PhoneArena Awards 2012: Best Innovation
0. phoneArena 03 Dec 2012, 12:24 posted on
We have to admit it, folks, we aren't that easy to impress. We are a well-trained team of geeks that has laid hands on much more phones than an average Joe can even name. Simply put, we've all been there and we've all done that, as far as phones are concerned. Every once in a while, however, a new product or technology gets announced - something that really make us go "wow". And today, we'll talk about several such solutions: this year's PhoneArena awards begin with the Best Innovation category...

Phone arena is always paid by Samsung.
It is always praising Samsung.
9. MeoCao (unregistered)
Why not praise SS after so many wonderful goodies they brought to the market?
3. ajupurohit (Posts: 6; Member since: 10 Aug 2012)
Nokia's PureView camera technology is the best :)
6. Ohrules (Posts: 314; Member since: 11 Jun 2012)
the moment i opened the article, i knew that the BEAM would be there somewhere. turns out, i was right. :)
7. MalakiMills (Posts: 256; Member since: 15 Jun 2010)
All great choices, I would have included Google Now in there as well.
8. MeoCao (unregistered)
My picks are:
1. Google Now
This innovation set new trend for future personal devices and the way people use them.
2. 808 PureView:
The future of photography.
3. SS Note 2 docking station
Putting the first nail in PC's coffin
10. androidsbiggestfan (Posts: 76; Member since: 09 Aug 2011)
100% agree, Google Now should have been #1!!! No question!
60. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Smart dock is nothing new really.
Sony made "Live dock" almost a year ago.. it doesn't have as many USB ports but it is much sleeker and far better looking :)
I agree with this chart
96. MeoCao (unregistered)
I agree that this dock is not of its kind, but I picked it for its implication.
This dock cannot be separated from JB and SS added features to the OS that make Smart dock the viable alternative to PC.

I think that Samsung projector phone shoulda been one. A projector in a phone? To me that tops improved camera technology.
I would give a nod to Google Now too, I dont know about #1 tho.
100. MeoCao (unregistered)
Phone projector is quite cool, but the implication is very limited.
288. MC1123 (Posts: 1240; Member since: 12 Nov 2012)
your #1 isnt a real innovation..due to the fact that siri make it first! but google now is the best though!
#2 is exactly correct!!!
i dont know about #3 due to the fact that samsung just make some improvements...
but need to add the puremotion tech of nokia that is present in lumia 920!
305. CanYouSeeTheLight (Posts: 817; Member since: 05 Jul 2012)
That Puremotion tech you Nokia fanboys like to rave about is just a gimick.
"There's also the higher than regular refresh rate, which should make scrolling text smoother than ever, though to be honest, we are yet to spot the real-life advantages of that." Straight from GSMArena's review.
12. chapizzo (Posts: 116; Member since: 13 Sep 2011)
i knew pureview would be top on that list and i was right.
21. Ohrules (Posts: 314; Member since: 11 Jun 2012)
i'm gonna sue you for that.
290. lolol (Posts: 64; Member since: 14 Nov 2012)
Same!! As soon as i saw the innovation part, i thought to myself oh nokia is at the top :D
15. ZayZay (Posts: 556; Member since: 26 Feb 2011)
Wait... Where is iPhone 5 with it's cool new panorama camera? I saw a commercial for it and I have never seen that on a smartphone before...
16. kickgolfer (Posts: 69; Member since: 03 Dec 2012)
welcome to 2010, we're only going into 2013 now....
17. superiorbeefjerky (Posts: 14; Member since: 18 Feb 2011)
Where's Apple stuff? I thought PA is paid by them per Android user.
23. kartik4u98 (Posts: 511; Member since: 19 May 2012)
What Apple innovated??
"Crystal SAPPHIRE LENS COVER" !!!!!!
25. Ohrules (Posts: 314; Member since: 11 Jun 2012)
how about the stupidest ways to satisfy customers?
"you're holding it wrong"
26. kickgolfer (Posts: 69; Member since: 03 Dec 2012)
iphone 5 would've been up there only if today was 2009
29. jimjam (Posts: 238; Member since: 28 Jun 2011)
Can't believe the surface touch and type covers didn't make it. Awesome innovation
50. kirholstov (Posts: 136; Member since: 28 Jun 2012)
It's not innovation. Laser projected keyboard - that's innovation
54. Commentator (Posts: 2399; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
Eh, Asus has been doing that with the Transformer for a while (plus, their keyboards have batteries in them.) I do like the design of the Surface, and my next computer will probably be a Surface Pro, but there's not all that much that stands out about it.
30. joaolx (Posts: 353; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
The pureview camera is amazing but I wouldn't call it the best innovation.
127. samystic (Posts: 190; Member since: 25 Mar 2012)
so what is your definition of innovation?
164. joaolx (Posts: 353; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
Innovation for me is seeing something new that will impact that future, that's useful and not just an upgrade from something, in this case cameras. Like you said:
"BTW PhoneArena, as far as i remember even if it failed miserably, projector on Beam is evolution and NOT innovation"
188. samystic (Posts: 190; Member since: 25 Mar 2012)
innovation is bringing something new to masses... evolution is upgrading existing things... that is layman's understanding of these terms... and since 808 not just has 41 MP sensor, it also has other technology which has been never used before... so yes it is an innovation
34. nerd_of_the_street (banned) (Posts: 6; Member since: 03 Dec 2012)
for me innovation is: introducing something remarkeble and leaving your competitor far behind.
those S-features are mehhhh, nothing special bout it... partly sofware gimmick
but a 41mpx is mind blowing comparing to the average 5-8mpx from competitor
74. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
If thats the case, you would agree with me that the Samsung projector phone shoulda been #1. To me improved camera technology is....meh. Thats called progress.
How many other phones have a built in projector?
75. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
no the projector should be #2 the camera tech your saying meh too is years ahead of the competition.
76. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Again, what other phone has a built in projector? How many phones have cameras?
If we are talking about innovation, to me a very unique feature out weighs an improved feature. And PA said its done well in that Samsung phone.
Like how many ppl felt the Retina Display was sooo innovative. But when Android and Win Mo phones had higher screen res than the iPhone 3G, 3GS, it was no big deal. Thats not innovation, thats progress.
79. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
how many phones have loseless zoom and oversampling
just been unique isnt enough it has to be a leap forward aswell to be #1. pureview takes mobile camera's forward by a big way.
why are you pushing so hard for something samsung to be top, the projector never really caught on either its still in its infancy. and before anyone says it i would love a good projector phone but right now there not ready for the mainstream
82. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Why am I pushing so hard? Its called an opinion. Why are you pushing hard for something Nokia to be top?
Its called an opinion.
And in my opinion.....the projector phone was a bigger leap than the camera technology in the Nokia phone. PA even mentioned it was done well. See, just because it didnt catch on doesnt mean it wasnt innovative. Popularity doesnt mean more or less innovative.
We just have different opinions of whats innovative.
85. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
''PA even mentioned it was done well''
well P.A said the 808 was more innovative, so why will you accept they said the projector was done well but wont accept the 808 is more innovative when they say
mainly though the 808 was something that pushed boundaries and set the bar for mobile camera's. it amazed alot of people too with the 41mp sensor
the projector phone is a great concept but needs more work to be what it undoubtably can be.
103. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
No, I cant accept it....because I dont think its more innovative than a projector in a phone....lol.
I agree with some of the article, not all of it.
292. lolol (Posts: 64; Member since: 14 Nov 2012)
lol jroc74 , who uses a projector more than a camera on a phone? you really havent used a pureview camera.. beam might be innovation for you, but i guess a majority loves a good camera like pureview.. even surveys show that 85% of smartphone users use the camera the most.
309. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Again, not talking whats used the most. Just what I feel is more innovative. I feel a unique feature is more innovative than an improved one.
312. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
losless zoom, over sampling and almost noiseless photos not unique? the fact your phone can take full res 34 and 38mp photo's not unique? having a 41mp sensor on your phone not unique? the fact even with that big sensor its still not about the megapixel count its how it uses them.
been the best cameraphone and by miles not innovative enough? just accept what many others admit the 808 is innovation and will hopefully pave the way for even more advances in mobile camera tech (started with the 920 already). this isnt just a one off innovation its started a chain of what could be incredible mobile cameras
313. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Thats all well n good....but its not more unique than a projector in a phone. Name another phone that has a projector in it. Now name another phone that has a camera in it.
314. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
yeah there are other projector phones, most been chinese unknown things but they exist.
Spice M9000 Popkorn
theres 2 for you, so blows your unique argument out the water.
now you name another phone with lossless zoom, and oversampling. or another phone capable of taking full res 34-38mp photo's
i shall wait for your response lol
315. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Camera vs projector:
Better camera specs...evolution
400x800 screen res vs 1080p screen res....evolution
single core cpu vs dual core cpu...evolution
We are never gonna see eye to eye on this...
You are speaking of improved specs.. . Those phones you listed....have never heard of them. And most ppl havent. The specs you listed for the camera.....never in a phone....but in cameras.
Unique. I will stick to the projector shoulda been #1 vs improved camera specs.
319. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
ok now your just ignoring the fact i proved your precious projector phone isnt unique and been a petty crying fanboy
the fact you still think its unique shows you never read my comment, instead you just thumbed me down and repeated yourself. you havent answered anything put to you
one more time slowly for your little mind
lossless zoom on a phone-unique
oversampling on a phone- unique
able to take 34-38mp full res photo's on a phone- unique
a 41mp sensor on a phone-unique and still pretty unbelievable
this is beyond evolution, its unique and as you seem to think unique is key then ive proved the pureview is number 1 on the list and rightly so
now your projector phone
here are 2 other projector phones:
Spice M9000 Popkorn
so your precious phone isnt unique
are you getting it now?
322. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
1080p screen in TV's.... now in phones.....screens were 400x800 in phones.....innovation or evolution
Improved camera tech in cameras.... now in phones.....innovation or evolution.
Single core, dual core, quad core in PC's...now in phones...phones had single core now are up to quad core....innovation or evolution.
Whatever you feel is innovation...you will always pick that.Thats fine.
Projector in a phone.....innovation or evolution. I even gave you a legitimate reason why we dont agree on this....and you dont accept that and you opinion just has to be right and resort to name calling...classic.
If it wil make you feel better, the projector isnt innovative and PureView is. Happy now? BTW....fanboys resort to name calling....in case you didnt know.
323. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
What I'm about to do is show you why someone might not agree with this....please pay attention. (I wasnt gonna stoop to your level of name calling and condescending....but whatever, dont care now. Do you even know what condescending means....probably not. )
"one more time slowly for your little mind
lossless zoom on a phone-unique
oversampling on a phone- unique
able to take 34-38mp full res photo's on a phone- unique
a 41mp sensor on a phone-unique and still pretty unbelievable
this is beyond evolution, its unique and as you seem to think unique is key then ive proved the pureview is number 1 on the list and rightly so"
Now watch what happens when someone doesnt agree with this.....slowly for you....
Lossless zoom.....but wasnt...zoom....already in camera phones? A great majority of them? So...introduce lossless and now all of a sudden its a great thing? If thats what you feel, so be it.
Oversampling.....isnt that like a camera feature....like zoom, grey scale, white balance, mega pixel size, etc. You obviously didnt read my post that mentioned that.
Take a higher resolution picture on a phone and better camera lense...wasnt this done thru the years? On lots of phones? Did it get better from the beginning of phones, smartphones, yes or no?
Thats why I call all that evolution, not innovation. Just my opinion, no need for name calling.
Projector on a phone......you mention 2 obscure phones. Samsung did it right. Thats why I call that innovation.
Learn to understand....ppl that dont agree with you arent fanboys. For the umpteenth time...slowely....I...dont ....even ......like ....Samsung ....phones...Talking strictly about whats more innovative. You feel its the Nokia camera, I feel its the projector in a phone. We can agree to disagree. But you have some very fanboyish ways....look in the mirror before salling someone lese a fanboy or troll.
324. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Please read this article and especially the comment sections. I'm not the only one who feels this way. Its called ....an....opinion.....
we believe all camera makers should consider oversampling as an integral part of future camera designs
Um, Isn't that what most camera makers already do when you select a lower-than-max resolution?
To the best of my knowledge, more or less. What they don't do is design around the idea of capturing at a lower-than-max resolution as the *default use case*.
THIS is why I call it evolution.....and not innovation.
316. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
You are speaking about improved specs...I'm speaking of an entire spec all its own. Zoom exists in camera phones, losses didnt. Oversampling.....might as well lump that in with white balance, cropping, grey scale, etc.
317. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
I think whats happening....you must value the camera features in a phone. Or you may choose/not choose a phone based on the camera. I dont. The camera is the least used feature on my phones.
If thats the case.....this will be a never ending argument.
318. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Like I said....do we say single core vs dual core vs quad core is innovative vs a projector in a phone? Do we say 400x800 vs 1080p screen res is innovative vs a projector in a phone? You keep mentioning improved specs....I'm talking about an entire feature.
We have different ideas of whats innovative in this case. It is what it is.
320. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
mate last time as your so dense its unbelievable the projector phone isnt unique so it slams your whole point.
you really love the projector phone dont you, even android fans have admitted the 808 wins this. your a seriously bad fanboy if you can just accept it. you cant even put a reasonable case together for your point its just senseless dribble
321. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Dude....stop labeling everybody a fanboy because they dont agree with you. The more you post....the more fanboyish you look.
You ignore why I think you say the camera in the Nokia is best innovation and why I think the projector is best innovation. I have never used either.....its all opinion.
Yours will never change, mine will never change. I dont have to be a fanboy becuse I dont agree with you. Learn what an actual debate is....then we can talk.
325. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
ok lets end you for good as your just as dense as usual
first the innovation ''debate'' that you couldnt hold up in and failed at bringing real basis to your comments. your whole underlining point was its unique. i proved there were other phones that do the same and you ignored this and repeated yourself. you basically then spat your dummy out as you were proved wrong and now are trying to pull something back. your very transparent.
second you never stated it as your opinion instead you flooded the comment section stating it was fact the projector phone is more an innovation. if you do this be prepared to be questioned and debated. cant handle it dont state obvious nonsense. in the end i basically showed why the 808 won and your projector phone did not (apart from the fact it was the first). you just couldnt admit you were wrong to say about it been unique. you just ignored the parts that proved you wrong....thats what fanboys do
so when you can have a real debate and not throw your dummy out when you are proved wrong please come back with something that has a real basis. until then how about you try and be open minded and give credit where its due
328. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
You fail to acknoledge why I thin the projector is..... more ........unique.....
I have....constantly......stated it was my opinion....what the hell are ytou reading, or not reading???
I see what this is.....you live to be right in the internet....lol. Wow...
Have a good day.....I dont indulge fanboys. And right on cue....the name calling and talking down. You win...happy now? I bet you didnt even read that Ars article I posted...lol.
329. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
No you keep on moving the goal posts, since I proved its not unique your now saying more unique lol tragic mate
Your the fan boy and a real bad one at that. And there's no win, did you see this as a competition sad .
You still haven't answered anything I put to you. Have a good one try to learn how to answer what's asked of you next time
330. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
I said you win, you should be happy.
You win, you win, you win, give it a rest aleady. Nokia's camera is the best innovation of all time....projectors in a phone suck. You are not a fanboy, you are the best person in the world. You proved me wrong, you proved everything right.
See? This is called moving on. You win...this is my cue to unfollow from this article....and I know in the future whenever I see you post....what to do.....
331. jroc74 (Posts: 4720; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
For the record...I did answer your questions....you are just turning a blind eye to what I posted....thats what fanboys do. I even gave you evidence why ppl would think the Nokia camera isnt all that innovative vs a projector in a phone.
We will never agree on this matter.....but I'm a fanboy because I dont agree with you. .. WOW .You are either real young.....or need to learn what a debate, opinion is.
I ...never...called you names....never talked down to you until you did. You are a seriously delusional fanboy. But I know how to handle folks like you. I see why you are acting the way you are now....you have that Nokia phone.....lol I never had that Samsung projector phone. Now....whose the fanboy....lol.
