, folks, we aren't that easy to impress. We are a well-trained team of geeks that has laid hands on much more phones than an average Joe can even name. Simply put, we've all been there and we've all done that, as far as phones are concerned. Every once in a while, however, a new product or technology gets announced - something that really make us go "wow". And today, we'll talk about several such solutions: this year's PhoneArena awards begin with the Best Innovation category...

Mate I debated you, proved you wrong and then made you look the immature fan boy you are, your win comment proved this
You take everything I say and repeat it at me, you can't even come up with your own points. Your the only kid here grow up before trying to debate with us adults. So go be a fan boy elsewhere you have failed to debate to a mature level and now your throwing all you can and grasping at straws.......your no longer amusing
336. jroc74 posted on 24 Dec 2012, 08:29 0 1
You dont know the meaning of the word debate. You do know what a fanboy is, you do that very well....I proved that the other day. And you took the bait right on cue...lol. Fanboy....lol. I said you win, because I knew that would make you feel better. It always make fanboys feel better.
The name calling also proved that. You started that, not me. Fanboys resort to name calling when they cant come up with anymore points. Fanboy..
You refuse to see the points I put up. I dissected every reason you put up about the camera being innovation, why I said the camera wasnt innovation vs the projector in a phone in my huge post...and you totally dismiss it as repeating....sad. ALL that was brand new. Another trait of a fanboy.
You have that Nokia phone, so you are automatically biased towards it. I get it. The sad, sad problem is you cant see it yourself. And you are looking amazing foolish. Seriously. I am a HUGE fan of Motorola. You wouldnt be able to tell because I dont lust after it and the company and wanna argue with anyone who says somethings negatove about it or the company. You are defending that Nokia phone like you are a majority investor....lol.
I would advise you to step back, look at all your post defending that phone.....and really do some soul searching.

People just cant stand something really innovative being the top, They dont agree with pureview being the top because they have never used it, Ive used it and i know how awesome it is, Camera is one of the main things i consider when buying my phone, Ive been using Nokias and i know how good they are
310. jroc74 posted on 22 Dec 2012, 17:37 0 1
Depends on what one defines as innovative. You feel something thats improved and used by many as innovative. I feel something thats unique is innovative.
There are times when I feel something thats improved on is innovative. Just not for this list.
112. -box- posted on 03 Dec 2012, 21:23 0 5
The projector phone got #2 because there were projector phones before, but now it is actually decently executed and in a decent device. Innovative, yes, but not as amazingly so as PureView tech. Don't forget what phone won the CES and numerous other awards for its truly groundbreaking developments, and it wasn't a Samsung (this time)

totally agree with you! these people cant understand it!!
the s-features are just add ons or just some improvement...nothing so special about it or nothing that is really new...
did there crappy s3/note2/nexus4/iphone camera can take the god of all cameraphone the 808?
gosh...these people...they dont understand the basic concept of innovation!
293. lolol posted on 06 Dec 2012, 22:58 1 0
Yeah MC1123, they are just sad that samsung isnt at the top.. If somehow samsung had something like pureview , everyone will praise it im sure about that.
297. MC1123 posted on 06 Dec 2012, 23:51 0 0
lol... ikr... but the fact is that..even samsung isnt good at making a camera! a compact or a DSLR!
their new galaxy camera only excell with its optical zoom against 808PV..but it looses the picture quality that 808 PV dont! and it dont have that awesome loseless zooming and rich recording!
thats why i think only sony and nokia can make good camera phone!
and the one that is powering the iPhone's camera is a sony sensor!
298. lolol posted on 07 Dec 2012, 00:19 1 0
Totally agree with you, sammy isnt a pro like Nokia or sony at cameras :) and yes Sound recording on pureview phones is totally amazing, these people havent even seen Nokia pureview cams im sure

"Innovation is not just launching a new handset with a slightly larger screen or a marginally faster processor"
Innovation is a handset with a better camera! LOL JK
I really hope the nokia is as good as they say it is
81. jroc74 posted on 03 Dec 2012, 17:59 1 3
I didnt know that was from the article...You have a valid point and if you were joking, I agree...lol.
So...how is improved camera technology any different than new screens and new processors? Hasnt camera technology improved over the years? Like screens and processors? They have the Samsung projector phone listed...and the Nokia camera technology beats it out?
I am willing to bet if you showed both technologies to ppl, more ppl would be amazed by the projector phone.
114. -box- posted on 03 Dec 2012, 21:31 1 4
Projector phones aren't new. Being able to use a stock phone to zoom in on someone's face from across the length of a football field with no discernable loss of quality is stunning. Even more so because it is still a good phone and pocketable (though the bump is noticeable). Furthermore, you need to keep the pico lens very clean and protected otherwise that feature is useless.
294. lolol posted on 06 Dec 2012, 23:04 1 1
By the "better camera" there they mean the more pixels, not the technology. This is not only about the 808, this is about pureview, So theres a list loseless zoom, oversampling , OIS.. etc, This isnt just a improvement , its vast.. Most other companies imporve the camera by just adding a few more mega pixels..
Oh theres no point explaining to you, you are just mad that nokia is at top and sammy is 3rd.
311. jroc74 posted on 22 Dec 2012, 17:39 0 1
Has nothing to do with the brand. Dont assume because I dont agree with something that I'm a fanboy. Speaking strictly about the innovations on the list.
I actually dont like Samsung phones....something you might have known if you read thru the comments here instead of assuming.

But I thought Apple was the most innovative company on the planet!
58. kickgolfer posted on 03 Dec 2012, 15:39 5 1
that's cuz they've patent the words like "innovative" and "most"
77. lubba posted on 03 Dec 2012, 17:48 1 2
Extra screen length is not innovative, nor same design, and same UI. Apple is smart though. Why change something sells.
120. mas11 posted on 03 Dec 2012, 22:21 1 0
For Apple it's extra but for Android and WP 16:9 has been the standard
40. Fallout09 posted on 03 Dec 2012, 14:10 5 2
My nominations would be 5 row of icons, 4 inch screen, making the first smart phone to have an additional noise canceling mic and take panarama pictures.
52. Commentator posted on 03 Dec 2012, 15:05 6 0
I disagree. I think inferior mapping software, redesigned charging/data ports, and winning patent disputes should have made the list.
327. Bilpocalypse posted on 23 Dec 2012, 13:37 0 0
Yeah, but hasn't Samsung won a couple of those disputes over Apple. Maybe, it should be "starting patent disputes" instead.
116. -box- posted on 03 Dec 2012, 22:01 1 4
IPhone didn't have the first panoramic photos in a phone. That's been on other platforms for years.
Noise cancelling mics have been the norm for probably around a decade by now. The iphone just has another one up high if I recall correctly (toralling 3), finally making it not a total waste of a phone (emphasis).
4 inch screen, you're joking right?

Lumia 920 screen - ability to use a capacitive screen while wearing gloves.

Android 4.2 photosphere - also never been done before.

Well deserved, the 808 blows the Galaxy Camera to smithereens in picture quality, and it qualifies for Smart Camera too with all around better shooting performance in a much smaller body. A total winner.
2nd place I'd give to the Note 2, Airview, multi-window, smart stay (already in the S3), pretty awesome features.
64. chaoticrazor posted on 03 Dec 2012, 16:36 3 10
yes awesome features no doubt but not innovation, the note 2 is excellent but its just evolution of the first note. no innovation there.
808 well it deserves the win easily, dont see how anyone can argue against it so i agree with you on that
84. jroc74 posted on 03 Dec 2012, 18:08 5 2
The note 2 is evolution, and the camera tech in the Nokia phone isnt? Thats evolution too.
Screens with higher screen res, evolution.
Better processors, evolution.
Improved camera tech, evolution.
88. chaoticrazor posted on 03 Dec 2012, 18:21 2 7
no the innovation is the loseless zoom and oversampling, they made a way to do without an optical zoom without lose of detail and quality. this is a big leap forward. innovation
the note 2 offers slight improvements with some new (new to that phone) features. nothing innovative just evolution
i dont get why you cant accept this, lets face it if this was samsung pureview most of these comments would be just praise
98. jroc74 posted on 03 Dec 2012, 19:01 3 2
Well....for me, if it was a Samsung Pureview I still wouldnt accept it as #1. I am a Motorola fan...dont really like Samsung phones...and if it was Motorola Pureview I still wouldnt have accepted it as #1.
We just have different opinions of whats more innovative. Projector in a phone is just more innovative than improved camera technology to me.
174. Bilpocalypse posted on 04 Dec 2012, 12:43 2 3
They're talking about pureview as a whole. Not one, but two phone cameras with different innovations. First is the 808 with lossless digital zoom and and oversampling. Secont is the 920 with OIS which has absolutely never been done with a phone before.
Besides... jumping from 5mp to 8mp is a natural evolution. Jumping from 8mp (the standard for phones this year) to 41mp is not a natural evolution. That is a huge jump.
61. lyndon420 posted on 03 Dec 2012, 16:11 2 0
Whoa...apple wasn't mentioned? How is that even possible? (sarcasm)
65. redmd posted on 03 Dec 2012, 16:41 1 0
innovation is creating something never before seen. but people in this forum think of it only in hardware perspective.
67. chaoticrazor posted on 03 Dec 2012, 16:49 7 9
no people in here think it must be android dominated, everything android has to win.....sick of it
66. chaoticrazor posted on 03 Dec 2012, 16:48 7 9
nokia 808 deserves it, it basically done away with the need for a optical zoom (to an extent) with its loseless zoom, this saved battery as an optical zoom would drain the battery plus bulk. the nioless photo's look amazing
everyone crying about the note 2, seriously get a grip. its a great device but not innovative, its evolution from the note 1. theres a differance between been innovative and just been a great device. just because its a great device dont mean its innovative.
the HTC driod DNA should get a mention for setting the standard for future phone screens (said it before)
69. remixfa posted on 03 Dec 2012, 16:53 1 3
what should have been up there?
The Nexus4 - the first premium build monster phone for less than $400 unlocked at launch. That is a paradigm changer.
80. chaoticrazor posted on 03 Dec 2012, 17:58 2 9
its not innovative though...just because its a bargain doesnt make it innovation
do you think the n4 is more innovative then the 808?
93. gwuhua1984 posted on 03 Dec 2012, 18:51 2 0
In a way, it is an innovation.
It's an innovation to push phones to a lower price point. Shows that affordable phones are possible.
Seeing a Galaxy S3 having a $100 price drop is called a bargain, the S4 is something else, it's trying to set the bar... For that purpose, it's an innovation.
101. chaoticrazor posted on 03 Dec 2012, 19:03 2 8
thats not innovation thats more a sales plan, im sorry but the n4 isnt innovation. its a good phone no ones saying otherwise but innovation is pushing the boudaries of tech, incorperating otherwise seperate tech (i.e projector+phone).

That had nothing to do with Android users defending Android users. I purposely made that post very vague...... just to see something, and you took the bait. Like a stark raving fanboy.
That was folks defending ignorance, arrogance, immaturity. WOW....I havent came across someone like you in a long time on here. Folks like you are part of the reason I dont post here that much anymore. You speak about Android users not calling other Android fanboys out...what about fanboys like you? Are you a Nokia fanboy, a Lumia 920 fanboy? A WP fanboy? MS fanboy? Whatever the case...you are not rubbing ppl the wrong way for nothing.
Look in the mirror, worry about fixing whats wrong with you first before worrying about trying to fix others.

So I am about to do the mature thing...and let you have the last word....and let you feel like you are right. Thats the only way....looking at your self. I promis you...when you respond to this with something else....that will be the last response. I'm tired of fighting a losing battle. I cant worry about you and how you are, act, etc. All I can do is worry about me.
Heres to hoping to growth as a person in the future...mentally, spiritually.

Aren't there large Chinese-market "monster phones" for around $150-300? Not mainstream, but meets the criteria you put forth.
73. gazmatic posted on 03 Dec 2012, 17:18 2 0
There is nothing innovative neither about the nexus 4 nor droid dna. Xiaomi mi2 and oppo find5 had those specs and prices before. Note2 is an improved note. 808 deserves it not only because of camera but also because of audio. Nokia high end audio recording is top notch. The galaxy beam deserves to be there because it is better than the huge ass projector we use at work. Again most of samsung touchwiz software are made possible because of android. They are just fancy names for existing stuff like isight camera in apple. Android deserves to be there too because of its versatility. I would also mention hybrid laptops. They are quite nice
