About a month ago, UMi — an up-and-comer from China with a few value-based smartphones up for international sale — promised that it will be pushing an Android 7 Nougat update to its hottest models — the UMi Max, UMi Plus, and UMi Super — on the 24th of December. Considering that Google is just now pushing the new build to its own Nexus phones, UMi's update schedule would certainly qualify as quite fast.

And that's no joke, as UMi seems to be hard at work on the new update. The company has now released a teaser video, showing a UMi Plus handset running a very clean version of Android 7 Nougat. We can see the new customizable quick toggle tiles in the notifications shade and the N easter egg. Of course, a lot of Android 7's changes are under-the-hood improvements, such as a better Doze mode, project Svelte (which should optimize how apps work in the background), the Vulkan API (better use of the hardware for heavy 3D games). UMi also promises that the new update will optimize the way the phone uses its 13-megapixel camera, improving image quality further.

The UMi Plus is the company's “bargain flagship” sort of device. It's armed with a 5.5-inch, 1080 x 1920 Sharp display, MediaTek's octa-core Helio P10 SoC, 4 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of fast eMMC 5.1 storage, both memory chips courtesy of Samsung. It has a massive, 4,000 mAh Sony-made battery and a 13 MP sensor on its main camera, made by Samsung. The phone's storage can be extended via a microSD card up to 256 GB, and it has a USB Type-C data port. All of this for about $220 before shipping and tax from one of the many 3rd party resellers, which UMi endorses on its page.
