Nokia's ex-camera guru Damian Dinning unimpressed with the HTC One UltraPixel camera

0. phoneArena 20 Feb 2013, 08:04 posted on

The conversation in Damian's Twitter feed also hovers around the fact that it is just a normal size sensor optimized for larger pixels yet with 4 MP output, and the results from a juggernaut like the 808 PureView would be much better, since in its automatic 5 MP mode the effective pixel size is 3.85 microns against the HTC One's 2 microns...

So umm.. Where do people post their pics taken with smart phones? FB right? To show off and brag, but.. Do people actually care if your pic is grainy when zoomed in? I believe people don't actually do that so what's the point of "better quality" if you can only notice it when zoomed in? If you actually do that then I suggest getting a life or better yet, a job.

Actually many do care, if they're decent photos. If you look at an album and they're all dim awful bar photos or concert photos, there isn't much to see (worse if they're destroyed via a post-filter or Instacrapped). However, if a decent camera is used and the subject material is of interest, folks will want to see more.
Case in point: I've been uploading my wedding photos to Facebook to share with those that could not attend and also those that were there. The photos were taken by a professional photographer and his team, and look great, such that most in attendance have used the photos for their profile pics and cover photos. In contrast, an acquaintance had a "shotgun wedding" and their "reception" was at a bar, and the best cameras on hand were those in the smartphones or a cheap point-and-shoot. Only a few pictures are usable as anything other than a timestamp. Had someone there had an HTC One, or a Lumia 920 or 808 PureView (or a decent point-and-shoot) more of the photos of their special day would be useable and more memorable.

No one comes close to Nokia's camera technology. Nokia uses Carl Zeiss lens, which is one of the best in the world. The N8 is still the camera phone to beat, and the Lumia 920 and PureView808 only solidified their dominance. At MWC Nokia will show why they're the best once again.

HTC tried something new, kudos to them, but they shouldn't have started a war with the king and don't have an army. They brought a knife to a gunfight

Nokia phones are rubbish and are not quite the company it used to be. Pureview series of phones are overhyped and feel gimmicky. The Pureview 808 only saving grace is the Carl Zeiss lens. The phone itself looks like a brick with an outdated OS. Probably one of the worst looking phones.....As for the Nokia 920 one word unispiring.
The HTC one may not have the best camera but at least it sufficiently does the job for your general snaps to upload to the net websites and blogs. Overall a better looking, well designed phone with Android OS ftw.

Who is this "we" you speak of? Maybe that is what you want, but do not presume to speak for everyone else. I for one don't want to play "heavy games" on my device. Nor do I care for Beats audio as I have not bought into the need to spend a ridiculous amount of money on headphones.

Speak for yourself. If the HTC One is perfect for you, then that is awesome! But do not presume to speak for anyone else or attempt to invalidate the criticism of others over a device that does not fit their needs.

I'm not sure why you continue on this path. Not everyone wants to play GTA or Max Payne on their phone. I most certainly do not. If this is a priority for you, then great. Enjoy gaming on your phone. Obviously a device like the 808 is not the ideal match for your needs.

But, your needs are not going to be the same as the needs of other people. If I am looking for the best camera phone available, and do not care about mobile gaming at all, the 808 is probably the best phone for me. If I care about playing games, then I probably want to look into a high end Android or iPhone. If I want to watch movies on a large screen, I probably want the Note 2. If I want great Office integration I probably want a Windows Phone.

Everyone has different needs from their mobile device. Playing games on a device is not a primary criteria for everyone.

is not about pixels, its how do you use them... sorry my friends buts theres no reason to think that ultra pixel is better than pureview, you can talk about sells, but it is pointless.

What would you prefer, corean stuff or Finnish one?

Im take the real one

We can all agree that 808 Pureview phone has the best camera. We can also agree, that it is as ugly as hell and any manufacturer can but such a sensor in such a thick device! HTC made a very slim phone and one of the most amazing design ever. And... of course it is not a windows phone.

May not be a Windows Phone, but the new UI sure mimics it! *snicker*

What on earth does Windows Phone have to do with your point? Neither the One nor the 808 are Windows Phone, so why bring that up at all? You might as well say that it is not a watermelon. Factually accurate, but not pertinent to your comparison.

Hatin just because HTC actually incorporated a brilliant design, build quality, camera and sound. Rare combo pureviews all camera phone after thought. Htc complete product we'll let the comparisons prove it.

You people are missing a point here. This is not about just the camera alone. If someone admits that the pureview or lumia 920 camera is the best then how come it didnt really succeed? Are you buying a phone for just a camera alone? Lumia 920 sales are not really impressive or pureview808 which some people havent heard of it yet. With smartphones you have to consider everything. Design, experience, marketing, Build quality etc. People are bashing iphones or galaxy s3 but still they can sell millions
and for the Manufacturers those are the thing that matters.

At the end of the day, HTC is coupling the camera with Android... and Nokia is windows, and that alone will turn the scales to HTC...

How come there are so many Nokia fans in every news site, in every article... but not backing up sales...?

I also think ....and many, many ppl overlook this.... it might not be so much tha ppl dont like Windows Phone or Nokia...but other options are just good. Not saying other options are better, but just good in their own right.

Many ppl like the iPhone and Android. At the end of the day....they're both good. It is what it is. If either one sucked tremendously...WP woulda big a bigger hit by now. WP might pick up steam and grow some more in the next 2 years...but MS is running outta time for trying to get the 1 or 2 spot. They might have to settle on 3 or 4.

Come To The Facts !

Sensor Size:

Nokia 808: 1/1.2" / HTC One: 1/3"

Pixel Size:

Nokia 808 (In Mode PureView): 8 MP (3.07 Microns) / 5 Megapixels (3.91 Microns) / 3 MP (4.89 Microns) / HTC One: 2 Microns

Lens:

Nokia 808: Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar / HTC One: Largan Precision

Flash:

Nokia 808: Xenon (3rd Generation) / HTC One: LED (2rd Generation) !

808 PureView Is Infinitely Better Than The HTC One !

HTC One No Doubt Has An Interesting Camera, But It's Better Than Only The Mediocre iPhone 5, Razr HD, Optimus G, Nexus 4 And Xperia Z !!!

haha, htc just cant accept the facts. I remembered at this exact same event last year on the MWC, htc ceo announced on the same stage where Elop also was, that they had a 16mp crapcamphone, in an attempt to take away the crown from the then camphone king the n8. Elop was not even reacting. Turns out even their 16mp cam technology cant beat a 12mp n8. Then the very next day, nokia announces the pv808. Yes, everyone knew what happened then.

Wasn't Nokia the one who got busted trying to act like a commercial was filmed with their phone but actually was a professional video camera?
