Nokia debunks the Android rumor, sends over a different translation of CEO Elop's quote

0. phoneArena 08 Jan 2013, 10:36 posted on

Nokia's PR department was quick to react yesterday to what it deemed a bad translation of the CEO Stephen Elop interview with the Spanish El Pais, where his words "anything is possible" on the topic of Nokia going Android made a couple of tours around the globe, or at least the tech blogosphere part of it...

You misunderstand what he says, he means despite the crisis Nokia is still a power and not newcomer like some Chinese companies.

You mean *their. And how? WP is still taking off and Nokia Lumia devices are often highly held in regard. Nokia would definitely be lost in the shuffle if it went the Android route. Right now, Nokia is WP King and makes headsets are that powerful, yet affordable while running smoothly without skimping on features.

thanks for the correction, but its common sense not to put all your eggs into one basket and nokia has done that with MS windows phone, nobody will argue the Nokia with its years of experience is the best handset maker in the world but its stubbornness to adopt the fastest growing OS in the world is quite stupid and that might be its down fall, WP8 is no way close to android or even ios, but MS says its the best OS around "laughing" you dont bring a tooth pic to a missile fight between Android and iOS, just my personal opinion.

iPhone was once the fastest. You can't always stay at the top. Nokia was once at the top. Android will slowly decline..the moment, I will find myself laughin'

They may publicly have their eggs in one basket for smartphones, but they still have positive contacts with Jolla, and if WP were to fail (unlikely), the hardware they're using now could easily have android installed on it. I'm somewhat surprised there aren't a legion of XDA folk who are trying to find a way to run cyanogenmod on the 920 (to my knowledge)

Honestly, from a business standpoint, Nokia going with Android wouldn't be a good idea for numerous reasons. Right now, in the realm of Android, Samsung is king, with HTC, LG, Motorola, and Sony trailing behind. Then you have the smaller OEMs like ZTE, Huawei, Pantech, Kyocera, and many others trying to make names for themselves, but people dismiss them because they make "cheap" handsets. Windows Phone is actually growing and gaining market share, slowly but surely. Many people see a Lumia phone as THE Windows Phone. It took awhile for Android to take off, so people need to give Windows Phone some time. I've played with a few Windows Phones and I would definitely switch because I actually like the interface and the OS is smooth like butter. Don't get me wrong, I like Android and I'm enjoying my GALAXY Nexus, but I've owned a few Nokias in my time and I love their hardware. I hope Sprint gets a Lumia or at least the Ativ from Samsung.

Android is big and noisy market, WP is a abandonned warehouse.

Nokia has a good product and Android is only place to go, this does not guarrantee Nokia sure success but it offers Nokia great CHANCE.

on the other hand Nokia has no chance in that empty warehouse.

mate your so one sided, you android fanboys whine about nokia going android yet crap on there efforts with the 920 etc

you cry they need to yet then say more choice is better but are still moaning everyone should go android......thats not choice

how about for once, you android fanboys stop moaning and crying and just keep to your samsung, HTC etc. samsung rules android at the moment nokia no matter what there name still holds wouldnt make a dent as the general public who make up more of the market then you fanboys would choose samsung. there the apple of the android world,

nokia has a better chance with wp8 as they are the biggest player

seriously though stop the whining, why are android fans such cry babies

Android does not need Nokia, it's Nokia needs Android.

I'd be glad if Nokia successful with WP or Sailfish or whatever. Because I want to see Nokia successful and not b-c of particular OS.

You WP fanboys don't care about Nokia, you care about MS and you don't care how evil MS is.

whining and moaning? Maybe, but that's Nokia and WP not Android. Android is winning and do winners ever whine?

Bwahaha. Who's whining? Nokia does not need Android. It's Andorid fans dying for Nokia. Isn't it Google who is evil now? If Android is winning, it doesn't need Nokia. Why you fans not satisfied of your crappy phones? If you really care for Nokia, go buy there phones. For all I know, you only care for Android. Hypocrite! Try Nok 920, you'll be amazed to forget how boring Android is.

Hypocrite? I will support Nokia to use any OS if that's good for Nokia. Look what losses Nokia makes every year now.

when Nokia makes profit with WP I will buy your argument. 920 is selling DESPITE of WP, and not b-c of it.

920 has great innovation but that's nothing compared to SS, Sony, HTC... The highlight of 920 is the camera but I'm sure new Sony Xperia Z will surpass it.

But I'm not lying that I want Nokia to make Android phone, but that does not mean we NEED Nokia.

WP need Nokia, that's the point. WP is nothing w/o Nokia. A OS of single substantial OEM, supporting single chip... and don't be surprised that Nokia will abandon WP in H2 this year.

Blah blah blah. Just wish that Nokia will do well with WP (that's if you really care). Stop denying that Nok's efforts running WP8 are beginning to pick up steam. The deal with China Mobile and its 700M users to subsidize Lumia 920T is a huge win already. If you don't NEED Nokia really in android, you should stop defending your hypocrisy.

I had high hope for WP8, but was disappointed with it, MS did very bad job. I really want WP and iOS or other OSes push Android hard b-c that will make Android better.

Nokia successful with WP, Sailfish..? why not.

I do hope Nokia do well in China, Nokia brand is strong in China and 920 is a good phone despite the poor OS. So lets see how it will turn out.

I don't defend anything, I just want the best to Nokia. And you want to tie Nokia to WP sinking ship.

Poor OS? I doubt you ever use one. WP has the highest user satisfaction. Go check Amazon, AT&T, Rogers, etc website. If 920 has a bad OS, users will mention it.

Of course not, but I see lots of reviews.

WP has highest satisfaction? Maybe only hardcore fans are using it?

Hardcore fans are droids and ish$$p who can't open their eyes in knowing there are better options out there. L920 is $200 less than iphone 5 & $100 less than GS3, yet the best phone of 2012 that just grabbed 12 media awards.

People often complain about defects and malfunctions. WP8 has very few phones and users so is there any surprise that there are few complaints as well?

It's great that 920 wins awards, but Nokia needs good sales more I guess, and that's just not possible with WP.

Seriously????? Do you even know what is choice????
Choice is that when nokia makes wp and android phones... Sticking with wp is not a choice...
No one cried when samsung and htc made windows phones....
You are crying that nokia should never make android phones...
Don't try to behave like a gentleman...when actually you are not...

The bible says "You can't serve two masters". If you are focus and committed, you will have the glory at the end amidst trials and adversity. Nokia is just doing the right thing, by holding its ground and never let temptation by the devil dissuade promising free ice cream. In the end Nokia will see eternal glory holding windows phone with zeal.

Some of you people talk like Nokia is building something behind your own backyard with your consent!
If Elop says Nokia is not adopting Android, than he has an obvious reason for that...no one knows what, but people at Nokia know.
I would love to see Android on a Nokia and have dreamt of it too...but just because of that Nokia is not going to boom up to 1st place.
Believe me, after it's all said and done, most of you will complain that Nokia's Android phone (assumption) is not good enough, and you'll get back to your old devices.

exactly, basically they just want everyone using one os, they would never go and buy it if they made one. they would criticize and ridicule it saying crap like ''samsung is the way to go'' or '' nexus is the only android phone to get'' blah blah blah

I doubt it....seeing as how many ppl raved over the G Nex and Rezound. They both sucked to me. Many ppl dont like Motorola phones. Its my fav Android manufacture. Whatever Nokia does well....they will have fans in Android land. And whatever they dont do well....they will have their haters.

One thing Nokia does well is the phone parts. THATS why I like Nokia and wouldnt mind a Nokia phone. A Nokia phone could knock Motorola out the way. I have a feeling if they went Android...they would be surprised how well they do. We wont know until they try tho. If they try and it doesnt work, no harm no foul. They coudl even set a small time frame to see if any success happens.
