Nokia is the King of the Windows Phone jungle
0. phoneArena posted on 24 Mar 2012, 12:06
A few months ago, Taiwan based HTC insinuated that it was the top manufacturer of Windows Phone handsets; less than half a year after that statement, Nokia is saying that it has taken over the reigns to become the globe's top OEM of Windows Phone flavored handsets...

This doesn't surprise me at all. Who else has introduced a new windows phone in that last six months? Nokia is the only OEM really focused on WP7 right now.

It doesn't surprise me, but those other OEMs might be feeling 2nd class right now. Perhaps it is justified since they sell so many Android phones, but at this rate those OEMs may feel back stabbed since Nokia is getting preferential treatment.
One only has to look at MS's history to know what will happen next.

Samsung Omnia W, Samsung Focus S, Samsung Focus Flash, HTC Radar, HTC Titan, HTC Titan II, LG E906, Acer Allegro, ZTE Orbit.
---
That's at least 9 models that were announced or introduced to market during last 6 months. Nokia only announced 4 models, and only 2 of them are already in the market. Yet, they managed to get 87% market share.
---
Nokia always was and still is the top smartphone manufacturer, when it comes to hardware. Their only HW limitation is on OS side (in both WP and Symbian cases). Just look what happened when they had the chance to bring smartphone using the same OS like other manufacturers. Lumia 800/900 literally erased any interest for Samsung's or HTC's WP flagships.
---
Imagine what will happen when they will have time to pack their WP smartphones with typical Nokia technologies like PureView, Nokia Rich Recording, USB on-the-go, FM transmitter, HDMI output... together with multicore processors, LTE, NFC, higher display resolutions and SD cards support (WP8 Apollo) it would be really breathtaking HW.

what really helped them out is their exclusive apps like free TbT navigation, and the ton of advertising money MS has given them. The other handsets are perfectly fine, but Nokia is handed major advantages by MS.. and that was the deal they made to bring Nokia to the table.

Okay, maybe 6 months was a little bit of an embellishment, although a couple you mentioned were introduced as far back as September 11', but I know what your saying. But other than the Titan and the Radar, nothing is really making any noise in the market. I'm not saying they're bad devices, but these OEMs don't seem to be focused on WP7 to me. Samsung probably feels bullied into making WP7 products because of the whole "Make phones for us, or we'll charge you $15 bucks per Android", so I don't really think their heart is in it. HTC makes pretty much the same phone for everyone, so they're devices are all looking very dated. And I've never even heard of a few of the others you mentioned. If you think about it, with Microsoft footing Nokia's push for the 700/800/900, why would any other manufacter even want to invest heavily in WP7? I'm sure they'll continue making devices for them but not w,ith as much enthusiasm as they have been got Android. Microsoft picked their champion and maybe ostracizing the other OEMs maybe a wake up call for them.

Sure no surprise, and if Google allowed Nokia to customize and use android it will in be the top two in that also.

My next windows phone would either be from Nokia or HTC, unless Samsung up their game. No LG for me, they suck, even with their Android offering.

if i din rmb wrongly, it was 87% out of the 2.5% of mobilephone sales that was windows? Thats not really an achievement

While that is true, the focus of the story is Nokia's claim that it is the largest OEM of Windows Phone flavored smarthones. Therefore, the more relevant stat is the 87% of Windows Phone sales in the U.K. that belonged to the Nokia Lumia 800 over that timeframe.

@sinple You also just blindly skipped the part in the article which says that last year, the average price for a Nokia handset was only $186 but with Windows Phone, particularly the Lumia 800 and soon the Lumia 900 and later the Lumia WP8 devices, the average Nokia handset would now be at least 250% from last year's average price.
Additionally this year, volume will surely come when the Lumia 610 is released in emerging markets. The lower price point of the 610 will lower the average price of Nokia phones but the volume will take care of profitability.
And of course, there is also the release later this year of the Nokia W8 tablets.
So don't worry how Nokia will do, it'll do just fine thank you.

Glad to see some progress, this is just the beginning. I'm sure Nokia has more in plan. We'll hear more about them by April.

No, what they are claiming is like saying that they are the tallest midget!
12. remixfa posted on 24 Mar 2012, 16:33 2 0
ha, that just about mirrors a comment i made like yesterday about Nokia. :) Instead of being another in a sea of androids, they are taking the chance on being the premier WP7 device.
Yes, its a longer climb up the sales ladder, but when they get there, they will be the only brand they are competing with in the WP7 space. You guys that dont think WP7 is going to gain real market share in the next year to 2 years are in for a surprise. Id bet the farm that WP7 is in at least the teens in market share next year (2013) and 20's the year after (2014). And if Nokia can keep the vast majority of WP7 sales to themselves, that means they are selling close to as many handsets as Apple and Samsung. All with a higher average price than the sets they were selling with symbian.

This did not mean they are the top window oem just the top in the UK and the UK is a very small market

I not only think Nokia will succeed, but become more profitable than they have ever been before. They may never get their perch back as the largest manufacturer (Samsung looks too strong for that). But with less R&D needed per device due to not needing software investments that they had with Symbian, Nokia will turn a larger profit per handset and can make more money even if they sell less.
I also think other WP manufacturers will benifit from Nokia's investment. If Nokia brings WP into the mainstream, than the Metro OS will become very well known. Other WP devices will be an easier sell. Android is now an easy sell for all cell phone makers due to the success of the Droid series at Verizon making it a household name. Nokia can do the same for Microsoft.

Nokia actually the only manufacture who cares about windows phone
my next phone will be nokia lumia
19. -RVM- posted on 25 Mar 2012, 17:57 0 0
Nah, it's not that other manufacturers don't care. They are just not able to keep up direct competition from Nokia, when it comes to device design, additional services and built-in apps in the same OS. Imagine what will happen, when Nokia will have enough time to pack their typical tech like PureView, Nokia Rich Recording, USB on-the-go, FM transmitter, ClearBlack displays, HDMI output in their future WP models....
21. remixfa posted on 25 Mar 2012, 19:12 0 1
all that stuff was Symbian. There is no promise that MS will allow any of that. They are not the only ones with HDMI, and the CB display was a samsung Super Amoled display with a anti reflection coating on it. Nice features no doubt, but dont get your hopes up too high.
Besides, the CB display is already on the nokia WP7 models. :)

That's why i mentioned mostly HW features, which can be added without too much changes in OS. USB on-the-go is probably an exception, since it requires higher integration with OS imo.
