How about iOS, given the fact that Apple only produces 1 model a year and having millions of it? If profit is what you're talking about, then iphone with iOS makes a lot of it since it is sold in very high price.

iphone is a luxury brand, and luxury when gets subsidised will sell millions in any given economic situation.

iPhone hasn't been the luxuxry product since 2007. Its full retail as well as subsidized prices are on par with Androids.

I wouldn't disagree with that, actually. Even though the iphone is average, it's still branded and seen as a semi-luxury product (apple) because of overpricing. Since there's so many of them it's not an exclusive product as apple likes folks to think it is, either

iOS is a singular manufacturer on a 100% locked down and extreme profit driven OS. It was never a choice for nokia, so why even bring it up?

I agree with you, it's a right track but what keeps them dragging down is killing symbian and meego. They should have not make a note of giving up symbian because it's their cash cow even if there's android and iOS. I hope nokia will get into their senses and revive meego as an alternate OS as what other companies are doing right now. You can't compete with WP alone for it's not that popular yet. And also, it's still on the process of development.

I agree, they should not have made a big deal about dropping Symbian and Meego to go with WP but I have an idea that was done to placate Microsoft and get their support and money to help the transition. After all its just like pol

i strongly agree with you! MeeGo has a Potential, but since it is linux based, MS blocked it for their own OS. Symbian on the other hand shouldn't be abandoned! they should at least use it for there mid range device! Nokia is being blind! they said that they will give what the costumer wanted! they should not abandon MeeGo/Maemo just for MS! same with Symbian! MS has a lot of restriction and its really a BullSh!T! you cant send music via bluetooth, etc.!but i like MS because its really beautiful! but i hope that "Meltemi OS" is real and will be out on Nokia World this September! and also the "SmarterPhone OS" for there low-end device! :)

give the customer what they wanted? They didnt kill meego/ symbian needlessly, it was a dying brand. The only reason it had the market share it did is because symbian was on all their feature phones as well. They were losing profit per device and selling less devices every year.
had they stuck with those 2, they would have been dead in the water anyways, it would have just taken longer.
Nokia isnt dead... and they are not in that much trouble. calm your horses. They had to burn the old city to make way for the new one.. and it takes time to rebuild. People are so impatient. MS is paying them hundreds of millions a year for their WP7 love on top of the higher profit per device that they get per WP7 smartphone. This wasnt some rash decision that they didnt think out. They knew they were going to crash before they became healthy again.

they r talking about windows 8, not windows phone 8. will be awesome if a tablet has the same windows that my computer (with a few change) and will be a killer tab

windows 8 will be on tablets. They will have a desktop mode on them. Thats the big draw.. a tablet with true PC functionality. W8 will look the same on phones, tablets, PC's, Xboxes, Fords, and whatever else they install on to. And the higher end devices will be desktop compatible.

a few things that can be done by elop is that they should try investing some time in meego, meego design brought lumia range in spotlight in actual. plus. getting some stake in RIM or any sort of security protocols would also help stem them in corporate arena. Andriod isnt Nokia's way of playing, what if every one makes the same diapers, how can you compete on margins then. WP is fine, its that peple are so connected to Andriod and IOS they dont want to move on, win 8 should break it if only compelling devices are there. Shareholders should be pateint Nokia is already on a make or break situation by year end anyhow.

totally agree with you! android is a s**tty and laggy OS in my experience(I've tried Samsung Galaxy 2) but android doesn't have restrictions and its free! iOS on the other hand is really wonderful is really smooth like WP and i adore them with that! but they both have restrictions! you cant send music which is i consider the most important! i hope on WP8 they will remove those restrictions and few limitations! and they shouldn't kill MeeGo/Maemo and Symbian! they should be there back up OS like samsung did with Bada and WP and soon tizen! nokia should go beyond the limits! but they wouldn't play the android game! because the only android manufacturers who gain benefit with android is samsung, google, asus and huawei! huawei on the lower market, Chinese market to be exact! and most of the android player like sony, HTC, LG and many more do not have many buyer than those like of samsung!

Android is not free! The OEM's still have to develop skins to fit on the OS and tweak it or whatever. Someone has to work on that in the back. When an update comes out they still have to work on it. Equals not free. Meanwhile Nokia went with an OS they could partner with. Not just use the OS. They got MS in their corner to help in every aspect from marketing to R&D. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Unfortunately for Nokia they did indeed overlook the explosion of the smartphone. Maybe perhaps they were so far ahead with 'feature' phones that they took their eye off the ball and lost out on the smartphone race due to being complacent. As bad as that may have been they then made their second big mistake by deciding to run with windows mobile,an os far behind its competitors and one nobody actually wants. The first mistake overlooking smartphone is formidable if they made the right moves to rectify it,however their decision to run with the windows platform which is a sales flop is unforgettable they have been the agents of their own unfortunate demise .

i dont think so that windows phone is a mistake. for the fact that when IOS and Andriod were released they id took time to take care of the markets. Just imagine how the donuts and Froyos were before Gingerbread came. Things take time, and Windows Phone has performed well enough in the terms of market response. Mango has been fine and acclaimed well, what is lacking is the fact there there is no expandable memory, no Bluetooth transfers and lack of so called apps that i dont know hwy is so important. hope all this would get addressed in win 8

AGREE! WP isn't really a mistake! it has a different environment which is refreshing because iOS and Android really look the same! and ope WP8 will change what WP7/7.5 dont have! they should give expandable memories, and bluetooth transfer which is really important to a user like me! apps are growing so i got no problem with it!
the only mistake they made is killing MeeGo/Maemo and symbian! atleast they made meego/maemo as there back up OS on High-end phones and symbian on mid-range to low-end phones! and i hope that Meltemi is real and will appear on nokia world this september and so is "SmarterPhone OS" for entry level smartphones! i just cant wait! hope they will really satisfy what a nokia fan wants!

Its all upon the Nokia world this year.
I will Nokia being in the competition again all they needs to combine their assets like pureview, swipe UI and Symbian features to windows phone 8.
Right now all the good things are scattered.
One more thing, how hard you may criticize windows phone os.
Windows 8 tablets will blow out any iPad or android tablet out there.

Should have kept symbian/Meego for Europe and started WP8 for USA. Their mistake was sacrificing symbian worldwide to try to break into the US market which they lusted after. Symbian was never popular in the States but wildly so in Europe.
Nokia should ensure their phones come with their legendary penta band radio. I am tired of phones not working on one band or another. Would have bought a Lumia 800/900 if it had a decent radio in it.
Also you can't launch your phones without internet sharing/wifi hotspot. Now you lost my sale of a nokia 710 for that (since i'm on tmobile and it was either the nokia or the radar).
Finally make sure your phones have the legendary battery life of your old symbian phones. At least better than android and ios.
Really nokia has some great things going for them ... nokia drive free sat nav with downloadable maps, great design, pentaband radios, great battery life. Just being too slow getting it all together into a decent phone.

I think your points are right on the mark. I am anticipating the crop of WIndows Phone 8s to show Nokia's capabilities. PureView with better cameras (the 900's, despite being Carl Zeiss, is disappointing. Not bad, just not as good as expected. Speaking from experience as an owner), good screens, better resolution, great design, good battery life, and of course, the best signal reception in the business

The secret of Nokia's camera is a combination of hardware+software...right now WP7.5 does not allow Nokia to tweak the software on the camera to take better pictures, that's why you see the camera on the Lumia phones is not that great, but that's gonna change with WP8

Folks Nokia must make an intel x86 or AMD x86 CPU chipset tablet because at this time only the Intel x86 or AMD x86 CPU' & chipset can run 90% of Windows 7 PC Business programs, or PC games and other Old Windows PC programs on them. Folks this means the Intel x86 or AMD x86 CPU & chipsets Tablet Computers have thousands upon thousands of Programs available for use when they come to market because PC programs were written to operate on computers that had X88 intel or x86 AMD CPU's and chipsets in them. The New Windows 8 RT ARMS CPU tablets cannot do this. Microsoft is at the moment getting developers to write APPs for the Windows 8 RT tablets. it may be possiable for Windows RT arms tablets to run Windows Phone 7.5 mango apps but that is specualtion. the Windows 8 RT Arms tablets wii be the new Kids on the block with very few Apps it will take them 2 years to get enough apps to be useful but they will get there. folks hopfully there will be an APP written so that Windows 8 RT ARM's tablet computers can run Windows 7 PC APPs or Android Apps theses Apps will make Windows 8 RT on Arms tablets useful Tablets
