A curious story is unfolding - the two biggest US carriers seem to have their employees discouraging users from buying the iPhone…

That has nothing to do with it as people who buy the 32GB and 64GB, respectively, receive far less of a subsidy than those who purchase the 16GB and the cost to make each variant is basically the same as memory is not a cost iGauging component. The reason people are steered away from iPhone in todays market is more like the following scenario:
1. The consumer inevitability always comes back complaining that she can't do anything on the iPhone.
2. Complaints are also abundant with regard to slow-ass Data services on 3G versus the "cheapest" 4G LTE phone that they've been able to compare it with and, therefore, a carrier would rather now point out all of those iWeaknesses that were once the toast of the town.
3. A lot of people also return iPhones because they can't figure out how the hell to use LooneyTunes without their heads exploding and, returned devices are big inventory losses that affect the iBottom line.
4. iPhone users now need iMagnifying glasses just to see their screens and some are also returning their iPhones because they are now embarrassed to pull out their iPhones in public, especially at parties, in a world of 4.3" to 4.8" truly smartphones aka Androids; the average of the two (4.3 & 4.8) being 4.575".
5. One of the main reasons for carrier "dissuasion" is the fact that people nowadays what to personalize their smartphones and not have the same ole' phone everyone else has, with the same ole' home screen and, with the same ole' apps' in the same ole' place; they can not personalize their iPhones and carriers know this.
Moreover, iApplaud these carriers because they are being honest and upfront with their potential customers and aren't iMiSleading them anymore.
FYI: Regarding personalization, I wanted to put my own ringtones on my lovely iPhone 4S and it was an absolute b¡tch (but, iDiDiT!). Now, I wish iCould change up that stupid home screen (WITHOUT HAVING TO JAILBREAK)!

VZW's LTE network is increasing its footprint almost every month. VZW would be bigger fools than RIM and Nokia combined to not stress their LTE network in their sales pitch. If a phone is returned, all the effort of setting up the account, converting the phone book, etc. is for naught. When co-workers who own iPhones see how fast LTE is on my RAZR (doing real-world things, like downloading an e-mail attachment that is 2+Mb in size), they turn green with envy. Expect more 'diversion' until Apple releases an LTE-capable phone.

Doug, you are iFlat wrong. Even if Apple were to release a 4G LTE iPhone in September (as is rumoured), it won't change the fact that you still can't download anything (unless you do it through LooneyTunes) and you still can't customize the thing without your head exploding. My favorite is, that even with the rumored larger screen, it will still seem small by today's standards.
You are 109% correct though, going through the trouble of setting up iPhone activations would seem like a major loss in $$ and time when they are inevitably iReturned.

How do you get to your conclusion that the e-mail client on the iPhone can't download an attachment? My co-workers do it all the time (at least Excel spreadsheets). They just get frustrated when they see me finish a reply and continue with my Lunch while they are waiting for the file download to complete. The example I am referring to involves an iPhone 4S with iOS v. 5.something.

So now we know - Apple's iPhones are good for consumers, Android phones for profit... Explains a lot. And still, iOS took away 4 percent market share from Android in the US. Impressive. Shame on the carriers who leave consumers no choice to sell phones for crapware and profit...
Still, iPhone 5 with 4G will set things to the right place.

Don't over excite yourself, Sparky. This story and the ATT story are pure BS.
Here's the real story. Android and Samsung are expected to have a huge third quarter, due to the Galaxy S3 (you remember it, right? Biggest presales for any phone ever). So naturally, iOS fans have an innate need to rationalize this, but the usual excuse, that people are just waiting for the next iPhone, won't fly because the surge by Android will probably be much larger than ever before.
So, they need to come up with another reason, but one that is difficult to disprove. They can't claim it is because of a shortage, there are iPhones on shelves everywhere. Tada! It's because the salespeople are tricking all these people who really want iPhones into buying Android phones.
This has a double shot of endorphins for them, because it can also feed their delusion that everyone copies Apple, so all these folks think they're getting iPhones anyway.

Cool story, bro. iPhone sales even now are 2,6 times that of Galaxy S3 (when the iPhone 5 has yet to make an apperance and 4S bored even the insanest of iSheeps, while S3 was revealed in late Q1-early Q2) and the US as strong economy of tech-aware users is Apples stronghold. 15% have said they are likely to buy an iPhone 5 vs. 2% of Galaxy S3 in a random poll.
Keep thumbing down facts and making fandroid-excuse-theories.

Phonearena posting somthing this week saying how android devices worldwide are holding 65percent of sales for smart phones. that does sound like apple is doing better to me too

Well i heard a while back from a friend of mine who works at a verizon store because they got paid more to sell android phones and the store makes more those get pushed over iphones. Thats all this comes done to the other reasons are afterthoughts. I don't feel bad for apple there doing just fine.

My local Verizon store must not have gotten the memo. To the left and right of the main entrance there are 4 posters. 1 for the iPhone, 1 for the iPad, 1 for the Droid Razr Maxx, and 1 for the LTE network. So, the largest portion of their front signage goes to Apple products.
Upon walking in, next to a couple of sign-in kiosks, is an accessory rack. On that rack is accessories for iOS devices only.
After that, the first actual handset display area is... yep, you guessed it. The iPhone display. After that you have your high-end LTE Droids, then your lower-to-mid range Android phones. Come to think of it, I don't believe I even saw a Galaxy Nexus on display. Followed by your feature phones, then Windows phones. On the far wall is the iPad display. I mean tablet display. It's so easy to get confused what with a sales rep there constantly showing off an iPad to passers by.
And then of course, there my experience with Brandon. The sales rep who tried to sell me on an iPhone because, "It's the iPhone. It's hot." when I asked why I should use my last New Every Two upgrade on the iPhone over the phone I was looking at at the time.

That I highly doubt. Alot of established, hardcore, dedicated, fan boy, diehard, Apple fans out there. In the millions! They'll camp outside an Apple store for days for the iPhones debut. Look at siri, they glamoured over it and made the next big thing on the iPhone, yet I never saw anyone use it. lolzzzz! They'll try to sell as many iPhones as they can and the reps don't even have to try. All the diehards and wannabes will want one.

Perhaps, I don't know how AT&T or Verizon compensation structures are setup. I know Sprint's compensation structure is even across the board. Whether they sell you a cheap flip phone or an iPhone, the rep gets paid the same.

Verizon Rep here. With a third party, not a corporate location. I will admit up front - yes, I do get paid more to sell certain models of Android. Contrary to what might be common sense... it's not the high end models. The Galaxy S3 and the Droid RAZR pay less than $3 more per sale than the iPhone does. It is far easier, in fact, to sell more accessories on iPhones, which tends to even them out in the end. I make my money on the little guys. The LG Lucids, the Stratospheres, the Incredible 4Gs. It's a little backwards, but it costs my company less to buy a Lucid, so even though we sell it for less to the customer, the payout from Verizon for the 2year contract winds up putting more money in our company's pocket. They pass a percentage of that on to me.
So while yes, technically I do have some incentive to talk people out of the iPhone and into an Android, the Androids I have to talk them into to be worth my while are ones that are hard to pitch against it in comparison. I end up pitching S3s and RAZRs anyway. So why do I make a point to talk every single one of my customers out of iPhones?
On principle. I cannot stand behind a company that does the things Apple does. The lawsuits, the overly closed system. I am tired of the swooning fanbase, that comes in with stars in their eyes and won't accept any answer other than the iPhone is god's gift to mankind. I would steer people from any Apple product based on that alone. But then it goes a step further.
I firmly, and truly believe that Android is easier to use. That it offers more user-friendly features and is more in touch with how a customer wants to use their phone. Today my boss shared an app with me by tapping our two phones together. It sent me to the play store and I downloaded it. Last week I shared my work schedule with my wife by typing in her gmail address in my calender, and now she'll see every work schedule I get, as I update it. Automatically. I have my ENTIRE library of music available to me without even taking up space on my phone, and it didn't cost me a dime. I've gone through 7 phones in the past two years and not ONCE did I have to worry about syncing my contacts, or my photos, or my apps. They come over, on their own, automatically. Every time. I have been voice searching for almost a full 2 years now, and it's so accurate that I don't even bother with keyboards anymore. I will do math, right there in the store, asking my phone out loud "what's sixty times point one nine?" to figure out a customer's employee discount. And it will spit an answer back out at me in less than 2 seconds.
Every single one of these items are things that the iPhone just cannot do. It can't. Heck, I can sync an Android phone to an iPad better than an iPhone can sync to it. I showed a customer how to do that this morning. They didn't believe it could be done. They sure as heck are a believer in the power of android now.
That's why I recommend Android. Every time.

Your list could go on and on.. But the biggest thing I can't stand is manufacturer software updates.
Android 4.0+ is where android has really improved and only 15% have it and that really is good enough.

This is one of my own largest complaints, and it is the single largest reason as to why I bought a Nexus. However, Google has gone on record stating that the time it was taken thus far to get an update as large as ICS out to the masses is to be expected.
Let me give you an example, comparing iPhone to Android, here.
A month ago, the iPhone released the developer beta of iOS 6. Now, without going on a tangent, the only way to access this beta is to be an app developer. Which means paying Apple money. You are paying Apple money to make an app for their system and see their new stuff early. Anyway. It was launched last month, for a phone rumored for October. 4 months of beta testing. Rather reasonable, actually. I can respect that.
Google, on the other hand, does their private beta testing on ICS for who knows how long. It launched in November, publicly. This launch is the FIRST TIME that any developer outside of their Nexus partner has seen it. I have reason to believe even the hardware partner hasn't seen the source code for it until the public unveiling. So at this time, EVERY hardware manufacturer for Android has just entered the development stage. They have to find ways to adapt it to old technology, to overcome limitations, decide what to cut, decide what to change. They have to adapt their trademark UIs (yes, we'd all like to see them go away...) This development stage is the exact same stuff Apple goes through. It's just that.... Apple kept it quiet, whereas Google launched it on a single, solitary phone. Therein lies the problem. We see more of the cycle with Android than we do with the iPhone. But we're not interpreting it for what it really is.

Awesome, thanks a bunch for sharing all those intriguing details, firelightx! Sales reps preferences are without a doubt an influence and I myself prefer to see a salesman genuinely passionate about something (be it Apple or Android) - that would be more of a swing factor rather than seeing that he or she is closing the deal just for the money.
It's interesting also that you can even out the difference with iPhone accessories. I'd love to see more people selling phones here join in with opinions - is it just your passion or is there some other difference in incentives for selling a particular phone.

I've felt this way for a while about Android, but I'll tell you... the big one that sold me on the idea that android IS in fact easier than iPhone, contrary to popular belief, was this set of videos I came across once.
This guy demonstrates, very plainly, an hour's worth of differences between the two that prove the point that Android is the simpler system. Some of these I still use frequently in my sales pitch. Heck, you might recognize some of the things I mentioned above in this video.\

i find all of this true. seriously. this is true. also the screen is tiny, and it makes it difficult to share stuff, and the ui is borring and old and it has only a fraction of features that android has and iphone just sucks. it sucks big time

None of it is true. I'm as pro-android as it gets, and I can promise you none of it is true. But quite frankly, the people who started saying these things aren't any different than the pro-apple people who started this whole mess about how difficult Android is to use. People BS. On every side of every fence, there are people who throw out BS in hopes that something will land.
All it tells me is that they're not smart enough to use the truth to win their argument. And they can prove their point just using the truth, if they do it right. I do it on a daily basis. When something is honestly and truly better than something else... lying about what makes it better or worse just makes one look like an idiot.

Well...what is wrong with quoted three reasons in article? Aren't those right? iOS has rectagular icons with rounded edges...for all apps...and there isn't any major update in iOS functionality either in last few iterations...Siri hasn't and probably will not replace text based search...and what new usable features were launched in iPhone4s apart from notifications? However, I would give full credit to iOS for good looks ;)

The only reason AT&T and Verizon are doing this, is to break the 2 year contract when the new iphone come out....Get it...buy a android phone now 2 months later pay $350 in ETF or pay full price to get the new iphone that will sell faster then gas or food. That's AT&T and Verizon plan to make extra money

wow what are youtalking about willywill that doesnt even make sense. the companies what you to cancel your contract so you can buy the iphone. Um if you cancel your contract then you cant keep your number unless you leave to another company. Yep what you wrote makes total sense. And if you meant they want people to pay full retail. well truth is when verizon sells an iphone outright for about 750 it actually cost the company around 700 just to get it to the stores. when they sell it with a plan is when they make money.

Welcome to the Club Iphone fans we Windows smart phone fans have been getting the same treatment for some time now. I went to a few Radio shacks in Philly and they do not even have one Windows smart phone from any Carrier and are stupid enough not have any online to sell to People who want a Windows smart phone I guess they wont carry "windows "8" Tablets Ether. they are "Android" slaves" I wont shop there for a smart phone or tablet Best Buy here I come

actually there are no windows 8 phones because there are no windows 8 phones everytime a windows phone comes out it gets taken off the shelf with in 2 to 3 months because of a huge update to a newer windows and everyone is just tired of it. most companys like smasung and moto dont even make windows phones anymore. these companies make phones that peple want . its how th eworld works man. If you want why dont you make a spaceman phone with windows 8 and see if anyone other then you buys it.

I work in a call center and can't comment on what stores are doing, but I can assure you we have not been directed in such a manner. We don't get any kind of commission for selling phones, and I don't know how that works in stores when comparing Apple to non-Apple devices. Of course pushing 4G is a must, but qualifying a customer for the right kind of phone is also up there on the list. Some people call in asking for an iPhone, and when asked why, most of the time the response is something like "it just looks cool" or "my friend told me it's great and said I should get one". So many times people get one and they don't like it, simply because they went by looks or what someone else said. What we are attempting to do is make sure we get the RIGHT device into a customers' hands, not just what they think they want.

Amen!!!!! Ive actually said this to customer they get the iphone anyway then come back telling me how right i was and how pissed they are that i didnt try to talk them out of it. I have one girl that is to embarresed to come into the store anymore because she hated her iphone so much she paid full retail for an android and now feels silly. everytime she sees me out she tell me hwo right i was and next time dont believe the hype but do your own research

Verizon doesn't tell us anything about which device to focus on. They may give Spiffs on a certain device and if it happens to be a good device and will fit the customer's needs then of course I'm going to push them more into that device over the iPhone or any other. Iphone pays crap so of course were not going to just push customer's to it unless they clearly state that they want simple and they are 70 years old. Our 4GLTE Android devices offer so many more features and give you more bang for your buck (customer's not just employees) so why would I suggest iPhone over a 4G phone? These articles are retarded.

I am not sure about other places but Verizon stores around in my area seem to lean more towards Android as well. I imagine this is because it is a major catalyst for the carrier but nonetheless, its not the main focus.

Yeah they sit all the way in the back corner of the store for a reason where as the Android phones and other FOCUSED iteams are out in the main area.

Not my store. Its right up front when you walk in and has its own "area." Android devices may seem more focused as there are over 15 different android devices vs 2 iPhones.

Here is the answer as to why the carriers are trying to avoid selling the iPhone; cost. COA (cost of acquisition) is high on the iPhone.Carries have to subsidize more of the cost of the device and also for every 1$ it takes to deliver a unit of data thru existing 3G networks it takes only 8¢ to deliver it on 4G LTE. All about cost to the carriers.
