With Belle ready to be released across all Symbian^3 devices, Carla already showing up in various developer forums, and Skype & Microsoft Office products now getting released on Symbian phones...does this rumor make sense? For sure, Symbian is in rapid decline in Western Europe. But Asia made up most ot the 18+ Million handsets sold last quarter. To note, these sales increased quarter to quarter. So why would Nokia abandon the platform so early. It makes no sense. Sure, it woud lower costs...but at a significant cost to the top line.

Neither Elop nor Ballmer want to see the platform tank so quickly, simply because a massive install base is just as likely to move to other ecosystems BEFORE Windows Phone (w/Apollo) is ready to carry them over to a highly capable mobile environment (4Q12). Both companies want to bolster Symbian between now and 2013, not kill it.

I'm sure Symbian's future devices will be limited to key products that build on Nokia's known strengths and not necessarily hit every price point, as in the past. More specifically, the higher end is now with Lumia, and the lower end has been somewhat encroached upon by more capable S40 devices and the potential reentry of a Linux/Harmattan device (Meltemi rumored to take over from both S40 and Symbian in the value to discount price categories).

But to completely kill off Symbian now seems rediculous and irrational. Sounds like someone is playing a PUT trade.

Given Elop's phrase from the previous financial quarter results disclosure that says "...As a result of the changing market conditions, combined with our increased focus on Lumia, we now believe that we will sell fewer Symbian devices than we previously anticipated.", I certainly do not understand from what bases can he say that.

Symbian might be functionally obsolete, yes! But I personally think that during Nokia's transition period, Symbian smartphones - together with its S40 & S30 dumbphones, are Nokia's bread and butter. Without Symbian (and with only the Lumias being sold), could you imagine how catastrophic (as if THIS happening at Nokia right now isn't catastrophic enough) would their financial results would be? So why again would Elop bad-mouth such an important platform like Symbian especially considering the fact that Nokia has been bleeding for QUITE A LONG TIME now and that it can no longer allow further bleeding?

To describe Elop in one word, he is a MOLE that is trying to leech Nokia out in favor of Microsoft.

Over here in Asian market, very few people care about what the OS inside. Those symbian phones have become so cheap that nearly every age group have it. Some don't even know what's symbian, iOS, or Android. Even if they knew the only thing that would make them purchase a Nokia phone is
: PRICE
: Built Quality
: Pretty Design
: Camera Video Quality
: Ease of Use
: After sales spare parts
: Facebook Integration
: Music Speakers Quality
If nokia symbian is discontinued the only thing that would replace it fairly is an affordable nokia windows phone plus a big push in marketing, live tiles would seem odd here.
You have to bear in mind that asians buy full unlocked price. Contract things doesn't exist here.

i always thought that symbian looked nice, but the developer community is too small for my liking. it doesnt matter much to me if symbian dies now or later.

symbian phones are a hit india, which is the biggest market for Asia, if Nokia is phasing out symbian all of a sudden, that would be cruelty.....

Here in the Philippines, Symbian running nokia phones are a seller, the s40 & s30 phones are still selling like pancakes due to the ease of use it provide and also some all around package it brings to the users. The older generations still prefer them while most middle class young generations use them due to affordability ( less spending for parents) although I see a gradual decline soon due to the lowering of the prizes of many low-end android phones. But I also see a distant adaptation of a windos phone due to its closed nature and also the price will still help determine how well it will sell. . .

Btw, here in Nigeria, the cheapest Symbian^3 phone you'll get will cost you $250, so I don't get why u guys call them cheap, unless you're referring to s40.

Why is Victor H still allowed to post articles? Every one of his articles I've read have been baseless and cr@p. Why would Nokia cancel the only thing keeping them relevant and afloat in the mobile world? Symbian was by leaps and bounds the money maker in terms of Nokia's smartphones. Even the N9 outsold Windows Phone. I seriously suspect Victor H has something personal against Symbian and Nokia. I seriously hope you either learn to back your articles up with hardcore facts or simply stop posting articles Victor.

Just another unprofessional article from Victor. Also another "almost iOS/Android fan trolling wp/nokia". Every single article that guy writes is somehow negative.

He deserves to be kicked out of phonearena. There are plenty of good mobile device professionals who writes excellent articles, based on knowledge and neutral point of view.
