Nokia job listing hints at Android in the future
0. phoneArena posted on 30 Nov 2012, 12:42
This could be nothing, but it could be that Nokia is looking for a backup plan in case Windows Phone doesn't pan out. At least that's the best guess for why Nokia had posted a job listing that made it sound like Android might be in the future...

Good point. I updated the article to reflect that Nokia killed Meltemi back in June.

Wouldn't there be a possibility that nokia is helping Jolla out? Or that Jolla is nokia' s back up lol

What if Nokia never stoped its Linux line but let the developers "free", so if WP8-M$ fails, they could get in no time on the track with Linux-like-Android-similar-compatible?
59. smartphone posted on 30 Nov 2012, 20:21 0 0
Or they can make a Linux based tablets that can run android apps, becoz a windows based tablet doesn't make much sense.
And Microsoft is working on a surface phone so Nokia can work on anything they like.

Or may be it has to do something with the Nokia Air concept that was leaked months ago and their future disruption with mobile cloud computing.

I'd be surprised if Nokia actually made an android device, even I can't see that!

I really doubt that Nokia will cooperate with Google to make Android phones, but Android is possible.
Nokia has a everything for a full ecosystem: maps, music, apps... This is too much to throw away.
But I can see they go Amazon way and take a version of Android and develop their own OS from it.
2. drahmad posted on 30 Nov 2012, 12:56 21 12
they should better com up with a dual boot phone (android+wp)
21. xtroid2k posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:49 12 3
Why would you thumb this dude down. That is genius I would buy a dual boot phone. Android plus WP, no brainer for me. Top notch Hardware, yup that would be the day.
62. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 30 Nov 2012, 20:37 0 0
I'm still waiting for a good dual boot Android & Ubuntu phone.
3. georgecm posted on 30 Nov 2012, 12:56 4 9
Or Tizen or Sailfish or Ubuntu at last?
Nokia is not going to test Android, because it doesn't fit with the philosophy of the Finlands...
It seems more possible to create a new OS, than to step back to Android.
5. drahmad posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:00 12 0
new os? do you realize how much efforts it would require? i am pretty darn sure nokia isn't that stupid.
13. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:27 3 0
Agreed, getting a new mobile OS built is tremendous work. Even Samsung admitted it wasn't an easy task. I'm sure they did consider Android and MS at the same time and decided with MS having less OEM's, it would be easier to take off there. If they ever did make an Android handset though, I'd buy one.
29. darac posted on 30 Nov 2012, 14:21 0 0
It would go perfect with their philosophy if they make a Maemo-looking interface : )

I think Nokia would do quite well with Android, and be able to offer a lot. I would say the 2 biggest downsides to Android phones in terms of hardware are their cameras and their build quality. If I remember correctly, the 920 took quite a beating and did quite well against it. A lot of the newer Android phones are very fragile and crack very easily. You shouldn't be dropping your phone, but hey it most likely it'll happen and it'd be nice to have it survive. Also, while the camera department is improving, Pureview would be a much appreciated and welcomed feature.
36. gwuhua1984 posted on 30 Nov 2012, 15:03 0 0
Build quality and cameras differs based on manufacturers. I'm sure if Nokia goes with Android, they will have their own camera with own build quality.

Dear PA, I told you million times - hire educated people! You only make fun of yourselves now. In case your draftsman didn't know Symbian is a Linux based OS, much more than Android is. Now please, fire 50% of your monkeys and post some job offers, this time make sure you do not hire cotton harvesters from Hindunesia. :)
9. chaoticrazor posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:14 9 4
mate your need an attitude adjustment, besides why arent you doing this job if its so easy. bet your educational level aint half what they have. maybe P.A should do an article on whinny muppets you can be the star
seriously look at yourself before you show attitude to others
16. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:29 3 0
You can make a point without the insults. In fact, it'll be received as well.
44. MichaelHeller posted on 30 Nov 2012, 15:48 11 0
We do our research. Symbian is based on the EPOC kernel. Android uses the Linux kernel. Therefore, you are wrong, and you have no reason to be such a jerk.
12. anywherehome posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:24 5 4
If they had switched to android I would have had great combination of
android+Nokia offline maps =great advantage
But it is already late..... bye bye Nokia
15. chaoticrazor posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:28 3 6
already late...hmm weird the 920 seems to be doing well, plus everyone even most fanboys acknowledge nokia are excellent for build quality and a good 2 years ahead when it comes to camera's
and even if you dont like it, wp8 is gaining traction and has fix most of what 7 was missing/lacking
but you wont like that, insted you will have a tantrum they didnt choose android first
33. anywherehome posted on 30 Nov 2012, 14:58 2 3
It's simple: no, numbers show you are not true :-)
17. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:32 2 1
Nokia isn't going anywhere, their phones are too solid for them to close the doors. It would take a monstrous effort to get back to where they used to be, but anything is possible. Just because you probably don't like W8 doesn't mean Nokia is in trouble.
50. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 30 Nov 2012, 17:43 2 1
Being in trouble and shutting down business are two different things. They do have all the potential to turn it around and put themselves back on the map, their recent phones have garnered a lot of attention.
14. darthinvader posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:28 0 1
Well, it seems that Nokia is finally putting up a fight with Microsoft..
If MS can say that they might come with up its own handsets, then even Nokia can switch to Android whenever its contract with MS expires..
But I guess that aint gonna happen.. atleast not anytime soon..
WP+Nokia = Good Combo..
18. myownchoice posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:40 0 0
I really hope it happens.... nokia with android...lol... with nokia customization on top of android, their hardware, camera... man.. thats gonna be no1.. by the way.. wp looks the same in every device..
19. protozeloz posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:41 1 1

23. josephnero posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:52 2 0
Come on people.PA isnt saying Nokia will surely go android way.they are just giving us info.
26. xtroid2k posted on 30 Nov 2012, 13:57 0 0
The only concern I would have would be for the Windows Phone platform. If Nokia goes Android and Windows Phone, what happens to the Value of the OS. I think that would send shock waves in the WP community. I personally would love to see support for both as it only makes financial sense.

I'd like to see more companies, such as Nokia and Sony, take the same route as Samsung and HTC and produce Windows and Android phones.
It reduces the risk if one operating system's sales start falling and gives customer's even more choice. It's great that Samsung and HTC fans can get a phone on the operating system they want (obviously excluding iOS).
37. gwuhua1984 posted on 30 Nov 2012, 15:06 0 0
I'm sorry, but I don't see Sony using WP... Just can't see it...
68. asseek posted on 30 Nov 2012, 21:14 0 0
he didn't mean that sony is using WP, he meant that Sony should work on WP along with Android, and Nokia should work on Android along with WP
87. gwuhua1984 posted on 04 Dec 2012, 12:05 0 0
I know what he meant, but I still don't WP running on a Sony device.
Can you picture Sony running WP? Personally, I think it be pretty weird with the current Sony phone designs. Having bunch of weird colors just to matching WP's colors... HTC's design concepts are perfect for it, but Sony... nope.

sooo Lumiaa Nexus 2.0 ghz quad core, 2gb ram, key lime pie, 4.8inches, 1080p screen, pureview camera, 3500mah battery, 32gb internal storage and micro sd card slot.....damnnnn beautiful!

Nokia should have used Android after Symbian, but when you have a Chairman related to thier current dealers Microsoft,Mr Elop wanted to help them so made Nokia choose Windows as there ecosystem, but Symbian is more like Android an thats why alot of Nokia users have switched to Android,as Windows is not easy to Customize with Themes an Way behind in the Application Market
41. chaoticrazor posted on 30 Nov 2012, 15:21 2 2
you do know this is nothing more then speculation, people are jumping the gun
57. lyndon420 posted on 30 Nov 2012, 19:56 1 0
Absolutely. I can still dream though lol. But there was a few times over the last couple years where it was noted how Nokia may have regretted not going with Android...or at least tried the waters like everyone else. I see no reason why they couldn't have messed around with the droid for a handset or 2 while ms was getting their ducks in a row...probably would have saved them a few jobs and stock points. Keeping a more reasonable presence in the mobile markets during their transition wouldn't have hurt them either...and there's more than a few people out there who have been screaming for some Android with Nokia hardware.
61. chaoticrazor posted on 30 Nov 2012, 20:31 2 1
see i get lots are sold on android and have become closed minded but i think its a bad move right now (obviously it aint happening in the forseeable future just saying) wp8 was the smarter choice as nokia can be the dominate presence (like samsung is to android) and seeing as nokia needs to regain there presence this seems much smarter
and before people say im a android hater, i actually would go buy a android nokia if it was good i.e. camera to match the 808. but with samsung basically been the first thing people think of when android is mentioned nokia would find it hard to get there foot in the door (remember the general public dont see nokia the same way as people on here do its just another manufacture to them). id say nokia (if there planing this) should wait till mid 2013 let other companys play there cards and one up them in a big way
67. asseek posted on 30 Nov 2012, 21:11 1 0
for me i would buy an android nokia, honestly i don't hate android, but some ignorant commentors just piss me off (some even went further in their obsession, from Apple fans) i was going to get an android device, but the most thing i hate is a laggy phone (at the time of samsung galaxy s 2) as i read i think they had fixed that issue now. and i even convinced 3 of my friends to buy the galaxy s 2 lol
for me the best os is Maemo 5 (i still use it till now) then Symbian (never tried WP or MeeGo) but i got a hands-os on both
88. gwuhua1984 posted on 04 Dec 2012, 12:06 0 0
Android Nokia definitely...
48. MC1123 posted on 30 Nov 2012, 17:02 0 0
they should bring back meego/jolla! hire them again, or buy them! and support them!! dont make stupid mistakes!!! use meego/sailfish OS and make it able to run android or can port android apps like BB10 is doing!!! and this will be great!!!
ALL HAIL NOKIA!
