O2 to launch new HTC smartphone without a wall charger, says most people don't need one
0. phoneArena 26 Sep 2012, 07:22 posted on
While some manufacturers render existing accessories obsolete by introducing a new dock connector for their phones, other companies are trying to reduce the amount of waste their products generate in a very unusual, yet sensible way. The company in question is U.K. wireless carrier O2, which will soon launch a new flagship smartphone made by HTC. What's interesting about the launch is that the HTC handset in question will not come bundled with a wall charger...

Just checked, I have one in my backpack for while I'm at school, 2 by the bed for me and the wife, 1 at my desk, and 1 by the couch. Since we have so many, why not? Also, we didn't buy a single one. They all came with the phones we bought at the time. Edit~another 1 in the car.

Same here, I have a least 5-6 scattered around that I do use plus 1-2 extra that I don't use for just in case. All came with the phone that was purchased at the time. Now whenever I sell my old phone I give the original cable to increase the value of it and to make sure my buyer has the complete package.

I have a good amount as well and only use one. But they still need to include them for new smartphone user though.

Good move IMO. Will actually help reduce e-waste.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I have so many spare cables and wall connectors laying around my house i won't need another one for years.

I hope apple dare to do the same with lightning cable xD

I really hate it when carriers pull crap like this...You don't presume what customers need or not, they tell you what they don't want and then you take it away. Just like how we DON'T want carrier bloat.
In Singapore, the 3 main carriers just cut down our data package from 12GB to a pathetic 2GB without any price decrease. And their justification for doing that? "We believe most customers do not exceed the 2GB mark."

What does that have to do with usb power chargers? I've got like four of them around the house with an extra one for when I got places that's a two port.
Data plans and this is like trying to compare an apple and chilli pepper...you just can't. lol thought I was going to say an orange didn't you!

are you lost? this is not a thread for ranting about data plans. Carriers have nothing to do with USB chargers being included with HTC devices.

Not a bad idea, but on the other had chargin via a pc usb port is far slower than a wall charger... just saying...
11. adelta90 (Posts: 63; Member since: 14 Sep 2012)
Actually it wont be slower, USB has 4 pins, 2 for data and 2 for power
So the USB cable will make use only of the 2 power pins
the data lines wont be in use and so the phone will charge normally
14. Captain_Doug (Posts: 747; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
I know my laptop charges it slower but I agree that on most pc's, that is truth.
17. nicholassss (Posts: 348; Member since: 10 May 2012)
my laptop charges my phone slower and if its completely dead its a crap shoot if it actually starts charging it or not.

idk, a lot of articles i read said that pc usb ports provide only 500ma of power ulike wall chargers that supply 1500ma or something like that. Im no pro but i can confirm that it takes more that twice the time to charge my lumia 710 over a pc than over the charger (i do this every night since my pc is closer than a wall socket...)

Just send me a wall plug , got so many usb cables without the plug part
10. nicholassss (Posts: 348; Member since: 10 May 2012)
I try to keep one everywhere I am on the daily. Since i blow through battery so fast, I have one at bothe jobs, one in my living room, one in my bedroom, one in my car, one at my girlfriends house, and one in my back pack.
oh the life of a phone nerd.
so anyway, I totally get what their doing here, ha.

Pure f***kery... I don't think decisions like this will help them get back on top. lol
I work on Verizon and a lot of customers do need new chargers. I'm sure some of us phone nerds have 1,000,000 to spare, but I don't think the all of the general public work like us.
29. 305Bucko (Posts: 506; Member since: 07 Aug 2011)
if you work "on" Verizon then its probably not the english speaking department.
secondly, we are talking about USB chargers here not lighting cables,,, whoever doesnt have one of those sitting around the house should just buy one.
I personally think the attention should go to the device, chargers are a dime a dozen

I apologize for my mistake, misspelling words and all. As I 'm sure it never happens to you. Though you hardly punctuate or capitalize.
None the less, I see your opinons differ from mine. You feel that customers should just buy their own chargers. Who cares?
Why reply to me?
32. cripton805 (Posts: 907; Member since: 18 Mar 2012)
I agree with you. Obviously these people are morons. 70% have chargers? Well that leaves 30%. Which is a whole lot of people. Especially when those people are very likely to be NEW customers to the product line. Which is probably why they don't have a charger to begin with. It could also damage your phone if it isn't a cutoff charger. Also, they might use that against you for warranty purposes.
(only supposed to be used with HTC products or PC)
General public is what sells. Nerds will buy their fanboy products.

I believe most non-collectors will agree with what they are doing. I have about 6 micro-usb chargers and I use only 2 of them while the others are still brand new.
16. ebunny89 (Posts: 10; Member since: 07 Jun 2012)
What about all the customers who have old phones that don't have micro usb ports. You're putting more on the consumer to buy. Sounds like an Apple move to me.
18. nwright94 (unregistered)
I can imagine the comment section if apple said the same lol
24. Brewski (Posts: 119; Member since: 05 Jun 2012)
You know this won't be an Apple phone, they use the industry standard-Micro USB.
19. FireDragon (Posts: 107; Member since: 13 Nov 2009)
Leaving out charger is I think good. I recently bought a budget tablet Ainol and it comes without charger. The problem is, I didn't mind it at first but since I don't have any extra charger I oftenly feel I needed one.
So what I am thinking that companies who are adapting this trend, should keep an option if user want to buy a charger they just give it seperately at the time of purchase. This will surve both purposes.
20. timtimity (Posts: 196; Member since: 13 Aug 2012)
With Samsung and Nokia developing wireless charging phones they'll soon be no reason to have a charger in the box if you've got a wireless charger at home.
22. steven252000 (Posts: 64; Member since: 10 Feb 2010)
Hmmm......what's next cell phone sold with no damn battery? They are just getting cheaper and cheaper. What if you sold your previous phone charger and all? Just include the charger people.
26. jibraihimi (Posts: 657; Member since: 29 Nov 2011)
On second thought I think they might be hinting at some new phone from HTC which is having wireless charging like S3 and Lumia 920...............
