And LTE is not a factor since it isn't available yet in most of the world.

Really thought the gs2 would win it and like many think it deserves...many others sites have declared the s2 as phone of the year already and considering its been on the market for 8+months already and to still be ranked as one of the best is a feat in it self...honestly the only thing nexus has going foe it is ics and he display other than the s2 is superior in every way...removable memory, better camera.and also has the exynos chip which is held in high regards....

GS2: Deserved it for sure. A total domination since its release.
Nexus: Despite its excellent specs and features, it's still a little odd to give the best phone award of 2011 to a phone that has not even been released until the very end of the 2011.
4s: minor improvement from its predecessor, yet some people are willing to spend hundreds on a product if it comes with a bitten apple logo on.

Why don't you read the article it says why.

I can explain what I like about it:
How about siri or the app store or the retina display or the excellent camerea or itunes or how about its design or its ease of us. What about the quality materials its made out of or its excellent battery life. How about it excellent calling quality or its great support from apple. Maybe its the choice of cases avaliable or maybe its the gaurenteed future updates. Not saying there werent other good phones but the iphone is a top phone and deserving of second place.

If you take out your text, "How about siri," you could have fooled me for a review on the iphone 4. Which, at the time was groundbreaking, yes, but not a refresh more than a year later winning an award for 2nd place.

I almost feel like this is saying, hey folks we changed the tail lights on this here car model, oh and added voice navigation this year, so yes, of course we deserve 2nd place for "Best Car of the Year."

Siri? OK. I'll give you that.

App store? Android market + infinite number of 3rd party sites
Retina display? No pixelization on the SGS2 due to the SA Plus display, despite the lower res. I've seen in in my own eyes. In addition - SA Plus blows the living hell out of LCD.

Excellent camera? Same can be said on the SGS2

iTunes? Why on earth would any sane person want to LIMIT themselves into just ONE method of transferring stuff from the phone to the PC and vice versa? Android has DoubleTwist, BT file transfer and many many many other ways of communication with the PC. Oh you got the Appstore on your PC? Well I've got the Android market from ANYWHERE on the internet.

Design? Considering the fact that the SGS2 packs much more powerful hardware, a larger battery a better screen, and more connectivity ports - it's a damn good product design-wise.

Quality materials? Really? I kinda heard that having a phone with GLASS on it's back side isn't very quality-like at all. You know - if you drop it and stuff.

Calling quality? prove that SGS2's is somehow inferior.

Great support from Apple? What support? The fact that they didn't implement Siri on A4 devices? OR the fact that they cut native photo editing options out of iOS 5 for the 3GS? Or the iOS 4.0 fiasco on the iPhone 3G?

The choice of cases available? Are you kidding me?!

Guaranteed future updates? Really? Look at the iPhone 2G - the original iPhone. Same hardware as iPhone 3G. But for it to run iOS 4? Noooo. You gotta give em their cash to upgrade. On Android, however - you can run ANY firmware you want, install ANY custom rom you like. Heck, even the G1 could run ICS for god's sake. Yes it was clunky - but it could! just to prove a point.

The iPhone doesn't deserve a millionth of the attention and praise it's given. And no bloody "revolutionary" feature like a stolen app - Siri for example - is going to change that!

There - I said it all. :)

I dusagree on many aspects. I can't go thru it all due to the fact im busy lately but here is somw things to consider. Before I start please try and be open minded I respect the android platform and realize its faults and strengths. Try to take a subjective look at the iphone and what its trying to accomplish. Well first of all the many fault with your argument is yes android does have some of things I mentioned but its not as polished. For example the android market has alot of junk inside and is hard to navigate. Where as the app store is clean and simple. Itunes is again easy to work and alot of variety of content. Another thing I will talk about is support. Since there isn't fragmentation in ios you get updates faster including security updates. Older hardware is even supported in older phones. To respond to the fact the iphone 4 had alot of these features well sure it did but that doesn't make the i4s any worse compared to the competition. Plus there are some differences such as improved attena/proccesor/camera/siri/radio. This is a more substential update then other phone gets look at the bionic to razr for example. Is it not a positive for the razr the web top dock because the bionic has it? I think it is still a positive. So as far as best phone goes the fact the iphone4 is great doesn't make the i4s les great. Another treason you can add the i4s as second best phone is gamming. It has a great gpu with a great app store. Along with the screen its a top mobile gaming phone.

biophone - I was open minded in my previous post.

As for yours:

Android is not polished - true. But only when it comes to OEM versions. You have an Android phone? Good. Out there, somewhere on the web lies a custom rom that fits to your phone and your respective tastes\needs perfectly like a glove. That's the whole beauty of it.

Android market hard to navigate? Well don't use it. You got yourselves a lot of other 3rd party sites, with top 20 top 50 top games top apps, etc etc. There are zillion of sites dedicated to finding apps that you might want\need based on several categories. If the Android market wouldn't be as great as it is now - it wouldn't have been the second most popular application store, now would it?

iTunes might be easy to work with - but if you happen to be near any other computer - and you don't have WiFi nearby - and you want to download an app which weights more than 20MB - forget it. Not so with Android.

Support - I have brought the example of the iPhone 2G. You so far has brought none. Just because existing phones get slightly faster fixes and patches than official Android OEM versions doesn't really matter - because you don't have to use an Android OEM version. Heck if you know of a security hole - chances are someone too does. And if he or she is kind enough - they will just tell you to go to file X on your OS, and change line 566435 from 0 to 1 - or something along the line. This is Open Source. You don't depend on one single company to provide support for your products.

You are comparing the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S to the Bionic and Razr. This is absolutely wrong since Android works differently. In the Android ecosystem a phone which gets released after another certain phone - is not necessarily better than the previous one in all aspects. Especially as we are talking about phones from different collections. The Bionic and the RAZR have NOTHING in common aside from the fact that they are both made by Moto. It's a different product line entirely. Each one focuses on different aspects.

As for the iPhone 4S GPU - you might be right there - but gaming is just one single use out of many - for a mobile phone.

Now I never said that the iPhone 4S is a bad phone. It's a great phone. I got an iPhone 4 - I know. But the 4S isn't nearly as good as the SGS2 is - because of the reasons I wrote about earlier. And most importantly - as I said - it doesn't really deserve all the praise and noise people make out of it. Huge amount of great phones out there. A lot of them are better than the iPhone 4S. Some of them even better than the SGS2.

The galaxy nexus and the iPhone 4S don't deserve to be here, the SGSll deserves the top spot, follows by probably the Motorola Droid RAZR, with the SonyEricsson Xperia Arc for its great design. All the Nexus brought was ICS, although that's it.

The galaxy nexus came first because of its neat desighn and 720p and because of a huge step forward with ICS so yea it did get a bit help there but its performance is much better than SGSII because it doesn't have that crappy UI touchwiz. And the Iphone 4s did deserve to be second even though it did have the same design of the iphone 4 it still is a bit ahead of android because of its massive app store and great screen and its great performance

We are talking about the present and not what is going to happen and even removing ICS its still got that great screen. Just because you bought the SGS II doesn't make it the best phone. and from hardware specs the SGS II beats the Galaxy Nexus at camera but looses at updates, Screen(which for some reason isn't important for you), NFC, barometer(which helps looking on GPS faster) and ever thing else is the same so yea the galaxy nexus
wins overall. Why don't you think before you write.

Eh, I'm not a fan of the "Motorola Bulge" where the camera is. It may be thin, but the weight isn't distributed evenly, which increases the risk of it being dropped imo. That's a lot bigger deal to me than it being a millimeter thinner than the GS2.

Can someone answer this question? No knock against the GN, but considering the hardware on the other phones, the upcoming CES, and the fact that almost all new smartphones will come with ICS AND current smartphones (SGS2, Razr, Rezound, etc) will be getting the ICS update in 2012, what does the GN offer, besides ICS, that makes it a "MUST GET NOW"?

I have to say that the nexus deserves to be up there for quarter 4 of 2011. I have ICS running on my evo 4G, and it is indeed a marvelous update. My camera isn't even working on this build and I am keeping it as my daily because it is that much of an improvement. So I can understand how it took top honors.

With that being said 2011 was a huge year for Samsung devices, mainly the Galaxy S2. I think it should of been number 1, due to the improvements it made on how Android devices are supposed to be....I really can't wait to see what next year brings. ICS will rule them all :D

How on earth is the iPhone 4s not 1st? Just to get the Droid trolls off your back. You gave an award to a phone that has not even been released yet! May as well give it to the iPhone 5.

Why would you give an award to just another cheap plastic virus and crapware infested droid phone? Because they bumped up the cpu speed a notch - its still unresponsive and unstable even compared to last years iPhone 4. When are people going to stop grading on CPU speed - PC user's figured it out many years ago. Android is just clunky, sluggish and unstable compared to the iPhone. Its not even a good ripoff.

The vast majority of smartphone users, by Nielson poll ratings of the most popular OS in the US, shows that the average user is still buying the "clunky, sluggish and unstable" Android.

And to wit, I have asked it before, and I will ask it again, if you look at the other phones here, and the gravity of what the award for "phone of the year" should be, I am still left wondering why it should be considered the best phone this year. Aside from pure sales numbers, and the addition of Siri, which the jury is still out on, what makes this any different for any reason than essentially giving the award to the iphone 4?

The iphone 4 was definately the phone of the year when it was released, and I can honestly say that without reservation.

iFans be grateful PhoneArena gave the second place to the iPhone. For me it could be a runner-up within the top 10, not even the top 5. My statements about it:

1. iPhone design, elegant? It's a matter of taste, I loved its design in 2010, now it's boring. Made of cheap glass makes it better than sturdy plastic? I don't think so.
2. Dual-core? First it was not an innovation at all; secondly, iOS is a very basic mobile OS, no third-party widgets, no real background processing (except for music and downloading), so the benefit of a dual core iPhone is minimal.
3. Flourishing ecosystem, tons of apps? Yeah sure but the average Joe won't even use a quarter of the 500,000+ apps. Besides, the true benefit of that growing ecosystem goes to Apple's bank accounts in order to fund patent trolls.

So what we have left: a phone that used to be the greatest but now has been superseeded by many other phones not only one as PA wants us to believe.

IMO, it should be 1) SGN (ICS, 720p SuperAMOLED), 2) HTC Rezound [720p screen, Beats (for what its worth), HTC (most trusted manufacturer)], 3) RAZR (thinnest smartphone)
SGS2 just doesn't have a good enough screen to play high-res games on places like Onlive like the 300+ PPI screens of the SGN, Rezound, and even (gasp) the iPhone 4/4s. (Btw, if you don't already have Onlive, GET IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! It is the future of all gaming)
iPhone 4s didn't have any innovation what-so-ever, their main selling point is that the phone talks back (which is still in beta), hardware and software that Android and Windows has dominated, and a bitten off apple logo.

I would agree to most of your comment but have been trying all the new phones to decide my next phone that i will be buying within the next 2 weeks. As for the HTC Rezound while the screen looks nice thats about all it has going for it. the beats only work for the google music app. which is likely rarely used by most compared to other apps like Pandora, iheartradio and slacker. so IMO putting the Razr well ahead of the Rezound

The 4s should have been tied for fifth with the Amaze IMO. The dual core and better camera keeps it competitive even without a new design. But second place was being really generous. I'm sure many disagree, but Siri is still just an app to me. I've had it, used it, and liked it before the 4s came out, but there is very little difference in the Siri I see today. It's like adding Angry Birds Seasons as a "New Feature", then saying its better than the other phones that has the original Angry Birds. That isn't enough to make it a runner up for best phone at all!

Laughable! I phone 4s better than Galaxy s2.....hahaha what a pathetic observation. I have them both. first lets just establish the fact that the I phone is still 3g. I have the Galaxy s 2 Skyrocket which is 4g LTE on ATT. Not to mention its on a 4.5inch super amoled plus display so when im downloading, watching movies, browsing the web, and using apps the overall experience is so much better, the I phone 4s is clearly inferior. Smart phones are basically multimedia devices the send and receive data. Essentially thats what a smart phone is, so basically why would i want to use 3g speeds when I can use 4g speeds? Why dosent iphone have an attachment option on its email client, pretty dumb to me. I like the fact that android gives you more options in regards to damn near everything. I can download torrents on my Galaxy s 2, cant do that on my Iphone. I like the fact that the galaxy s2 has more than the one home button. Bottom-line the galaxy s 2 is just smarter. I tunes keeps you stuck. I cant drag files from the iphone on to my computer, create or download free ring tones. Personalization and options are fare superior on galaxy s 2. Bottom line just the fact that one device is 4g lte and the other is 3g basically eliminates any debate. really there is to many things that I like about my galaxy s2 to keep going. I phone 4s is cool but inferior to the Galaxy s 2 brand

What a bunch of butthurt nancies. Why care so much about somebody's opinion? Your choice was heard in the reader awards with the GS2 beating the 4S so why don't you take that victory instead of whining in another thread.
