Nokia Lumia 920 takes on iPhone 5 again, this time in video image stabilization
Using a precision machined foam holster held together with tape, the gang at Engadget took the two devices for a walk to compare the quality of the image stabilization. After hitting record on the devices, they walked and ran across the parking lot in front of the Nokia R&D facility in Tampere, Finland.
As you can see from the video below, the Lumia 920’s optical image stabilization outperforms the iPhone 5’s digital compensation pretty handily. It should be noted that the Nokia being used was a prototype device. However, we have seen similar comparisons made against the Samsung Galaxy S III, and the performance shined there as well.
The next month or so of waiting is going to be a serious test of our patience, especially if we are afforded the opportunity to observe this continuous flow of tid-bits of what is to come.

That's your choice, as it is your money, but there's no rationale in it for me. Iphones look like the electronic learning devices I'd buy for my nephews at the toy store, with the tiny screen and ridiculously large bezels. The home button seems so cheesy as well nowadays. Most of the third-party "concept" iphones had a modified home button and reduced bezels; guess Ive doesn't know how to evolve his [plagarized from Braun] designs. The aluminum back plate was already something other manufactures have moved away from (notably Nokia with the N8 and E7, and HTC who, like Nokia, have gone to polycarbonate).

I'm getting the 820/920 (whatever fits in my budget), and a BB10/Jolla whenever they come out. BB10 because it does look promising and Jolla as I love MeeGo.
19. pikapowerize (banned) posted on 26 Sep 2012, 00:37 8 1
SUPER AGREE WITH YOU!!!!
BB10 and jolla are really promising!!!
BB10 coz it will be the baby of all platform-- WP, iOS,Android and Meego
jolla- coz they stand up and fight for meego!!
but ashamed about tizen though.. have you heard that it is already at version 2.0? aka Magnolia? i guess no one wants to talk about that even samsung themselves!

My personal experience with Samsung smartphones: Galaxy S / S advance/ S2/ Wave525/ Wave (the first one running bada) and feature phones(Champ and another one I don't exactly remember which one) hasn't been good. So I don't think I'll buy Samsung again. I'll buy a Nexus device when I have to buy an Android. No Tizen for me.

i like the iPhone (all apple devices) but lumia 920 (coz im a nokia fan from the start) will give more than what iPhone can give!
in terms of productivity.. but in terms of apps.. it will just come around! now that WP8/win8RT/win8 shares same kernel! MS devs can now make apps to all these platform!

Ahhh... Do you hear that?
It's the sound of millions of iFans asking siri what the strong discomfort is in their rears, and siri telling them they should consult their proctologist for their butthurt complaint.
Iphones got OWMED!

Is that really the iPhone 5?!? Forget about image stabilization, the images looks so washed out!
6. pikapowerize (banned) posted on 26 Sep 2012, 00:16 5 3
really annoyed by these comparison!!! we already know that nokia pureview (and phase 2) is the best camera tech in cell phone world!!!
but on the other hand its a great advertisement for lumia 920 with its superpower camera!
it just put a shame to samsung, a phone manufacturer also a digital camera maker...
and to apple with all its "innovation"
gonna get a lumia 920 when it arrive!
9. No_Nonsense posted on 26 Sep 2012, 00:24 5 0
If you can get away with OIS and low light shots without flash, the 808 is the best camera on a phone. Period.
14. -box- posted on 26 Sep 2012, 00:29 1 0
Looking forward to Phase 3; I'm anticipating a mix of stages 1 & 2, with some new surprise goodie. Won't keep me from getting the 920, but at least the 920, like the N8 before it, will hold its value if I were to sell it and buy the newest iteration of the breed.
18. pikapowerize (banned) posted on 26 Sep 2012, 00:34 3 1
i just wish for the monstrous 41mp on the next lumia next year...
but 920 is amazing!!
22. No_Nonsense posted on 26 Sep 2012, 00:51 0 0
Phase 3 is NOT a mix of phase 1 and 2 if Elop's interview to Engadget is to be believed.
23. -box- posted on 26 Sep 2012, 00:59 1 0
Didn't have a chance to watch it yet. I expect an evolution of the breed and consistent innovation, so I'll continue to keep an eye out for the next thing they're working on (though I do that already).

it will always be the best...the king of camera phone!! it is one of a kind.. and i think it will be the greatest symbian ever and the best symbian ever!
the first symbian running 1.3Ghz..running the latest and greatest symbian update ever the belle fp1 and soon the fp2!
has put the expensive digicam to dust and tied with some DSLRs!!!
the first with 41mp loose-less zooming on a phone..
but i really dont know why a LED flash defeat xenon flash!!
oh well its nokia's trick!!! im just amaze!!
24. -box- posted on 26 Sep 2012, 01:03 2 0
The Nokia Conversations blog explained the LED vs Xenon thing. As I recall, they could get the LEDs to fire faster and with greater timing and level accuracy. The Xenon flashes in the N8 and 808 are great, and I'll give Nokia the benefit of the doubt on such an important device.

so u buy a phone just 4 the camera?? yeah take the bluetooth
3.1 from nokia lol the other handsets have already 4.0
everyone talks only about the camera i mean come on realy??
thats a phone the other things must be right too.. hmm cant understand some people.. sure the nokia 920 is a good phone.. but we will se in
41. -box- posted on 26 Sep 2012, 07:44 1 1
Name one everyday item general consumers use that needs 4.0+. My parents-in-law just bought a new car with full Bluetooth sync, and it only requires 2.0 and up. My coworker's new Jawbone headset only requires 1.1. I haven't encountered any object that requires the higher Bluetooth (yet).
Not only that, Nokia is focusing on NFC, which doesn't require pairing and codes, just an acknowledgement and authorization on the phone screen. One button, less than one second. Watch the recent Galaxy S3 ad for real-world usage of the tech.
46. doejon posted on 26 Sep 2012, 08:22 0 0
lol cuz a company must give the best for it consumers, thats way u know ... putting old tech
and let other things outstand is wrong
u never know perhaps u can tomorrow need it or use it.. and all other have it except nokias flagshipp.. come on..are u kidding me? u just started act like isheeps - first yeaaahh the iphone will get nfc - than ooo man who realy needs nfc.. lol (nfc taggs, nfc payment, nfc data transfers etc)
but as i said we will see the final tests and im pretty sure hat the nokia 920 will only beat the other phones when it comes to camera..
sorry 4 my bad english

Photographer sometimes do location survey and pre-shot photo using cameraphone, and be able to take a usable quick shot, Lumia 920 will serve it purpose. Hopefully, the final release will be as good or even better than this demo unit!

moste complete phone is the note 2. the nokia 920 has a better camera
and other things??? LOL i have a canon 3d mark 2 and if i want to make photos or videos i just use my dslr.. let be the camera the only reason to make the decision is silly if u aske me...the nokia phone is good 4 sure
but its not even close to the exelent note 2 just read the review of note 2 at phonearena.. ;-)
have a nice day and sorry 4 my bad english
49. REYNER posted on 28 Sep 2012, 08:39 0 0
uhm yah.. i know when it comes to future proofing i guess Note II would be light yrs ahead but i guess as of this very moment quad cores is not really a necessity. i also read about the NOte 2 review. it looks good thats why im considering it as a next phone but WP isnt that bad after all with its wireless charging and nfc enabled headphones.. so we cant jump into a "lame" conclusions without even trying it first or seeing its reviews. Good thing you have a dslr.. but im sorry im not a fan of dslr i find it not so handy. but for us who will be able to get a digicam like result in camera "within" the phone is a much big help in party or in an unexpected night out its a blast!
have a nice day too.. well my english is not that good either its ok they are nice here..

optical image stabilization rulezz... btw very nice contrast, saturation and exposure metering from lumia 920, I'm just curious why the video from iphone5 is so "low contrast and low saturation" and you can clearly see compression artifacts from iphone5. but I guess they just used different PP for both vids.
42. -box- posted on 26 Sep 2012, 07:47 1 0
Supposedly in video mode with "Digital Image Stabilization" on, the iphone5 hobbles itself down to just 4MP, so the outside are where the camera shake is most apparent are cropped out. While I'm sure that will lead to less-wobbly YouTube videos, in practice it looks like junk and the video quality is about par with current feature phones, not smartphones. IPhail!

Finally the real Lumia 920 video sample. Also, dear Nokia, never ever again fake any samples.
43. -box- posted on 26 Sep 2012, 07:49 1 0
What do you mean "finally"? There's been samples floating around the web (YouTube most notably) for a few days/weeks now.

They never officially release one that can be seen on the monitor.
