North American consumer purchase intentions put iPhone just ahead of Android

Right off the bat, we'd like to put out that we're not fully sold on surveys like this. Asking someone what they intend to purchase doesn't always match up with what they end up buying. If you asked us what car we intend to buy within the next year, we may say that we intend to buy a Tesla Model S, but a lot can change over the course of that year. So, we take customer purchase intentions with a grain of salt, and a new survey of North America shows that slightly more people want an iPhone than Android...

lol Yes that is true. I can honestly say the iPhone right now is for old people. So many baby boomers are rocking the iPhone now because they are A) everywhere & B) because they are cheap.
The iPhone 4 is being sold to all the senoir citizens. lol

At 52, I'm hoping I don't fall into the Senior or old people group. Also, I'm sporting an Android device; not an Apple. I spent 11 years with an Apple product before Apple was considered "Cool". Or as this generation puts it, "Dope" or "Chill".

Its funny to see how the US stands alone generally in this matter,where elsewhere in th world android has the vast market share sales over ios. No offense intended but the US is probably a more materialistic culture country than anywhere else worldwide and appearance,public perception and apparent show of 'status' are high resulting in the iphone being successful each year despite little change largely due to the social appearance of wealth and coolness and acceptance perceived to be gained by owning one. Else where worldwide most people are miles ahead with advanced tech from Sony,htc,lg,samsung etc pushing the boundaries and android market share each year.

agree, and even in countries where the boundaries of technology are not being pushed, people are more conscious about what they are getting for the money they are paying... at least for the most part.
So for kid's first smartphone, a conscious parent buy a decent not-expensive android phone, while in the US they get an iPhone 5

Pricing strategies are very different between networks in the US and networks elsewhere in the world. In the US, there's very little difference between the price of a high end Android phone and the iPhone. In other countries, the iPhone commands a distinct premium as both the handset price and contract price vary on a sliding scale. In the US, the contract price is typically set no matter what phone you get with the only variation in price being how much you pay up front for a device.

Yes, but at the end, with Android you get a choice of a phone that might suit your needs without having to pay 600-700 $... iPhone only sells "high end".
For example, I just bought a Sony Xperia Advance (go) for my dad and it was $245 unlocked from Amazon.... And it is a better package than an iPhone 3GS... similar to the iPhone 4 sans the high res screen...
If I wanted an iPhone for him at a similar price, I would have to buy used, and probably not in good shape, being a phone without accessible battery, and at least a couple of years old...

you must remember though that in the USA carriers subsidize the phones when customers sign contracts. The GS3 and iphone 5 are the same price along with many other manufactures flagship models. I will admit though that having an iphone has become a bit "trendy" but then again that's the image apple built their success off of. If you want another example of a country thats more based on materialism look at china or japan. People with low incomes will do whatever it takes to have the newest guccci whatever over there.

everyone likes to eat an APPLE but it turns out to be 300$ costlier than an equally tastier pack of JELLY BEANS so everyone goes with JELLY BEAN packs
but taking their intentions to eat an APPLE makes it a greater entity (at least cost wise) than any other.

all I had meant to say was that I don't believe in the accuracy of surveys looking at intentions, especially on a timeline as long as one year. I've edited the article to be clearer on that.

Yup. For some insane reason the iphone is still viewed (in america at least) as a status symbol. I don't get it, congratulations you can afford to splurge on a $200 item. If that's a source of pride, rethink your life and the decisions you've made.

No Nexus device will ever be a commercial success, because that's not the point of the device. It is a developer reference device, an early adopter device, and something Google uses to try to steer the Android ecosystem a bit. The decision to leave out LTE proves that. Google is more interested in making something for a specific purpose than commercial success. If not, all the Nexus devices would still be on Verizon.
