Soft bricks you can recover from. Be it a fix via Odin, a back up or factory reset, it can be fixed. Hard bricks are permanent and have no fix. Just left with a very expensive paper weight.

well its a bit old news for me ...and btw its not only the galaxy note ...the SII has the same brick bug in \specific units with older chips " that makes most of them "

and :/ as far as i know ...all stock ICS kernel have this bug ... the only safe kernels as in XDA site is CM kernels .not sure if there any thing new about this as i haven't checked for a while now ...and btw that applies to flashing packages using CWM too

Not yet....samsung promised newer kernel versions to fix this but nothing so far .....ive been waiting forthem or the final CM mod .... Whatever comes first ill use it till then im afraid to flash any thing on my phone...i wont risk getting a brick.....

HTC is better than Samsung because older devices like desire HD , Incredible S , Desire S got ICS with sense 3.6 while original galaxy s is still stuck on Gingerbread with touchwiz 3.0

My Galaxy Note still runs on Gingerbread and I can't decide what custom rom to put on it. I keep looking on XDA but I can't find anything good enough. Any help?

put a custom rom on it.
everything is better than touchwiz.
don't flash a "leaked" build on it though. first they have touchwiz, next, they might brick your device
go to xda, try a rom, if you don't like it you can always go back to your old gb
try it I promise you will like it

try to do a factory reset and you will see the problem

Yea this bug materialized initially on leaked ICS builds a couple of months ago and was experienced soon there after by some really unfortunate folks on XDA who installed the leaks. I was lucky enough to not have been affected, but it effectively stopped me in my tracks from installing custom ROMs for quite a while.

My basic understanding is that there is a workaround for the bug that removes some code that activates an erase command in the firmware. Therefore, CM9 is supposedly free from the bug and I have been running CM for about a month and have wiped system/data etc multiple times safely and my phone is still running like a top.

Seriously Samsung? XDA member Chainfire reported this issue to Samsung and I believe they responded with a statement that they're working on it. This is why I trust my phone with respected developers at XDA more than the manufacturers.

this may be an inconvenience but this is actually pretty lucky for them because Samsung will surely pull out the stops to appease them for this huge slip. "pick out whatever you want pal! Galaxy S III? you got it! we've kept you waiting long enough for ICS. oh you had a $40 case for your Note that's useless to you now? here's a $40 credit."

nah, they're actually pretty good when it comes to that kind of thing. people had chances to get 2 cases for antenna gate and they did that 1st gen iPod Nano Replacement Program which i actually participated in and got a free 6th Gen Nano. i sold that thing. xD

they just rolled out the ICS for my Galaxy Tab 7.7, but I am sticking it out with Honeycomb for a while until I am confident that no such issues like this ever happen.

it won't happen
only happens for devices with touchwiz 4 firmware (ie galaxy s II, galaxy R, note, advanced etc) because they use similar firmware
7.7 uses firmware similar to what was found on the galaxy tab 2

Archos updated the Archos G9 101 tablet with ICS and it was buggy as heck, but then it updated again, and has been pretty awesome ever since.
